Questions people ask
Is my Baytown water meter accurate? How the city reads it, how to check your use and how to ask for a meter test
The result decides the cost. If the meter reads accurately, the city adds a fee to your next bill. If the meter reads inaccurately and runs fast, there is no charge, and the bill in question is adjusted to your average usage.
Who owns the meter and how it is read
The meter is the property of the City of Baytown. The city reads it every month, in thousands of gallons. Today's meters have electronic devices, so a crew can collect the reading with a drive-by unit instead of walking up to every box. Sometimes a person still has to read a meter by hand.
Keep the meter box clear
The city asks you to help protect the meter. When you mow, do not mow over or around the meter box. If the city has to replace or repair parts that were damaged by mowing or something similar, you may be charged.
Check your own use
You can read your meter yourself, daily, weekly or monthly. Subtract the previous reading from the current one to find how much water went through. The city suggests doing this when you water the lawn, fill a pool, or do anything out of the ordinary, so you can see how much that job used. Write down the date and time with each reading so you can compare.
Asking for a meter test
If you believe your meter is registering inaccurately, you can ask the city to test it. The city removes the meter and tests it against the American Water Works Association standard, which accepts a reading from 98.5 to 101.5 percent of the true amount.
The result decides the cost. If the meter reads accurately, the city adds a fee to your next bill. If the meter reads inaccurately and runs fast, there is no charge, and the bill in question is adjusted to your average usage.
The fee: two city pages, two numbers
The city's Water Meters page names a $25 fee for an accurate meter. The city's separate fee list on the Water Utility Accounts page, in effect since November 1, 2025, lists a meter test at $60.58 and a reread of the meter at $10 the first time and $25 after that. Because the two pages differ, ask Utility Services which amount applies before you request the test. A reread is a cheaper first step if you only want the number checked.
Before you go
- Read the meter on a day and time you can write down, and again after a few days.
- Check for dripping faucets and running toilets before you call about a high bill. See why your water bill went up.
- Keep the meter box clear of grass and mulch, and do not mow over it.
- Ask whether a reread or a full test fits your case.
