IllustrationReading with a child works because of the person beside the book as much as the book itself. Read early, repeat shamelessly and use the language that feels most natural in your home.
The first books are usually ridiculous.
A cow makes a noise. A truck goes somewhere. The moon appears in a window. The plot would not survive adult criticism.
The child does not care.
They care that you are there.
The American Academy of Pediatrics encourages shared reading beginning in infancy because reading together supports language, cognitive and social-emotional development and the relationship between child and caregiver.
At home, the important part can be much smaller than the science sounds.
Ten minutes.
The same book again.
A toddler turning three pages at once.
A parent who cannot remember whether this is the third reading tonight or the fifth.
There is a particular kind of exhaustion that belongs to a parent who knows a children's book by heart.
You know when to turn the page without looking. You know which sentence your child will say before you do. You know where the bear is hiding.
Read it again.
Not because repetition is noble. Not because every bedtime needs to become an educational intervention.
Read it because, for a few minutes, a small person is asking for the same world again and trusting that it will still be there.
Childhood keeps moving. Shoes stop fitting. Teachers change. Teeth fall out. A familiar story is one of the places that can hold still.
And one evening, without ceremony, the child who demanded the book forty times will stop asking for it.
You may not notice it was the last time.
A family does not need to reduce itself to school English at story time.
Talk. Sing. Tell stories. Read in the language that comes naturally.
A child's languages are not enemies.
The AAP's literacy work emphasizes developmentally and culturally appropriate books and recognizes that stories can support identity, culture and belonging.
If reading itself is hard for the adult, the relationship still counts: - describe the pictures; - tell the story from memory; - ask what the child sees; - listen to an audiobook together; - let an older sibling read; - use the library.
Do not turn literacy promotion into a test of the parent's own schooling.
Keep reading together sometimes.
Independent reading does not make your voice obsolete.
Older children may like: - chapter books; - comics and graphic novels; - nonfiction; - sports; - weather; - history; - fantasy; - instructions for how something works; - audiobooks.
Curiosity is allowed to have different typography.
If reading is persistently hard, ask the teacher what they are seeing and bring the concern to your child's clinician when appropriate. Vision, hearing, language and learning differences can all change the experience of reading; a website should not guess which one is present.
Sterling Municipal Library belongs in this story for a simple reason: a public library lets a child return and choose again.
A library card is a small civic document. Plastic, barcode, name.
It may be the first card with the child's own name on it.
There is something quietly American about a room where curiosity does not require a purchase.
A child can arrive interested in dinosaurs and leave interested in weather. A teenager can use the building because home is loud. A parent can sit in air conditioning without buying anything.
See Things to do with kids for the library and other inexpensive family outings.
Sterling Municipal Library, at 1 Mary Wilbanks Avenue, is open Monday to Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed Sunday. The city's page says you can apply for a card online, and its calendar lists bilingual story times, Tiempo de Cuentos, several times a month. There is an on-site lot on Mary Wilbanks Avenue and street parking on Defee. The library also takes meeting-room reservations and teen volunteers, and it has a digital collection for the nights the car is somewhere else.
In Crosby, the Harris County Public Library's Crosby Edith Fae Cook Cole Branch Library, at 135 Hare Road, lists Lil Buds Toddler Story Time and Preschool Story Time at 10:30 a.m. on set dates through the month. Its hours are Monday noon to 8, Tuesday and Wednesday 10 to 6, Thursday 10 to 8, Friday 1 to 6 and Saturday 10 to 5, closed Sunday. The system says its cards are free and available to Harris County residents.
In Mont Belvieu, the Sam and Carmena Goss Memorial Branch of the Chambers County Library System is at 1 John Hall Drive. Not far away, the Chambers County Children's Museum, at 10955 Eagle Drive, lists Tiny Tales, a story time, and Toddler Time among its programs, though it is a museum with an admission price rather than a lending library.
Ask each library who can get a card and what it needs to see, since the rules differ between the city library and the county systems.
It is not a race to make a preschooler read early.
It is not proof of good parenting.
It is not a reason to compare one child with another.
The deeper goal is to keep the door to language, story and written worlds open.

Ours to fix
We read every one, and we write back when it's fixed.
