Neighborhood
Downtown Baytown is a historic main street in the middle of a visible comeback: Texas Avenue and Town Square, ZIP 77520, three walkable blocks with free street parking on ordinary days. Texas Avenue is strongest on event nights, but the blocks are becoming useful again between festivals too. The Market at Town Square runs the third Saturday of the month, and the next one is October 17.
Park once. Walk. The lawn is the living room.

The only trick downtown Baytown has: park the car and leave it. Texas Avenue is a few blocks, not a loop. The square is a lawn. Art Alley is a gap between buildings — behind 110–124 West Texas, next to the Art League, not toward Lee College. If you keep the engine on, you will decide there is nothing here, and you will be wrong in a small, fixable way.
This was downtown Goose Creek before 1948. I-10 later pulled the errands north to Garth. What is left is a short historic grid the ACE Council has been turning back into a place you might stay after dark. Town Square at 213 West Texas is the living room: Saturday markets 10–2, Friday open mics in season, Pre-Grito October 2 at 6, ice after Thanksgiving. Sculpture Trail (the 2026 set is up through March 22, 2027) runs the square, Ashbel, and the 100–400 blocks of West Texas. Howdy mural is two minutes off, 123 West Defee.
Eat on the street you parked on. Rooster’s at 6 West Texas, Tuesday–Saturday 11–8, banana pudding, closed Sunday–Monday — do not arrive at 8:45. Bocanegra’s at 214, birria and queso tacos, closed Sunday. Wazabi at 206, spicy tuna nachos, Tuesday–Saturday 5–10. Anchor & Hearth is not here; that kitchen is at the Hyatt on the marina. The Little Theater at 2 East Texas has had a marquee since 1961. Be in the seat fifteen minutes early.
Come Friday evening or Saturday morning if you want the downtown the flyers promise. Come Monday afternoon if you want quiet sculptures and a closed steakhouse — that is also downtown, and it is still worth the walk. Festival nights, park at Lee College. On a normal Saturday the street is enough. This is not Houston. It is a few blocks of people who stayed.
Parking. Street on Texas Avenue and the Town Square lots. Festival nights: Lee College.
Downtown is the part of Baytown that had to become a place twice. Texas Avenue was the main street of Goose Creek before consolidation, then the highway era pulled daily life toward Garth Road and the storefronts went quiet one by one. The comeback is recent enough that people still talk about it as a project instead of a fact.
That is part of the appeal. The scale is still three blocks. You can park once, walk the avenue, cross Town Square, look through Art Alley and be back where you started before anybody in Houston has found a garage space.
On a Market Saturday or a festival night it feels like a small Texas town again. At two on a Tuesday it can still feel unfinished. Both are true, and the second one is why people root for it.
Texas Avenue numbers outward from Main Street, so the address tells you where you are. The Baytown Little Theater is at 2 East, Town Square at 213 West, the Visitor Information Center at 311 West and the speakeasy 510 West at 510 West. Past that the avenue runs on to Lee College, where the Lee College Theatre is listed at 805 West Texas. One block north, Defee Avenue holds the museum. Bicentennial Park sits at 1001 Market Street, about half a mile west of Town Square, with Lee College and the library beside it. South Main leads to Pelly Park. The ZIP is 77520, and Highway 146 runs north and south a short way east of the avenue, which is how you reach the bridge and the ship channel. North Main carries the evening farther north. The ACE District guide walks the avenue block by block.
The meal is on the 200 block of West Texas. Bocanegra's Kitchen, at 214 West, is the Tex-Mex place the town adopted fastest: queso tacos in flour tortillas, birria when it is on, a happy hour most weekdays from 2 to 4, and closed Sunday. More on that style of cooking in the taco guide. Wazabi, at 206 West, is the calm sushi bar, open Tuesday to Saturday from 5 to 10, and the spicy tuna nachos come first. Como En México, at 208 West, sells ice cream from 10 to 9, opening at noon on Sunday. Rooster's Barbecue Co., at 6 West, reopened in May 2025 under new owners. Order the burger the first time and call ahead, because the listed hours disagree. For a late drink, 510 West is a speakeasy listed for Thursday to Saturday from 7 to 11. Coffee is thinner: the bakery people cross town for, Heart and Whisk, is a short drive up North Main.
Town Square is the civic lawn: the Market on the third Saturday from 10 to 2 in spring and fall (the fall 2026 dates are September 19, October 17 and November 21, so two are left), open mics in season, and the ice rink from the day after Thanksgiving through January. It is the one city park where alcohol is allowed. Behind 110 to 124 West Texas, Baytown Art Alley has more than a dozen murals and costs nothing, and the Baytown Sculpture Trail is the same free walk, a rotating set of outdoor pieces along the avenue. The Art League of Baytown, at 110 West in the old Woolworth building, runs the gallery, usually Thursday to Saturday from 11 to 5. The Little Theater has put on a volunteer season since 1961, and its box office is staffed only on performance days.
A block north, the Baytown Historical Museum at 220 West Defee is free and sits in Goose Creek's 1930s post office. Its hours are posted two ways, Wednesday to Saturday from 10 to 4 in one place and Tuesday to Saturday from 10 to 2 in another. So call.
Out west, Sterling Municipal Library, at 1 Mary Wilbanks Avenue, is open 10 to 8 Monday to Thursday and 10 to 5 Friday and Saturday. Bicentennial Park is about thirteen acres where the city holds Grito Fest (this year's was Saturday, October 3) and the Fourth of July. The Lee College Performing Arts Center at 200 Lee Drive books the symphony and touring acts.
For kids, Pelly Park at 901 South Main has a playground, pavilion and splash pad. The city's splash parks run 10 to 8 during daylight saving time.
Downtown is Goose Creek CISD, rated B (80) for 2026, up from C (78) in 2025. Robert E. Lee High School is at 1809 Market Street and rated B (88). IMPACT Early College High School, at 1415 Market Street, is rated A (96). George Washington Carver Elementary, at 610 South Pruett, is rated D (68), and Ashbel Smith Elementary, just east of Main at 403 East James, is rated F (59). Those are campus grades, not block grades. The district can tell you which campus a specific address feeds, so ask before you rely on any of them.
Parking is free and on the street on ordinary days, with Town Square lots behind the avenue. See the downtown parking guide for event nights. The city's utility office is at 315 West Texas, open Monday to Thursday from 7:20 to 5:30 and Friday from 7:30 to 11:30. On flooding, the city sits in Class 5 of FEMA's Community Rating System, which carries a 25 percent discount on flood premiums. But the discount is not a flood map: look up the address. The city's adopted FY2027 capital list, the budget year that began October 1, carries Danubina-area drainage work, east of Main and a few blocks from the avenue, at about $7.4 million with no funding source yet. The Census puts the mean commute for Baytown at 25.4 minutes, and from downtown the short trips are to Lee College, the plants and Garth Road.
Downtown is stronger at night and on event days than at ordinary weekday noon. If you want a fully walkable district with groceries, school, coffee and errands on foot, this is not that yet. If you want an older street where you can watch the town trying something, it is the most interesting few blocks in Baytown. Every good new tenant matters and every empty window shows. Baytown spent decades choosing somewhere else; the recent years have been an argument for coming back.
Come on a Friday just before dusk. Walk Texas Avenue from the west end to Town Square, take the mural alley slowly, and stay until the lights come on. If the square is empty, sit anyway. If it is full, you will understand why the comeback mattered.
South Main lleva a Pelly Park.

Ours to fix
We read every one, and we write back when it's fixed.
