Substitutes can start with a high school diploma or GED for aide days, or with 45 college hours (or an associate or bachelor's degree) for classroom days, and the district runs its own orientation. Outside the district, the best fits are morning shifts in retail and restaurants and the part-time roster at the city and the library.
Inside the school district
Goose Creek CISD is one of the largest employers in town, and its jobs run on the same bell schedule as your children's. Every opening, including the substitute application, goes through the district's careers page and its online job board, and applications are handled by the district's Human Resources office.
Substitute teaching. The district's requirements are a high school diploma or GED for aide assignments, and a bachelor's degree with a Texas teaching certificate, a bachelor's degree, 45 college credit hours or an associate degree for classroom teacher, librarian and nurse assignments. New substitutes attend a district orientation and bring an original Social Security card, a photo ID, a copy of their diploma or GED and a voided check or direct deposit form. You choose the days you work, which is why parents like it. The Houston-area median for substitute teachers is $15.65 an hour.
Classroom aides. Teaching assistants and instructional aides work the school day and the school year. The Houston-area median is $29,300 a year, paid over the school calendar, and the job comes with the district's benefits. The district's 2026-27 hourly scale for clerical and paraprofessional jobs starts at $13.50 an hour at its lowest grade, so ask which grade the job sits in.
School bus driver. Bus routes run a morning block and an afternoon block, with the middle of the day often free. The district requires a Class B commercial driver license and certification through the Texas Department of Public Safety, TEA and the district's own school bus driver courses. The Goose Creek CISD Transportation Facility is at 2102 East Archer Road. The district's transportation page does not print a pay rate, so ask Human Resources before you commit.
Campus support. Cafeteria, custodial and front-office jobs also run on the school calendar. The district's manual-trades scale for 2026-27 starts at $13.00 an hour, and the grade depends on the job.
What the school calendar means for the paycheck
A job that follows the school year also stops when the school year stops. Substitutes are paid for the days they work, so a week of testing or a holiday break is a week without pay, and summer is three months without it. Aides and bus drivers are district employees on the school calendar, so ask Human Resources at hiring how the pay is spread across the year and whether summer work exists, such as summer school routes or programs. Plan the summer before it arrives: the city's seasonal roster, the water parks and the summer camps hire for exactly the months the school jobs go quiet.
The trade is worth it for many parents, and it is worth doing the arithmetic before the first school year rather than after it. The hours match the bus, the days off match your children's days off, and nobody asks you to explain a spring break. The district is also a large enough employer that a substitute who becomes a familiar face often hears about permanent openings first.
Outside the district
Morning retail and restaurant shifts. Grocery stores, coffee shops and breakfast kitchens along Garth Road often need opening crews, and those shifts can end by early afternoon. Ask for a shift that ends before pickup, and get the schedule in writing before the first week.
City and library part-time work. Baytown Parks & Recreation hires seasonal staff each spring, and Sterling Municipal Library posts part-time openings. Both run on the city's posted schedules, so ask about hours before you apply.
Two part-time jobs instead of one. Some parents build a school-hours week out of two pieces, such as substitute days plus a weekend shift, or a morning opening shift plus a few hours of evening work when a partner is home. Two employers means two schedules to protect, so put both in writing, and tell each employer which hours are already taken. A schedule that is clear on day one is much easier to keep than one renegotiated every week, and most local managers would rather hire someone with fixed hours than someone who cancels shifts in May.
Help with the search. Workforce Solutions-Baytown, at 4308 Garth Road, helps for free with applications and resumes, and it can sometimes pay for child care while a parent trains or works. Ask about it on the first visit.
The part-time jobs page covers more flexible work, the child care guide covers the hours school doesn't, and the school-life page has the district calendar basics.
Before you go
- Gather your Social Security card, photo ID and diploma or transcript before you apply to substitute, because orientation asks for originals.
- Count your college hours, since 45 of them move you from aide days to classroom days.
- Ask any non-district employer for a written shift that ends before school pickup.
- Ask Workforce Solutions whether you qualify for child care help while you work or train.
- Look at the district calendar for teacher workdays and holidays, because substitute work stops when school does.
