Questions people ask

Can I foster a dog or cat in Baytown? The six kinds of foster homes and how to start

The six kinds of fostering

  • Short-term fostering. If you only have a few days or even a few hours, you can still help. The city calls it a small commitment that makes a big impact.
  • Long-term fostering. You give a dog or cat a home for a longer stretch, so the animal can relax and come out of its shell before it is adopted.
  • Bottle baby fostering. You care for the youngest, most fragile animals in the shelter: orphaned kittens and puppies that need to be bottle fed.
  • Mom and baby fostering. You take in a mother cat, or a mother dog, with her litter. The mother does most of the work while you watch the babies grow.
  • Behavioral fostering. You work with pets that need help learning to trust, to be around people and animals, or to learn basic manners so they are ready to be adopted.
  • Medical fostering. You give a pet a quiet, safe place to heal from an illness or an injury.

How to start

You do not need to decide on a kind first. The easiest first step is Foster Fridays, a weekly information session. You learn what you need to know about fostering dogs, cats and bottle babies, and you can ask questions before you commit. The city's Fostering page has a sign-up link for the session. If you would rather start by writing, the same page has an email link to the foster team.

What to think about before you say yes

The city's page does not list supplies, vet rules or how long a foster stays, so ask the foster team those questions at Foster Fridays. It helps to think about three things on your own. How much time do you have each day? Do you have other pets at home, or small children? And can you stay calm when an animal is shy, noisy or sick? Short-term fostering is built for people who are not sure.

Other ways to help

If you cannot foster, the city lists a Donations and Wish Lists page for items the shelter can use. The guide to volunteering in Baytown lists other ways to give time. If you want to adopt rather than foster, Baytown Animal Services is the first stop for animals found in the city, and the City of Mont Belvieu runs its own shelter and posts its own adoption rules; both are explained on the shelter page.

Before you go

  • Pick the kind of fostering that fits the time you have.
  • Go to a Foster Fridays session before you decide.
  • Ask what supplies and medical care the city provides.
  • Make sure everyone in your home agrees.
  • Keep your own pets' vaccines current, and ask the foster team what that means.

  • Hogar temporal a corto plazo.
  • Hogar temporal a largo plazo.
