Where the entry-level jobs actually are

• The plants, indirectly. Nobody walks into ExxonMobil with no experience — but the contractors do hire laborers, hole watch, fire watch and helpers for turnarounds with a safety-council card and a clean drug test, and that's the door. ISTC on Decker Drive for the card (Monday to Friday, 6:30 to 4:30); the contractors' postings on the work page. Twelve-hour days, six weeks, and the next one. A lot of forty-year careers in this town started as hole watch.
• Retail and the big boxes. H-E-B, Walmart, Buc-ee's (which advertises pay above the retail norm), the Garth Road chains. Hiring pages linked on the jobs page with the current counts.
• The hotels. Eighteen of them, and every one turns over housekeeping, front desk and breakfast staff, especially before a turnaround. Walk in with a résumé; the managers hire on the spot in the weeks before a big one.
• Restaurants and the trucks. Cash, tips, no résumé, a conversation. The Tex-Mex places and the chains both; the trucks at the plant gates need a second person at 5 a.m.
• The city and the districts. Parks & Rec seasonal jobs — the water park, the pools, the summer camps — for anyone sixteen and up; custodial, cafeteria, bus-driver and aide positions at Goose Creek and Barbers Hill with training provided and a background check. • Warehouse and distribution along I-10 and 146 — forklift certification is a two-day course and changes the pay.
• Healthcare, the entry side. Patient transport, dietary, environmental services at the hospital; the CNA course at Lee College is weeks, not years, and leads somewhere.
• The RV parks and laundromats — seasonal, the crews' economy, hiring when the parks fill.

The path out of entry-level

Lee College is the whole answer: a process-technology, welding or instrumentation credential in two years, often while working, and the plants hire from it. Dual credit means a high-schooler can start at sixteen. The workforce board's programs pay for some of it; the work page has the link. The union apprenticeships in Deer Park, La Marque and Texas City are the other road, and they pay while you learn.

What to bring

A Texas ID, a Social Security card, a phone that takes calls, and for anything near the plants, a willingness to pass a drug test and take a safety class. A résumé helps at the hotels and the hospital; it doesn't matter at the trucks. Steel-toe boots for the plants; the FR stores on Garth and Bayway have them.
