Baytown with a dog

Baytown is workable with a dog, but the useful distinction is between places that welcome leashed pets and places that prohibit them. Plan the walk, patio and emergency backup before assuming every outdoor place is dog-friendly.

The dog park

Baytown does have one. The city lists a dog park among the amenities at W.L. Jenkins Park, 4334 Crosby Cedar Bayou Road, and the city's own events page calls it the Jenkins Bark Park. The park is open 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. A dog-park directory describes Baytown Bark Park as fenced with double gates, a separate small-dog section, an agility course, water stations and poop-bag dispensers, with free parking. It also says dogs must be vaccinated and spayed or neutered to use it, which is worth confirming with the city before you go. Jenkins Park around it has a playground, a splash park, a disc golf course and a park loop trail, so it is the one stop that works for the dog and the kid together.

The walks

- Not the Nature Center. Pets aren't allowed — service dogs only — and it's a bird sanctuary, so that's the right rule. Leave the dog home for that one. - Evergreen Park at 1530 Evergreen Road is the long walk: about 119 acres by the city's GIS count, the second-largest city park after the Nature Center, quiet, and not a programmed destination. Bring water and bug spray. Evergreen at seven on a weekday morning is as close to an empty park as the town gets. - Bayland Park shoreline is the sunset walk, on leash, with the boats to watch and the gulls to ignore. It is open 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., and parking and the boat dock are free. - Texas Avenue is the town walk, and Baytown Art Alley at 124 West Texas is a good turnaround point. The Sculpture Trail and the murals are always open. Bring your own bowl. - Goose Creek Trail is the bayou-side path, about six miles by the city's trails page. The easy start is the Wetlands Center lot at 1724 Market Street, closed Sundays as a building but not as a trailhead, and the south end is Bayland Park. Do a piece, not the whole thing. The parks inventory has the segments. - Town Square on Texas Avenue hosts the Market at Town Square, where the city says leashed pets are welcome, rain or shine. It runs the third Saturday of three months in spring and three in fall, ten to two.

The patios that say yes

Texas lets a restaurant seat a leashed dog on an outdoor patio only if the restaurant posts a sign, offers a way onto the patio from outside and keeps the dog off the seats and tables. We have not confirmed a posted dog policy at any Baytown restaurant, so the pet-friendly restaurants guide lists the patios to ask about rather than promising any. Yepez Vineyard has an adobe patio and picnic tables on FM 2354, open Friday and Saturday afternoons and Sunday from two. The patio at Anchor & Hearth in the Hyatt Regency is a maybe — call. Off leash

Off leash means the Jenkins Bark Park, as far as we can find. Everywhere else, the leash goes on. The city's parks inventory is the source, and the calendar carries park projects as they're funded. If the dog park is too much dog for yours, the fenced yard at a friend's house is the other dog park.

The practical

- Heat. From May to September the pavement burns paws after ten in the morning — the five-second test with the back of your hand — so walk at dawn or after dark, and the water bowl comes with you. Heatstroke in dogs looks like heavy panting and stumbling; shade and water first, then the vet. - Vets. Baytown Animal Hospital on Decker Drive is open Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 8 to 2; Abshier-Meuth Animal Hospital on TX-146 is open weekdays 8 to 5 and closed weekends; Garth Animal Hospital on Garth Road is open weekdays and Saturday morning. For after hours, both Baytown clinics send emergencies to Houston-area hospitals: Baytown Animal Hospital names BluePearl in Houston, and Abshier-Meuth names Animal Emergency Clinic Northeast in Humble, which is open around the clock Thursday through Monday and overnight on Tuesday and Wednesday. Know the address before you need it; the drive is the same at 2 a.m. either way. The regular vets are on the health page. - Microchips and the shelter. Baytown requires a microchip for each pet if you live in the city. City of Baytown Animal Services at 705 North Robert C. Lanier Drive microchips pets, handles lost-and-found and runs adoptions through 24Petconnect, and it is open Monday to Saturday noon to 5 p.m., closed Sunday. The number for a loose dog or a found one is on the city-hall page. - Hurricanes. The evacuation plan includes the dog or it isn't a plan: crate, records, a week of food, and a hotel on the list that takes pets — the pet-friendly hotels guide marks which do. Red Roof Inn on 146 takes the first pet free; Candlewood Suites charges by the length of the stay; Captain Suites doesn't take any. - Fireworks. The Fourth and New Year's are loud here even though the city bans fireworks. Inside, collar on, chip current.

Evergreen at seven on a weekday for the long walk, then Jenkins for the dog park on the way home, then Bayland at sunset with the leash short and a chair for you. Three parks, one dog, one good day. The Nature Center can wait for the day you leave the dog at home, and it will be worth that too.

Before you go

Confirm the dog-park rules with the city's Parks and Recreation office before your first visit, since the city's page lists the park but not the entry requirements.

Carry water and a bowl for every walk between May and September, and take the paw test on the pavement before you start.

Leash the dog on the Bayland shoreline, the Goose Creek Trail and downtown, and keep to the leash at the Market at Town Square, where leashed pets are welcome.

Keep the microchip registration current, since the city requires a chip and the shelter scans for one.

Call ahead before you plan on a restaurant patio, because the law requires a posted sign and none is guaranteed.
