Questions people ask
Can I get a free smoke detector in Baytown? Plus Knox boxes and how to give the fire department feedback
You qualify if you live inside the Baytown city limits, or inside the fire department's first-response area, you own a single-family house, and you do not have a working smoke detector. Rental property is not covered. You fill out the smoke detector application on the city's page and submit it. A fire department representative then contacts you to set an appointment, and an engine company comes to your house and installs a working detector. It costs nothing.
The free smoke detector program
The Baytown Fire Department runs the program with Enbridge. The goal is a working smoke detector in every house in the Baytown area.

Older residents get a second option. A senior who has a problem with a detector can contact the fire department to have it checked or the battery replaced. The department's contact details are on the city page, so this page does not repeat a number.
If you rent, the city program is not for you, so ask your landlord about the smoke detectors in your home. For a fire or smoke in the house right now, call 911.
Knox boxes for businesses
A Knox box is a small locked key box fixed outside a building so firefighters can get in fast without breaking a door. The city says the International Fire Code, 2015 edition, lets Baytown require one where access is restricted by secured openings or where quick entry is needed to save lives or fight a fire. The same rule covers locks on gates.
In Baytown the city says Knox key equipment is required on all commercial establishments and on gated developments, communities and facilities. The box goes on the outside of the building near the main entrance, no higher than 6 feet above the ground. The city uses equipment sold by the Knox Company, and you must say the order is for the Baytown Fire Department so you get the right keyway. The box must be installed with the right keys inside before the city issues a Certificate of Occupancy. Questions go to the Fire Marshal's office; the city's page lists the contacts.
Compliments and complaints
The fire department asks for feedback. To send a compliment, you can call or visit the Fire Department Administration Building during regular business hours and ask for a supervisor, or fill out the online customer satisfaction form. The Fire Chief reviews all comments. If you are praising an employee, your comments go in that person's file and the original goes to the employee.
To file a complaint about the department or an employee, you can ask for a supervisor in person or by phone during business hours, or fill out the online complaint form. The department says all complaints are investigated thoroughly.
Before you go
- Check that the house is a single-family home you own and that you live in the city or the first-response area.
- Apply on the city's smoke detector page and wait for the call to book a time.
- Businesses should plan the Knox box before the final inspection, not after.
- For fire safety in the plants, see who watches the plant.
Businesses also deal with the Fire Marshal's Office for inspections, food truck and event permits. See Fire Marshal inspections and permits.

No cuesta nada.
