Baytown's Christmas season centers on the downtown parade, Town Square lights and a calendar of smaller events. The parade is held the first Thursday of December, which is Thursday, December 3 in 2026. The City's 2026 parade page lists 6:30 p.m. for the Town Square tree lighting, which is when the parade arrives at Town Square. It has not posted a route map yet, and the 2026 theme is Stars, Stripes & Christmas Lights. Sort out parking first, because parking decides the night.

The parade

This page lives at /events/annual/christmas and carries each year's dates from the calendar. Venues that move are never typed here.

Historic Downtown gets the parade on the first Thursday of December, in the evening. Floats come from churches, schools and youth leagues across town.

The high school bands, dance studios and fire trucks follow, with Santa at the end on whatever the fire department has decided he rides this year. The city counted over 200 floats and vehicles in 2024, the parade's 76th year. The route in 2024 ran from Bicentennial Park near Sterling Library and around Town Square. The whole town lines it, and West Defee and Market-and-Lee are the two viewing areas the City specifically describes.

Bring a chair, a blanket, and a thermos. December in Baytown is either sixty-five degrees or forty, never in between, and you won't know which until noon. The city holds it on a Thursday so the high school bands, choirs and teams can march after school.

That also keeps it from colliding with weekend events, Christmas On Texas Avenue among them.

- Parking: the City's standing parade guide says there is no parking on the parade route and warns against the Citizen lot near Town Square because cars can get trapped. It designates Memorial Baptist Church at 600 W Sterling Avenue for accessible parking and viewing on West Defee. Sterling Library at 1 Mary Wilbanks Avenue is the early-arrive, early-leave option. Bob Hope School at 304 N Pruett Street is overflow, and Lee College at 200 Lee Drive is the late-arrival option from the back roads. It is the same park-and-walk logic as Grito Fest. Recheck the 2026 event notice before relying on any one lot.

- Kids: front row, on the curb, with a bag for the candy that gets thrown. The city fully barricades a candy zone and returns any candy that lands outside the barricades, so children stay out of the street.

- After: Go to Town Square for the tree and the Holiday Hangout, then hot chocolate wherever's open. Heart and Whisk Bakery at 4618 N Main keeps Wednesday to Sunday hours. The Cuban Cafe at 4232 Decker opens at 4 a.m. on weekdays and closes at 7 p.m., 2 p.m. on weekends.

- Entering a float: the city takes entries through its calendar page, with a fee that is refunded at the mandatory check-in meeting. In 2023 the deadline was November 30, every entry had to be decorated, and the check-in meeting was at the Baytown Community Center. Santa is reserved for the parade's own. The link is on the calendar card when entries open. For a sense of timing, the 2023 deadline was November 30 and the check-in meeting was at the Baytown Community Center.

The families on the curb

The chairs go out at four for a parade at half past six, and the reason is that the curb has a memory. This is where your family sits, in front of this storefront, because your grandmother sat here when the Brunson still had a marquee. The dance studio your daughter goes to comes past, and you stand up. The band your son marched in comes past, and you stand up again. Your voice does something. Santa on the fire truck at the end is the least important part. The parade is the town walking past itself once a year so it can see who it is. The folding chair left on the curb afterward, saved for a family that already went home, is the truest thing on the avenue.

Parade rules and road closures

These are the rules on the City of Baytown's own parade page for Thursday, December 3, 2026.

- No parking is allowed on the streets of the parade route. Take your vehicle off the affected roads by 2:00 p.m. on parade day. - You cannot drive onto the closed streets again until the parade is over and the barricades come down, around 10:00 p.m. - Do not park in the Citizen lot near Town Square. The City says cars get trapped there. - Viewers with disabilities can use the accessible parking at Memorial Baptist Church, 600 West Sterling Avenue, and watch from the West Defee Street curb. - The Candy Zone is the only fully barricaded area along the route. Floats are asked not to throw candy along the rest of the route, so families with small children do best in the Candy Zone, where staff push stray candy back behind the barricade. - To march or ride, sign up as a participant with a float or a group through the City's recreation registration site. Light-up toy sellers can sign up as vendors, and the City says no other vendors are allowed. Volunteers sign up on the City's volunteer page. - Baytown Police Department's Blue Santa usually appears around the middle of the parade, and Santa Claus closes it.

The City also answers the question people ask most. The parade is on a Thursday so that high school bands, choirs and teams can march, and so it does not run into the weekend events in town and nearby. The full rules page is linked in the sources below.

The lights

- Town Square, 213 W Texas Ave — the 38-foot tree and the downtown lights, up from the parade through the Holiday Hangout. The city now lists the 2026–27 Hangout as running December 3 to January 5, with a full-size outdoor skating rink, a new hay maze, glow activities, yard games and a toddler play area (see the Holiday Hangout guide). Last season's had a roller rink, mini golf, yard games and movie nights. Free things include the toddler play area, lawn games and photo spots. Last season's Hangout (December 5 to January 6) charged $5 for youth under 18, seniors and veterans and $10 for adults for the paid activities, with hours of 5 to 9 on weeknights and 2 to 9 Friday to Sunday. The City has posted the 2026–27 dates and hours (4 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 2 to 9 p.m. Friday through Sunday, closed December 24, 25 and 31 and January 1) but not the prices yet, so treat the prices above as last year's. - The Art League of Baytown, 110 W Texas Ave, keeps a holiday gift gallery in December, two doors from Art Alley. - The neighborhoods — every year a few streets go all in. The calendar carries a lights map once addresses come in through the submit form. The Christmas guide has the Mont Belvieu and Crosby calendars, and the Cedar Bayou side usually has the best block. - The drive-through shows — the big commercial light shows change venues between seasons, and the old Raceway show went with the Raceway, demolished in 2023. Where the nearest one is this season is on the calendar card, not hard-typed here, because it changes. - The plants — not lights. But the refineries at night in December, with the cold air clearing the sky, are the local version of a skyline. The Hyatt terrace is the seat.

The season, in order

- Thanksgiving weekend: lights go up. The Market at Town Square does its holiday edition. - First Thursday of December: the parade, with the Holiday Hangout following. - Early December: the Baytown Little Theater at 2 E Texas Ave stages "It's A Wonderful Life" for two weekends, December 4 to 13 in 2026. - Mid-December: school concerts, the Lee College Performing Arts Center's holiday shows, church programs — all on the calendar. - Christmas Eve and Day: Sterling Library closed both days in 2025, the Nature Center closes on Christmas Day, and restaurants set their own hours. Check each page. - New Year's: the lights come down and the town goes back to Tex-Mex.

Trash, closures and fire rules

Trash does not skip the holidays. The hauler's holiday schedule lists City of Baytown service as continuing on Christmas Day, Friday, December 25, 2026, and as regular on New Year's Day, Friday, January 1, 2027. The city has posted no 2026 office closures for Christmas or New Year's Day yet. Baytown prohibits fireworks inside city limits, according to Chambers County's fireworks page, so the lights are the show. Burn bans come and go in dry weather, and both Harris and Chambers counties had one in effect in the fall of 2026. Ask the Baytown Fire Marshal about a fire pit inside city limits, and see the burn ban page for the current status in both counties.

Before you go

Use the City's standing parking plan — Lee College, Sterling Library, Bob Hope School or the accessible area at Memorial Baptist — then recheck the 2026 notice before you leave home.

Get to the curb early. West Defee Street and Market-and-Lee are the viewing areas the City specifically describes, and the good curb space goes first.

Dress in layers and bring a blanket. The evening can turn cold quickly, and you will be standing for a couple of hours.

Check the city's parade page a week before for the start time and route.

Parade entries have a deadline, a fee and a mandatory meeting, so ask the city about them in November.

Heart and Whisk Bakery, 4618 N Main, abre de miércoles a domingo.
