What jobs are there for young adults in Baytown?

Baytown has three solid routes for people in their late teens to thirties: healthcare support at Houston Methodist Baytown, the industrial crafts and plant-operator track through a safety-council card and a Lee College credential, and the school districts, where Goose Creek CISD posts openings year-round.

Baytown has three solid routes for people in their late teens to thirties: healthcare support at Houston Methodist Baytown, the industrial crafts and plant-operator track through a safety-council card and a Lee College credential, and the school districts, where Goose Creek CISD posts openings year-round. Office, retail and warehouse work fill in around them. The Baytown Chamber of Commerce also runs a free Young Professionals Council for people 40 and under. The work that pays most in the Houston area for someone without a bachelor's degree is on the plant side. The work you can start this month is the hospital and the district.

Route one: healthcare

Houston Methodist Baytown, at 4401 Garth Road, is the big hospital employer, and its postings run across clinical and support roles. Check its careers page for the Baytown openings, because the count moves from week to week. The Houston-area median wage for medical assistants is $20.25 an hour, for nursing assistants $18.26, for LVNs $30.61 and for registered nurses $48.00, all from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Lee College lists a nursing associate degree, a transitional-entry nursing option and certificates in phlebotomy and clinical medical assisting, and the paths run from a certificate to a two-year degree. Ask the hospital whether it helps with tuition, because it changes which step to take first. The medical assistant and X-ray tech page has the clinic-by-clinic list.

Route two: the plants and the crafts

ExxonMobil's big Baytown complex is the name everyone knows, and it rarely hires people with no experience. In mid-September its careers page showed no Baytown openings at all, so count on that changing and check again. The routes in are through contractors and the smaller plants. Chevron Phillips Chemical showed two Baytown postings, an operations support coordinator and a fixed-equipment inspections analyst. Energy Transfer showed four in Mont Belvieu, including an analytical technician and a utility man, and Targa Resources showed 14 in the Mont Belvieu area. The Energy Transfer list also had an operational technology specialist and a senior process-controls engineer. Those are degree-level jobs, so the same employer's list shows both the bottom and the top of the ladder.

The first step is the card from the Industrial Safety Training Council (ISTC) — Baytown Training Center, at 3166 Decker Drive, open weekdays 6:30 to 4:30, and then a helper job. Call or stop by for the current class length and fee before you plan around it. The Houston median for a pipefitter's helper is $21.52 an hour and for an electrician's helper $21.56, against $27.86 for a welder, $29.47 for a pipefitter and $40.43 for a refinery operator. The no-degree jobs page walks through each craft.

Lee College lists associate degrees of about two years, 60 credits, in process technology, instrumentation, electrical technology, industrial systems and pipefitting, and shorter certificates such as Welding Helper and Pipefitter Helper. Spring 2027 classes start January 19, 2027, and Summer 1 starts June 7, 2027. The Lee College McNair Center, at 3411 I-10, is one of its locations, and the main science and technology building is at 200 Lee Drive. Walk in during the same month you get the card, not the next year.

Route three: districts, offices and stores

The two school districts post their jobs on their own portals, Goose Creek CISD and Barbers Hill ISD, and both post year-round. Goose Creek's openings are on its careers page. Office clerks have a Houston median of $19.41 an hour and inspectors, testers and sorters $22.42, and the warehouse and freight jobs on I-10 and Highway 146 pay a median of $18.27 for laborers. Lee also lists a Logistics and Supply Chain Technology associate degree with certificates, which fit the warehouse and trucking jobs, and an entry-level heating, air conditioning and refrigeration technician certificate. Stores, hotels and restaurants hire all year. Workforce Solutions-Baytown, at 4308 Garth Road and open weekdays 8 to 5, can tell you which employers are adding staff and what funding you qualify for.

Young professionals, in the Chamber sense

The Baytown Chamber of Commerce, at 825 Rollingbrook Drive, runs a Young Professionals Council that meets on the second Thursday of each month at 9 a.m. at the Chamber office. Members must be 40 or under and commit for a year, and the Chamber says it costs nothing to take part. The Chamber also runs an Ambassadors Committee and a Partners in Education committee. They put you at the same table as the people who hire locally, and in a town this size a name you know on a first day counts for a lot.

A quick map of the first two years

This is one way the first two years can run for someone starting from nothing, and any step can be swapped for the hospital or the district.

  • Month one. Card at the safety council, a hospital or district application, a visit to Workforce Solutions.
  • Months two to six. A helper job, or a support job in a clinic, and a first class at Lee.
  • Year one. A certificate or a first semester of an associate degree, and a reason to ask for the raise.
  • Year two. An apprenticeship, a craft test or the nursing application.

Before you go

  • Check each employer's own careers page, because posting counts move every week.
  • Get the safety-council card before you apply to a contractor, since most want it on day one.
  • Ask any training program which employers hire from it and what the workforce board will pay for.
  • Bring an ID, a work history and a way to get to a 5:30 a.m. start.
  • Apply to the Chamber's Young Professionals Council if you are 40 or under and want the introductions.

Tercer camino: distritos, oficinas y tiendas
