Guide
Games, challenges and trip ideas from Visit Baytown: GeoTour, Art-Venture, birding and fishing
The free Baytown Bird Count is the easiest way in. It is a monthly survey at the Nature Center on the third Thursday of each month, September through May, starting at 8 a.m. No registration and no experience are needed.

The Baytown GeoTour
Geocaching is a treasure hunt with a phone or GPS: someone hides a small container, posts its coordinates, and you find it. Visit Baytown has an official Baytown GeoTour, which it describes as an adventure where family, history and nature come together. The tourism page links to a GeoTour listing, the rules and prizes, a passport to download, videos that translate the caches into American Sign Language and the Art Venture game. Start there for the current list of caches, since the tourism office updates them.
Art-Venture Lab in the Downtown Arts District
Visit Baytown created a puzzle hunt for the Downtown Arts District. To play, you download the Adventure Lab mobile app from Google Play or the Apple store and find "Baytown's Art-Venture Lab." You visit each of the nine listed art locations, read the history of the place, and solve the puzzle there to reveal a code. The tourism office says the spots make good photos and are best visited in daylight, and asks players to tag @visitbaytowntx when they share pictures. For the downtown streets themselves, see the Texas Avenue comeback and the ACE District.
Birding: the challenge and the monthly count
Baytown sits on two bird migration routes, and Visit Baytown promotes the area as a birding stop on the Upper Texas Coast. It points to the Baytown Nature Center, Houston Audubon sanctuaries at High Island, the Jocelyn Nungaray National Wildlife Refuge and the San Jacinto battleground as nearby hotspots. The Visit Baytown Birding Challenge gives you a way to earn a prize while searching for birds, and the Birding for Jewels Photo Contest invites wildlife photos taken at the Nature Center.
The free Baytown Bird Count is the easiest way in. It is a monthly survey at the Nature Center on the third Thursday of each month, September through May, starting at 8 a.m. No registration and no experience are needed. Bring water, snacks, insect repellant, sunscreen, a hat and your own binoculars or spotting scope. Joining the count also counts toward the Birding Challenge. For the guided November program, see Baytown Birding Week, November 18 to 22, 2026, on Visit Baytown's birding page, and for the best seasons, the Nature Center by season.
Trip ideas
The tourism office posts a few short itineraries.
- Texas history. The San Jacinto Monument is minutes away and rises 567 feet over the battlefield where Texas won its independence in 1836. Pair it with a ride on the free Lynchburg Ferry, which crosses the ship channel along the route Runaway Scrape families used. See San Jacinto Day and the ferry. - A summer on the water. The office suggests hiring a fishing guide from its list of local boat captains, fishing from the Nature Center piers, or launching a kayak from Roseland Park. - A nature weekend. Start at the Eddie V. Gray Wetlands Center, which is free and has an indoor baby gator pond, a working beehive and insect and reptile exhibits. Then spend a few hours at the Baytown Nature Center, $4 for adults 13 and older and $1 for children 5 to 12 and seniors. The center is 500 acres, has recorded 317 bird species and is open daily from dawn to dusk. - A half day of fishing. Baytown sits among four saltwater bays that feed Galveston Bay, and Cedar Bayou runs through town. Roseland Park and the Wetlands Center have free boat and kayak launches, the Nature Center has docks and bank fishing, and Thompson's Fish Camp has been a boat launch since 1952. Bayland Park gives boat access to saltwater inlets where the office says anglers find reds, speckled trout and flounder. See fishing in Baytown.
Before you go
- Download the Adventure Lab app and a GeoTour passport before you leave home, because cell signal can be weak near the water. - Bring water, a hat and bug spray. Most of these are outdoors. - Check the Nature Center's fees and hours on the city page before you drive over. - Do not stop on the bridge to take pictures; see the Fred Hartman Bridge for safe places. - For disc golf, see disc golf in Baytown.
