Questions people ask
Most teenagers in Baytown get their first job at a store counter, a grocery, a restaurant or a water park, and the age that decides it is 16. Fourteen- and fifteen-year-olds can work in Texas, but the hour limits are tight and the kitchen, baking and warehouse jobs are off the list, so the register, the bagging line and the front counter are the realistic fits.
At 16 the city's seasonal roster opens up, with lifeguards, camp counselors and park crew, and most of the hour limits end. The Houston-area median wage for a cashier is $14.11 an hour, for a fast-food or counter worker $13.25, and for a lifeguard $13.24, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Texas does not issue school work permits, but the Texas Workforce Commission's child-labor rules apply, along with the federal ones. For 14- and 15-year-olds, the federal limits during the school year are 3 hours on a school day and 18 in a school week, only between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., and 9 p.m. from June 1 to Labor Day. In summer the limit is 8 hours a day and 40 a week. The state's own cap for that age is 8 hours a day and 48 a week, no work before 5 a.m., and none after 10 p.m. on a night before a school day. The federal rule is the tighter one in the school year. From 16 on, most of these limits end. Cooking, baking and warehouse work are on the prohibited list for 14- and 15-year-olds, along with loading trucks and running power machinery. The employer sets its own minimum age on top of the law, so the posting is what counts.
The Houston-area medians from the Bureau of Labor Statistics are $15.00 an hour for recreation workers, $17.74 for stockers and order fillers, $14.04 for library assistants and $10.61 for waiters and waitresses before tips. These are medians for everyone in the job, so a first job can start under them. Tips are not counted in the waiter figure, and the register jobs pay close to the $14 cashier median.
Sterling Municipal Library, at 1 Mary Wilbanks Avenue, takes teen volunteers and lists teen programs on its calendar, and it is where to ask about page and desk openings, which run evenings and Saturdays. Volunteering there gives you a reference and a first line on a résumé. The library is open until 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, closed Sunday. The Sterling Library guide has the rest.
The Fred Aguilar Promise Center, at 1724 Market Street, is a community center and youth organization with no posted jobs page. Ask at the desk about junior staff or volunteer hours, since the answer is more likely a volunteer slot than a payroll one.
Some people who type this search mean a job that fits around children, not a job for a child. School-hour jobs at the districts (aides, cafeteria, bus monitors) follow the school calendar, and Goose Creek CISD posts openings year-round on its own portal. Plant-schedule households can fit part-time work around a four-day rotation. The part-time jobs page lists both, and the child care guide covers who watches the kids while you work.
Bring a photo ID, your Social Security card and a phone that takes calls. Workforce Solutions-Baytown, at 4308 Garth Road, is the local workforce office, open weekdays 8 to 5, and is the place to ask whether it runs a youth program. For anything working with kids, expect a background check and ask who runs it and who pays.
