The ACE District, block by block

The ACE District works best as a short walk with a few deliberate stops, not as a district you conquer block by block. Start on Texas Avenue, eat there, use Town Square as the center, then drive North Main if the night is continuing. Go after work, not at two on a quiet weekday, and expect festival nights to change parking and traffic. Don't mistake a few active blocks for a finished downtown. Leave enough time to see the murals on foot, and if the avenue feels quiet, come back on an event night before you judge it.

ACE stands for Arts, Culture and Entertainment, which is what the city decided downtown would be back when it was mostly empty storefronts. It worked better than anyone expected. Texas Avenue is three blocks now that feel like a town, and this is what's on them. One thing to know before you start: Texas Avenue's addresses run out from Main Street, so 2 East is the theater and 213 West is Town Square, and everything below is in that order. Check theater, museum and gallery hours before you plan around them, and treat North Main as a short drive from the walkable core.

Texas Avenue, the Main Street end

Where the avenue starts to feel like itself. The Baytown Little Theater at 2 East Texas has been putting on a season since 1961, all volunteer, and its box office is staffed only on performance days: Friday and Saturday evenings from 5 to 8, matinees from 1 to 2:30. Single tickets run about $20, and a season pass is $105. Rooster's Barbecue Co. at 6 West Texas reopened in May 2025 under new owners, and the burger is still the first order if you have never been. The listed hours disagree (daily 11 to 9 in one place, Tuesday through Saturday 11 to 8 in another), so check the day's posted hours before you plan dinner around it. The Art League of Baytown at 110 West Texas is in the old 1920s Woolworth building and runs the Art Center, with member shows and a holiday gift gallery. The gallery is usually open Thursday to Saturday around 11 to 5, so check first. Next door is Baytown Art Alley, the painted passage behind 110 to 124 West Texas with more than a dozen murals, ten minutes and the photo everyone takes, best at golden hour. The Baytown Sculpture Trail, a rotating run of outdoor pieces along the avenue, needs no ticket and twenty minutes. This is the quiet end during the day and the walking end at night.

Texas Avenue, the eating block

The 200 block West is where the meal is. Bocanegra's Kitchen at 214 West Texas Avenue, the Tex-Mex place that opened around 2022 and that the town adopted fastest, is the anchor: birria, queso tacos, Taco Tuesday, a weekday happy hour from 2 to 4, closed Sunday. Wazabi at 206 West Texas is the calm one, a sushi bar open Tuesday to Saturday from 5 to 10 with spicy tuna nachos to start and a chef who will cook off the menu if you sit at the bar. Como En México at 208 West sells ice cream from 10 to 9 daily, noon on Sunday. On a Market Saturday the line spills onto the sidewalk, and the Market at Town Square spills into this block. The rest is storefronts that turn over: a boutique, a barber shop or two, and a few doors that are still waiting for someone.

Town Square and the west end

Town Square at 213 West Texas is the civic living room: the pavilion, the lawn, the Market on the third Saturday from ten to two in spring and fall (the next two are October 17 and November 21, with evening hours in July and August), the Pre-Grito Party on the Friday night before Grito Fest, the parade route on its day, and the Holiday Hangout skating rink in December and January. The 2025 to 2026 rink ran December 5 through January 6; the city now lists this season's Hangout as December 3 through January 5, open 4 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 2 to 9 p.m. Friday through Sunday. The Market is free, dogs on a leash are welcome, and it runs rain or shine.

Grito Fest, the city's Hispanic heritage festival, is held at Bicentennial Park, 1001 Market Street. This year's was Saturday, October 3, with gates around 4:30 in the afternoon and the Pre-Grito Party at Town Square at 6 p.m. the night before, hosted by the Historic Baytown ACE Council. It's over for 2026, and the city's Grito Fest page will list the next date. Park at Lee College across the street from the park when it comes around.

A block off the avenue on West Defee, the Baytown Historical Museum is in Goose Creek's old post office, a 1936 federal building. It is free, and its hours are listed two ways (Tuesday to Saturday, 10 to 2, and Wednesday to Saturday, 10 to 4), so check before you go. The Sterling library is around the corner on Mary Wilbanks. Further west, the Visitor Information Center is at 311 West Texas, and 510 West is a speakeasy open Thursday to Saturday from 7 to 11.

North Main, the cross street

Turn north, up North Main, and it's the other half of the evening. This stretch is a short drive, not a stroll. The Dirty Daiquiri at 2007 North Main for the town's own drink, with a drive-thru and a patio. This is the block that made downtown a night out instead of a lunch. Heart and Whisk Bakery at 4618 North Main, further up, for the morning after. It is closed Monday and Tuesday. The live-music bar people think of as downtown, The Chute, is actually out on Garth at 4537, an 18-and-over venue that keeps late Thursday, Friday and Saturday hours. The bowling-and-games place, Hooky, is on the I-10 service road. Downtown's night is smaller than the internet says, and better for it.

Parking, honestly

Free and on-street most days. For Grito Fest, the July 4th event and the Christmas parade, the city's own advice is to park at Lee College, across the street from Bicentennial Park, and walk over. On a normal Market Saturday, park on or just off Texas Avenue or in the Town Square lots.

What it isn't yet

A daytime district. At two on a Tuesday the avenue is quiet; the evening economy came back before the afternoon one. Watch the empty storefronts, and watch the San Jacinto Marketplace out on East I-10, the 105-acre redevelopment of the old mall site at I-10 and Garth Road. Its first retail phase is reported to be scheduled for late 2026, with Portillo's, Bubba's 33 and Pluckers named among the tenants. It will either pull energy away from Texas Avenue or push it downtown, depending on what opens there. Three blocks that a town spent forty years ignoring and five years bringing back are three blocks that can still go either way, which is what makes them worth walking.

Walk it on a Friday at eight: Rooster's end to Town Square and back, the murals lit, dinner at Wazabi or Bocanegra's Kitchen, and a short drive up North Main for the daiquiri at the end. Wazabi is closed Sunday and Monday, and Bocanegra's Kitchen is closed Sunday. That's the ACE District as it actually is, and it's better than the acronym.

El Distrito ACE funciona mejor como un paseo corto con algunas paradas pensadas, no como un distrito que se conquista cuadra por cuadra. El Grito Fest, el festival de la herencia hispana de la ciudad, se celebra en Bicentennial Park, 1001 Market Street. El de este año fue el sábado 3 de octubre, con las puertas abriendo hacia las 4:30 de la tarde y la Pre-Grito Party en Town Square a las 6 p.m. la noche anterior, organizada por el Historic Baytown ACE Council. Heart and Whisk Bakery, en 4618 North Main, más arriba, para la mañana siguiente. Cierra lunes y martes. El bar de música en vivo que la gente cree que está en el centro, The Chute, en realidad queda en Garth, en el 4537, un local para mayores de 18 con horario hasta tarde de jueves a sábado. En un sábado de mercado normal, estacione sobre Texas Avenue o a una cuadra, o en los estacionamientos de Town Square.

Lo que todavía no es

Un distrito de día. A las dos de la tarde de un martes la avenida está tranquila; la economía de la noche volvió antes que la de la tarde. Fíjese en los locales vacíos, y en el San Jacinto Marketplace, en el este de la I-10, la reurbanización de 105 acres del antiguo centro comercial en la I-10 y Garth Road. Se informa que su primera fase comercial abriría a finales de 2026, con Portillo's, Bubba's 33 y Pluckers entre los inquilinos mencionados. Atraerá energía lejos de Texas Avenue o la empujará hacia el centro, según lo que abra allí. Tres cuadras que un pueblo ignoró durante cuarenta años y trató de recuperar durante cinco son tres cuadras que todavía pueden irse para cualquier lado, y eso es lo que las hace dignas de recorrer.

Recórralas un viernes a las ocho: del extremo de Rooster's a Town Square y de regreso, los murales iluminados, cena en Wazabi o en Bocanegra's Kitchen, y un trayecto corto por North Main para el daiquirí del final. Wazabi cierra domingo y lunes, y Bocanegra's Kitchen cierra los domingos. Así es el Distrito ACE en realidad, y es mejor que la sigla.
