Raising kids in Baytown

Things to do with kids in Baytown

Things to do with kids in BaytownIllustration

Baytown is unusually good at the low-cost family day: water, marsh, ferry, library, parks and a nearby children’s museum. Pick one thing, check today’s hours and let the outing be smaller than the memory it creates.

Pick the day by the weather

  • Hot day: use water or indoor options.
  • Cool morning: use trails or the Nature Center.
  • Rainy day: use the library or children’s museum.
  • Short outing: ride the ferry if the route works.
  • Longer outing: combine one attraction with one meal.
  • Check seasonal openings before promising a water park.
  • Bring sunscreen and water.
  • Bring dry clothes after splash pads.
  • Let one stop be enough for small children.
  • Use free places often instead of saving them for guests.
  • Check closures before crossing town.
  • Leave before everyone is miserable.

The fuller answer

Some days you need to get everyone out of the house, spend very little money and come home with tired children. Baytown is good at that. Most of what's here is free or close to it, and none of it needs a reservation.

The days your children will remember are rarely the expensive ones. They'll remember the afternoon the water jets caught them by surprise, a crab they saw from the pier, the ferry ride where they stood at the rail and waved at a ship. You'll remember that too, probably better than they will.

Splash pads, free

The City of Baytown runs six splash parks. They're free, and during daylight saving time they typically run 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Check the city's page before you go, since hours change with the season and with maintenance. - Central Heights Park, 503 Atlantic - McElroy Park, 4403 Craigmont - Roseland Park, 100 Roseland Drive - Pelly Park, 901 S. Main - Bergeron Park, 1520 Louisiana - Jenkins Park, 4334 Crosby Cedar Bayou Road

Bring water shoes, because the concrete gets hot, plus sunscreen and a towel for the ride home. The city says the splash parks run on Daylight Saving Time dates, so they close for the winter, and the parks around them stay open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. City of Baytown splash parks.

The city water parks

Baytown runs two water parks in summer, and they're built for different ages. - Calypso Cove, 2428 W. Main in N.C. Foote Park, is the small one, made for toddlers and young children: a little slide, splash zones, and a swim-diaper rule that tells you who it's for. It's a good first water park for a child who isn't ready for the big one. Parking is in the N.C. Foote Park lot on West Main. - Pirates Bay Waterpark, 5300 East Road, is for everyone else, with the tall slides and the lazy river. Parking is on site, and the lots fill on summer Saturdays.

Both are summer parks. In 2026 the season opened May 23; Pirates Bay ran through August 30, and Calypso Cove kept daily hours until August 9 and weekend hours after that. Both are closed for the year now, and Pirates Bay was already selling 2027 season passes. Check the water parks' site in spring for the new dates, hours and admission, and see our water parks guide before you load the car.

The Baytown Nature Center

There's a story under this one worth telling your children. The land on the peninsula was once a neighborhood called Brownwood, begun in the late 1930s, with a few hundred homes on the water, some of them built by the oil company's own managers. Over the decades the ground sank, around ten feet, as groundwater was pumped out beneath the region. The bay crept into the yards, and after Hurricane Alicia in 1983 the neighborhood was given up. In the 1990s the city let the water and the birds have it. Today it's a nature center, at 6213 Bayway Drive, with trails, piers and a great deal of sky.

It's a good place to teach a child to be quiet and look, and to show them that a town can turn a loss into something good. The center is open every day of the year except Thanksgiving and Christmas, and extreme weather; the gates open 30 minutes before sunrise and close 30 minutes after sunset. The city's listing shows about $4 for adults and $1 for children 5 to 12. Check the city's page before you go, and see the Nature Center by season for what to look for when.

The Eddie V. Gray Wetlands Center

On Market Street, in a building that used to be a bowling alley, the city runs a wetlands education center on Goose Creek. Local schools bring field trips here, and it has held summer science camps for kids. Admission is free, and the center is open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 10 to 4, closed Sunday. Parking is in the lot on Market Street, which is also the trailhead for the Goose Creek Trail, and the trail stays open when the center is closed. Check the city's parks pages for what's on this season.

The Lynchburg Ferry

A small free ferry, run by Harris County (Precinct 2), crosses the Houston Ship Channel between Baytown and the San Jacinto Battleground side. It runs Monday to Friday from 4:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on weekends from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and it doesn't run on the major holidays: New Year's Day, Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. On the Baytown side, park in the north landing lot at Burnet Park and keep out of the ferry queue. To a four-year-old, driving the car onto a boat is about the best thing that can happen on a Tuesday. On the far side is the San Jacinto Monument, where Texas won its independence in 1836, which is a story for when they're a little older. The ferry sometimes closes for weather or repairs, so check Harris County Precinct 2's page before you set out. The Battleship Texas, which used to be moored at San Jacinto, is no longer there; it is being restored at Galveston's Pier 15, so don't promise the kids a battleship.

The children's museum

The Chambers County Children's Museum at 10955 Eagle Drive in Mont Belvieu is built for ages 0 to 12. It's open Tuesday through Saturday 10 to 5 and Sunday noon to 5, and closed Monday. Admission is $9 for everyone 1 and older, and babies under 1 get in free. The museum has about 17,000 square feet indoors and a 10,000-square-foot outdoor area called Recess, with water walls, gardens and a sand pit, and it offers memberships. It's a good answer to a rainy Saturday, and to a 100-degree one.

The library

Sterling Municipal Library, at 1 Mary Wilbanks Avenue, has bilingual story times, Tiempo de Cuentos, several times a month. It makes a gentle first outing for a new parent and a baby, and a chance to meet other parents who are just as tired as you are. The library is open Monday to Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 to 5, and closed Sunday, and dates change by month, so check the library's calendar. While you're there, get your child a library card. It may be the first card with their name on it. Reading with children has the rest.

Before you go

  • Check the season and the hours on the day, since the splash parks follow Daylight Saving Time, the water parks are summer-only and the ferry keeps different weekend hours.
  • Bring water and shade for every outing, because the CDC notes that babies and young children are especially sensitive to heat.
  • Take water shoes to the splash parks, and expect the lots at Pirates Bay to fill on summer Saturdays.
  • Keep a rainy-day plan, the Wetlands Center on a weekday morning or the children's museum, so that a storm cancels the outing and not the day.
