How Texas Avenue came back

Texas Avenue did not come back all at once. Public space, art, old buildings and a handful of stubborn businesses slowly gave downtown a reason to exist again, while the next chapter is still being written. For forty years downtown Baytown was the part of town you drove through to get to the part of town you were going to.

Texas Avenue did not come back all at once. Public space, art, old buildings and a handful of stubborn businesses slowly gave downtown a reason to exist again, while the next chapter is still being written.

For forty years downtown Baytown was the part of town you drove through to get to the part of town you were going to. Then, without much warning, it wasn't. This is what happened, and what it means for the next ten years.

What it was

Texas Avenue was the main street of Goose Creek before the three towns — Goose Creek, Pelly, and Baytown — merged in 1948. It stayed the main street for a generation after: the department stores, the Brunson Theater, the bank, the newspaper. The Brunson is the clearest marker. It opened on August 23, 1949, at 311 West Texas Avenue, ran as a single-screen movie house for 34 years, and then sat empty for about 35 years before the renovation that brought it back. Then Garth Road happened — the mall, the highway, the chains — and the avenue emptied the way every American main street emptied in the seventies and eighties, one storefront at a time until the last one noticed. By the nineties it was storefront churches, empty windows, and the Baytown Little Theater, a volunteer company founded in 1961, keeping a light on.

What changed

The city made a decision it could have made twenty years earlier. Designate the district. Fix the sidewalks and the lights. Put a square where the traffic used to be, and bet that people would come if there was somewhere to sit. The ACE District — Arts, Culture and Entertainment — was the name. Baytown Art Alley was the first thing people photographed, and by March 2019 a Houston television station was already reporting on the color and the food bringing downtown back. Town Square at 213 West Texas gave the town a place for the Market and the Friday open mics in season. It also gave it the ice rink that opens the day after Thanksgiving. And it gave it the Pre-Grito Party that opens Grito Fest each fall (the festival itself is at Bicentennial Park). The Baytown Sculpture Trail put rotating pieces along four blocks of the sidewalk, and the Art League of Baytown, in the old Woolworth building at 110 West Texas, anchors the gallery end.

And then a few businesses took the bet. Bocanegra's Kitchen at 214 West Texas does birria and queso tacos, with Taco Tuesday and a ramen special on Wednesdays. Wazabi at 206, in a historic building a block off the square, has a sushi bar that is open Tuesday through Saturday evenings. Rooster's Barbecue Co. at 6 West Texas reopened in May 2025 under new ownership as a barbecue-and-burger room in the corner the Cox family ran for decades. Como En México at 208 West Texas is the ice cream stop. The shops that turn over until one sticks fill in between.

What it is now

A few blocks that feel like a town on a Market Saturday and a festival night, and are still quiet at two on a Tuesday. The evening economy came back before the daytime one, which is the order these things usually run. The Brunson came back in a different form than a theater. It reopened on August 23, 2024, as the Baytown Visitor Information Center. The circular red lobby seating was rebuilt, with a reproduction of the original floor and a documentary about the theater's history, When the Lights Went Down, playing in the lobby. It is open Monday to Friday, 9 to 4. Downtown is smaller than the internet says — the bars people call "downtown" are mostly on Garth and the I-10 side — and better for being honest about it.

What it isn't yet

A dependable place to get coffee at four in the afternoon is still missing. The coffee house at the west end of the avenue, J & H Coffee House and Sno-Cone Express at 660 West Texas, shows up as closed on at least one map service, and the ice cream shop is the closest thing to an afternoon stop. A hotel: the Hyatt Regency is on the waterfront at 100 Convention Center Way, not on the avenue. A full-size grocery. A reason for the turnaround crews on Garth to drive in on a Wednesday. Those are the gaps, and they're also the opportunities. On main streets like this one, gaps like these usually get filled by one stubborn person with a lease and a bad idea that turned out to be a good one.

The tension

The San Jacinto Marketplace is the redevelopment of the old mall site out at I-10 and Garth. It will either pull the town's energy back to the highway or push it downtown, depending on what opens there. The developer's own updates put the first anchors in phases toward late 2026, with Sam's Club, Dick's Sporting Goods and a Pluckers among the names, and an outdoor green space later. Treat those dates as targets, not promises. Watch it. Downtown's next five years are decided on Garth.

What you can do

Go on a Tuesday. Buy the coffee wherever it is, eat at Bocanegra's Kitchen, sit in Town Square. Main streets come back one weekday lunch at a time, and this one is closer than it looks. Walk the Art Alley end first, then the sculpture blocks, then find a table.

Before you go

Street parking on Texas Avenue and the Town Square lots are the easy options on an ordinary day; on a festival night park a block or two away and walk. Wazabi is closed Sunday and Monday, and Bocanegra's Kitchen is closed Sunday (open Monday to Thursday 11 to 9, Friday and Saturday 11 to 10). The Art League gallery keeps gallery-day hours, typically Thursday to Saturday from 11 to 5, so call first. The Visitor Information Center in the Brunson is open weekdays only. The Baytown Little Theater at 2 East Texas Avenue staffs its box office only on performance days, so buy online ahead if you want a seat on a full night. The Market runs on selected Saturdays in spring and fall from 10 to 2, and the ice rink opens the day after Thanksgiving; check the city page for the exact dates.
