What's happening in Baytown this week

How to read the board. - Tonight and this weekend — the two views most people want; Friday through Sunday grouped by place. - Free — most of what happens here is free, and the board says so on each event. - By place — every listing links to the venue's directory page, with the address, the map and the hours. - Surrounding areas — Mont Belvieu, Crosby, Highlands, Beach City and Cove on the same board, one tap.

The recurring anchors. Some weeks are written before the year starts. - First Thursday of December — the Christmas parade down Texas Avenue. - The Saturday nearest April 21 — San Jacinto Day at the battleground; the reenactment, the ferry, the crowds. - A September weekend — Grito Fest downtown, around 5,500 people and the biggest street party of the year. - November — Birding Week at the Nature Center. - The farmers market — Saturday mornings on the dates it actually holds; the board carries the feed. - The Chute — a band most Thursdays through Saturdays. - Friday nights in the fall — Goose Creek's three high schools and Barbers Hill; the schedules are on the sports page.

Grand openings. The board picks up ribbon cuttings from the Chamber's calendar and openings from the city's page, and the new-openings page lists every business that opened this month with the date. If a business is opening this week and isn't on either, it only announced on Facebook, which no calendar can read — and we don't crawl it.

Right now. "Events in Baytown right now" is a question with a real answer: the board marks the ones already underway, and the open-now page does the same for the places.

What isn't here. Private events, most church small groups, and anything a venue only posts as a flyer image. If yours is missing, the venue can post it to any calendar with a public feed and it'll be here the next morning.
