HERE Baytown
Baytown is a Gulf Coast city of about 86,561 on the Houston Ship Channel — three older towns (Baytown, Pelly, Goose Creek) fused in 1948, a working waterfront, the fifth-largest refinery in the United States by EIA capacity, and a 500-acre bird peninsula that most people on I-10 never see. HERE is the daily index: what to eat, what’s on, where the water is, how to spend a weekend without asking a Facebook group.

Population 86,561. Merged from three towns in 1948. ExxonMobil's Baytown refinery — fifth-largest in the U.S. by EIA capacity on one side of the channel; 317 bird species on a 500-acre peninsula on the other. That tension is the city. The guide is built to hold both.
Listings start from open map data, public calendars, and on-the-ground checks. Some hours and contact fields are filled from Google Places when a business has no first-party page we can read — those listings say so. We do not scrape Yelp reviews. Taste is the moat. Sponsorships, when they exist, are marked. When a room closes or a drag strip is demolished, we keep the page and say so — deleting it would just send you to a ghost listing on someone else’s map.
Claim a listing if we have you wrong. This weekend is the habit.
Some photos are illustrations until we shoot the real thing.
How it's made
Software finds the six thousand doors, drafts the first version, and checks it against the sources. People decide what stays. Listings are seeded from open map data (Overture, Foursquare's open data and OpenStreetMap) and then checked against official sites. A place that has closed shows as closed for a while, then comes off the list.
We tell you this because a town that makes things the rest of the country uses deserves a guide that shows its own work. What you're holding is the town, gathered carefully and offered with affection. A list only becomes a town when someone who loves the place reads it back and asks whether it's true.
The test for every line is the same whether a machine or a neighbor wrote it first: is it true of Baytown, is it useful at the moment you need it, and does it read like it was written to you and not about you? That's the human part, and it's the part that decides.
HERE Baytown is written and published independently. It is not affiliated with the City of Baytown; the city's own site is baytown.org.

What these labels mean
Every place card and place page carries one label. It says how we know what the listing says.
- Editorial pick
- We wrote about it: it is in one of our guides or on the Short List.
- Verified
- A first-party source confirmed it in the last 180 days: the owner, the place's own website or social page, or a city, county or state record at its address (a permit, license or inspection).
- Open data
- It comes from open datasets (such as OpenStreetMap) and our regular data refreshes, without a first-party confirmation in the last 180 days.
- Needs review
- Something needs checking: two sources disagree, a correction is pending, or we have neither hours nor a website for it.
A closed place stays in the guide, marked "Closed — retained". Cards also say whether a place is in Baytown or near it, and how far from the city limits.
