Medical assistant jobs in Baytown are at the hospital, the clinics and the urgent cares along Garth Road and West Baker Road, and the Houston-area median wage for a medical assistant is $20.25 an hour, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Houston Methodist Baytown posts openings on its careers page, and the urgent cares and group practices post on their own sites. X-ray technician jobs are fewer and sit in a handful of places: the hospital's imaging department, its outpatient center, an urgent care that runs an X-ray room, and Edloe Imaging Center Baytown. The Bureau of Labor Statistics does publish a wage for radiologic technologists, but the Houston figure was not available to us to print here, so check the BLS Houston table. This page gives you where the work is, what the license looks like and what to ask.

Where medical assistants work

  • Houston Methodist Baytown, at 4401 Garth Road, is the hospital, and Houston Methodist Primary Care Group and the Houston Methodist Baytown Outpatient Center, at 1677 W. Baker Road, are its clinic side.
  • Kelsey-Seybold Clinic - Baytown, at 6300 Garth Road, is a group practice on the Garth corridor, so check its own careers page.
  • Harris Health Baytown Health Center, at 1602 Garth Road, is the county's safety-net clinic, open weekdays 7 to 5, with primary care, pediatrics, radiology, a pharmacy and a lab under one roof.
  • UrgentcareMDs, at 1658 W. Baker Road, is a walk-in center that lists weekday hours of 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and weekends 9 to 7, which suits someone who needs evening or weekend shifts. The urgent care guide lists the rest.

What it pays and what it takes

The Houston metro had about 18,280 medical assistants in the latest BLS figures, with a median of $20.25 an hour, or about $42,110 a year. Nursing assistants earn a median of $18.26 and licensed vocational nurses $30.61, so the steps above a medical assistant are paid accordingly. For training, Lee College lists certificates in phlebotomy and clinical medical assisting, and its nursing program is the next rung. The Lee College Workforce Center, at 909 Decker Drive, runs the non-credit courses, and Workforce Solutions-Baytown, at 4308 Garth Road, can tell you what funding you qualify for.

Texas does not license medical assistants, so the credential is the employer's call. Many employers prefer a national certification such as the CMA from the American Association of Medical Assistants or the RMA from American Medical Technologists. Others hire on a certificate from a program like Lee's and train on the job. Ask every employer which credential it wants before you pay for a course, because the requirement differs between a hospital, an urgent care and a doctor's office.

Where X-ray technicians work

  • Houston Methodist Baytown Imaging, on Level 1 at 4401 Garth Road, is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and emergency films go through the hospital's emergency department.
  • Houston Methodist Baytown Outpatient Center, at 1677 W. Baker Road, is the outpatient imaging side and shares a building with the breast care center.
  • Edloe Imaging Center Baytown, at 3711 Garth Road, Suite C, and also listed as Global Health Imaging, LLC, lists MRI, CT, digital X-ray and ultrasound, weekdays 8 to 6 and Saturday 9 to 2.
  • UrgentcareMDs lists an onsite X-ray, and other urgent cares on Garth and Baker vary by day, so ask whether the room is staffed.
  • Baytown Open MRI, at 4310 Garth Road, does MRI only, no X-ray and no CT, so it is a different modality and a different job.
  • Harris Health Baytown Health Center lists radiology and mammography among its services.

The imaging guide describes each of these from the patient's side, and it is the fastest way to see which rooms exist.

The license for X-ray work

Taking X-rays on people in Texas takes a state certificate, issued through the Texas Medical Board for medical radiologic technologists. The usual route is an accredited radiography program, then the national ARRT registry exam, then the state certificate. Rules and fees change, so confirm the current steps on the Texas Medical Board and ARRT sites before you enroll anywhere. A few limited roles, such as a limited-scope X-ray tech in a clinic, have a shorter path, and employers say so in the posting. Lee College's published catalog does not list a radiography program that we could confirm, so ask Lee's advisers and the Houston-area community colleges where the nearest accredited program is.

How to read a posting

Titles vary, so a posting for an X-ray technician may describe anything from taking films in a clinic to a hospital imaging role that includes other studies. Postings do not always say, so ask two questions: which studies will I perform, and which credential and license does the employer require before day one. The Houston Methodist careers page filters by the Baytown hospital, and the smaller centers usually post on their own sites or through a staffing agency.

What the hours look like

Clinic work clusters on weekdays: Harris Health Baytown Health Center is open 7 to 5 Monday through Friday, Baytown Open MRI 8 to 4 on weekdays by its own site, and the hospital's outpatient imaging 8 to 5. The urgent cares are where evening and weekend shifts live, and the hospital itself never closes, so the emergency side is where nights are. If you need a fixed daytime schedule, the clinics are the fit.

Coming from another job

If you are already in healthcare, the nearest step sideways is from nursing assistant to medical assistant, and the nearest step up is to LVN. The no-degree jobs page lists the nurse aide, phlebotomy and medical assisting paths with the employers, and Lee College for families covers enrollment. The young adults jobs page puts these paths next to the plant and district jobs.

Before you go

  • Check the hospital's careers page and the smaller employers' own pages, since the counts change weekly.
  • Ask each employer which credential and license it requires before you enroll in a course.
  • Ask whether the job is weekdays only or includes evenings and weekends, since urgent cares run longer hours.
  • Ask whether the employer helps with tuition for the next step up.
  • Bring your certificates and your work history to the interview.
