Questions people ask

Where is the animal shelter in Baytown, and how do I adopt, foster or find a lost pet?

The city's microchip registry, 24Petwatch, says it will not give your personal information to a Good Samaritan without your consent, as Texas House Bill 2828 requires. It does release pet and owner information to animal welfare professionals who are trying to reunite a lost pet with its owner. The pet rules page lists the other city rules for dogs and cats.

Turning in a found or unwanted animal

Baytown Animal Services can only admit animals found or kept inside Baytown city limits. To bring one in, you request an admission appointment on the city's Animal Admission page, and the city says proof of residency will be required to book it. The city also asks you to try the resources listed on that page before you book an appointment.

If you live outside Baytown

The shelter only serves the city, so a stray in a county area goes to a different office. For help outside Baytown, the city's page sends you to Chambers County Animal Control and Harris County Animal Control and lists their phone numbers. Mont Belvieu runs its own shelter, the Mont Belvieu Animal Shelter at 3831 Perry Avenue, for animals in that city.

Microchips are required in the city

If you live in the city of Baytown, a microchip is required for each pet, and owners can be fined if their pets do not have one. The chip is a rice-sized radio-frequency tag put under the skin, and it is not a GPS: it only carries an ID number that is tied to your contact information in a registry. Trained staff at Baytown Animal Services will microchip your pet during open hours, and most vets can do it during a routine visit. The shelter chips every dog and cat before adoption and registers the chip for you. If you got your pet somewhere else, check whether it has a chip and whether the chip is registered in your name. You can search for a chip on the American Animal Hospital Association's microchip lookup, and register it with the city's registry. Update your phone number, email and address whenever they change, and check them once a year.

If your pet is lost

The city's advice is to report your pet as missing with your microchip registry: log in to your microchip account and mark the pet as lost. If the pet is found, the registry contacts you by automated call, email and text. The city also suggests posting the pet on Petco Love Lost and on groups such as Nextdoor, Facebook or PawBoost. You can also contact the shelter during its open hours.

Fostering

Baytown Animal Services runs a foster program with several kinds of foster homes: short-term, long-term, bottle baby (orphaned kittens and puppies), mom and baby, behavioral and medical. To learn more, join Foster Fridays, a weekly information session, or email the foster team through the city's Fostering page. Other ways to help are on the city's Donations and Wish Lists page, and the guide to volunteering in Baytown lists more.

Adopting from Baytown Animal Services

The city lists the animals that are available for adoption online, on the city's adoption listing at 24PetConnect, and says the list is updated every 15 minutes. It is no guarantee that a pet will still be there when you arrive, because adoptions are first come, first served. To adopt, come to the shelter at 705 N. Robert C. Lanier Drive during its normal hours, Monday through Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. Every dog and cat is microchipped before it goes home, as described above.

Looking for the humane society?

People often search for a "Baytown humane society". The City of Baytown's pages do not use that name. The city-run shelter is Baytown Animal Services, and it is the office the city points to for adoption, found pets and foster homes. To help the animals there, the city's pages list a wish list for donations, the foster program above and a volunteer portal for people of all abilities.

Stray and community cats

The city's Community Cat Program is for unowned, free-roaming outdoor cats, not for pet cats. It uses trap, neuter and return: the cats are humanely trapped, sterilized, vaccinated and returned to the place where they were trapped. At no charge, the program covers spay or neuter surgery, rabies and FVRCP vaccines, and ear-tipping so fixed community cats are easy to spot. You start by filling out the city's Stray Cat Survey. The city says there is a substantial wait list and that a team member will contact you when an appointment opens.

Adopting from Mont Belvieu

The City of Mont Belvieu posts its adoption rules. An adopter must be 18 or older and show a current government photo ID. Within 7 days the adopter must show a rabies vaccination for the animal if it is over 4 months old and not already vaccinated, and within 30 days proof that the animal was spayed or neutered. Adoption fees vary from $10 to $50, and adopters 65 and older can adopt any pet 7 or older for free under the Seniors for Seniors program. An adopted animal can be returned within 7 days, and the fee is not refunded.
