Sources and attribution

Everything on this site comes from somewhere, and this page says where. Several of the licenses below require attribution by name, so naming only the aggregator would not be enough.

Datasets at a glance

Each source below is named with what we use it for, its license, a link, and how often we refresh it. Where we have no license on record for a source, the table says to see the source's terms and links to it. We do not guess a license. "Nightly" means a step in our nightly job refreshes it; "when we re-pull" means we fetch it again by hand.

Business and place listings

6,299 listings, built fromOverture Maps. Overture aggregates several upstream datasets; these are the ones that actually contributed to listings here, with the number of listings each touched.

Foursquare's Open Source Places data is distributed under Apache-2.0, which requires its NOTICE to be preserved. Foursquare is credited here as a contributing dataset; its full notice travels with the Overture distribution.

Events

940 listings, read from published iCalendar feeds belonging to the organizations that run the events — the City of Baytown (including Sterling Municipal Library), the City of Mont Belvieu, Chambers County Commissioners Court, and Baytown United Seventh-day Adventist Church. Each event links back to the organizer's own page.

We do not scrape social media, and we do not copy event descriptions in full. An entry records a title, a time, a venue and a link to the source.

Parks and facilities

54 facilities with addresses, hours and amenity lists, read from the City of Baytown's public facilities directory. Each park links to its official city page.

City services and statistics

  • Trash, recycling, brush, water rates and emergency guidance: the City of Baytown's own pages. Each page links the source it was read from.
  • Population, demographics, housing, income and education: U.S. Census BureauQuickFacts for Baytown city, Texas(FIPS 4806128). Every figure is shown with the period it describes.
  • Maps and boundaries: U.S. Census Bureau TIGER/Line, Baytown place GEOID 4806128.

The one thing we cannot check

Every outbound link on this site is validated, and a link that returns "not found" is withheld with a note saying so — except social links. Facebook'srobots.txt tells crawlers like ours to stay out, and we honor that, so we have no polite way to find out whether a page is still there.

That means the Facebook and Instagram links on listing pages are passed through unverified. They come from the open map data, they are almost all numeric page ids rather than names, and some will have gone. We show them anyway, because for a small business with no website it is often the only place opening hours and closures get posted — but you should know they have not been checked the way the rest of the site has.

Photographs and illustrations

Every image on the site is accounted for here, and each one carries the same note under it on the page where it appears.

Licensed photographs

From Wikimedia Commons under Creative Commons licenses. Author and license are named under the photo and again here, and both link to the source.

Illustrations

8213 images in the HERE set are generated illustrations, not photographs of the places they sit beside, and every listing without a photo of its own carries a generated or licensed picture for its category (see the list of pictures by setfor each file, the pages that use it, who made it and its license). Some photos are illustrations until we shoot the real thing; the origin of every file is recorded in the photo manifest.

What we deliberately do not use

  • No star ratings or reviews copied from other platforms.
  • No photographs we cannot account for. Every image is listed above with its origin, its license, or an honest statement that we do not know.
  • No social media scraping. We never read, copy or republish anything posted on a social network. Where a listing shows a Facebook or Instagram link, that URL came to us in the open map data with the rest of the record; we pass it on and nothing more.
  • No email addresses. Our source data contains thousands of business email addresses, many of them personal accounts belonging to sole traders. We hold them for verification and never publish them.
  • No rankings. We list what exists. We have no sourced basis for calling one business better than another.

If you own a listing and something here is wrong — or you want it removed —tell us and we will fix it. Our crawler identifies itself and obeys robots.txt; see about our crawler.

Ours to fix
