Use more than the shelves

What's actually there

The best free building in Baytown, and the one the town undersells, is at 1 Mary Wilbanks Avenue, a short walk from Town Square. About 50,500 square feet holding roughly 200,000 items, physical and digital, with circulation above 230,000 a year, which is a lot of borrowing for a town this size. A children's side that isn't an afterthought: story times, including a bilingual one, Tiempo de Cuentos, and the summer reading program that every kid in town has done and half the adults remember. The Story Bar, which Visit Baytown calls the only one of its kind in the country, puts iPads with digital magazines and book picks on the floor. The Think Tank is a room with a new experience each month, and the Media Lab has 3D printing and a podcast studio. There are public computers, free Wi-Fi, meeting rooms community groups can reserve, and a Spanish-language section that's real, not a shelf.

The building is also worth a look as a building. Out front is the Boundless Knowledge book sculpture, there is a mural called Solitary Journey, and inside is a photographic history mural by the local artist Ruth Burke.

Where the history lives

The library has put more than 32,000 items on the Portal to Texas History, most of them local newspapers (The Baytown Sun alone is over 22,000 items), along with school yearbooks and The Humble Refinery Bee. That is the collection nobody else has, and it is searchable from your couch. The library's own story starts with Ross S. Sterling, then president of Humble Oil, who donated the land and the building for a Harris County branch; the city took over funding and dedicated the Sterling Municipal Library in 1963, and bond programs in 1975 and 1995 expanded it. Sterling's name is on one of the Lynchburg Ferry boats too.

The card

Free, and open to anyone. There is no residency requirement, so you do not have to live in Baytown. Bring a government-issued photo ID that shows your date of birth; under 18, a parent or guardian signs with their own ID. The first card is free and a replacement is $1. It gets you the physical collection and the digital side too, e-books, audiobooks and research databases, from your phone. New accounts can check out up to 12 items, and after three months and 15 returned items the limit goes to 25. Cards expire every three years and renew by phone or in person. There is also a digital-only card for adults in the Baytown area. Get the card the first week you live here; it's the fastest way to feel like you do.

Hours

Monday to Thursday, 10 to 8. Friday and Saturday, 10 to 5. Closed Sunday. The building has closed in recent years after 5 on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, so check the calendar in the holidays. The lot is on Mary Wilbanks, with street parking on Defee.

The programs

Story times by age, the summer reading program, homework help, adult classes (citizenship, computers, English), author visits, 3D printing for adults, and the maker programs when they run them. All of it is on the calendar, so "what's on at the library this week" is answered on the events page without you clicking through.

Curbside pickup, interlibrary loan and late fees

Curbside pickup works like this, according to the library's page. Put items on hold in the catalog or from the New Books list. When they are ready, you get an email or text. Park in one of the spots with an orange sign on the Texas Avenue side of the building, call the number on the sign, and staff bring your items out to you. Curbside hours are Monday to Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

If the library does not own the book or article you want, it may get it from another library through interlibrary loan. Only established borrowers can use it, and your account must be in good standing. You can request up to 5 items at a time, and they take about 2 to 3 weeks to arrive. You have 5 days to pick one up, and skipping a pickup can cost you your borrowing privileges for 6 months. One renewal is allowed, late items cannot be renewed, and the late fee is $1 a day. Return these items inside during open hours, not in the outside book drop.

For newcomers

The library is where the English class meets, where the forms live when you don't know where else to look, and where a kid with no friends yet finds the first one. It's also a good room for a laptop on a slow weekday.

Why it matters here

A town of some 86,000 people with one library has to make it count, and Baytown did.

In summer, the building at 2 p.m. on a weekday is the most comfortable public room in the city, and it's full of people who know that.

Get the card the first week. Then come back on a Saturday at ten and sit in the lobby for an hour. You'll have met the town.

- FEES: a text when fines or fees of $5 or more are added to your account. - HOLDS: a text when an item you placed on hold is ready for pickup. - OVERDUE: a text when an item is overdue. - RENEW: a text when items are due for renewal or return in 2 days, repeated the day before they are due.

Si la biblioteca no tiene el libro o el artículo que usted busca, puede conseguirlo de otra biblioteca mediante el préstamo entre bibliotecas (interlibrary loan). Solo pueden usarlo los usuarios establecidos, y su cuenta debe estar en regla. Puede pedir hasta 5 artículos a la vez, y tardan de 2 a 3 semanas en llegar. Tiene 5 días para recogerlo, y no recogerlo puede costarle sus privilegios de préstamo durante 6 meses. Se permite una renovación, los artículos atrasados no se pueden renovar, y la multa por atraso es de $1 al día. Devuelva estos artículos adentro, en horario de atención, no en el buzón de afuera.
