Why they're here

The town exists because of oil. The Goose Creek field had its first oil on June 2, 1908, and the breakthrough came on August 23, 1916, when contractor Charles Mitchell brought in a 10,000-barrel gusher at 2,017 feet. By that December, drilling along Goose Creek, Tabbs Bay and Black Duck Bay was making about 5,000 barrels a day, and the field peaked in 1918 at nearly nine million barrels for the year. Humble Oil & Refining chose the ship channel site in 1917, broke ground in the fall of 1919 and had the refinery finished by April 1921, though ExxonMobil itself counts the complex from 1920. Humble became Exxon, and the refinery became the ExxonMobil Baytown Complex, 5000 Bayway Drive, a refinery, a chemical plant and an olefins plant on one fenceline along the channel.

It is the reason a city of about 86,561 people (the Census Bureau's latest estimate; the 2020 count was 83,701) has a skyline of stacks instead of towers, and the reason the town's three original settlements, Goose Creek, Pelly and Baytown, became one city. Pelly annexed Baytown in December 1945, Pelly and Goose Creek voted to consolidate in early 1947, and the City of Baytown was established on January 24, 1948. The Baytown Historical Museum at 220 W Defee St tells that story in the old Goose Creek post office. It is free and a block off Texas Avenue, with street parking on Defee. Public listings disagree on its hours, Wednesday to Saturday from 10 to 4 in the recent ones and Tuesday to Saturday from 10 to 2 in older ones, so confirm before you make it the morning.

Who else is here

- ExxonMobil — the company's own Baytown page describes a complex of 3,400 acres and approximately 7,000 people. Its products include gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, lube base stocks, and petrochemicals such as polypropylene, aromatics and butyl rubber. Its ExxonMobil Chemical Co at 13330 Hatcherville Rd, up the road in Mont Belvieu, makes polyethylene and counts as part of the Baytown complex. - Chevron Phillips Chemical, Cedar Bayou — on the east side, at 9500 I-10 East, exit 796, not off Highway 146. The company lists 2,100 acres and 2,200 people including contractors, and makes ethylene, polyethylene, normal alpha olefins, polyalphaolefins and 1-hexene. - Covestro, Baytown — the former Bayer site at 8500 West Bay Road, running since 1971, with more than a thousand employees on a site of about 1,700 acres. It makes raw materials for polyurethane foam and polycarbonate. - Mont Belvieu — ten minutes up 146, not a plant but a hub, where natural gas liquids are stored in underground salt-dome caverns and sorted at fractionators. Enterprise Products' Mont Belvieu / Chambers County NGL complex sits at 10207 FM 1942 and separates the mixed stream into ethane, propane, normal butane, isobutane and natural gasoline. Targa Resources' Mont Belvieu fractionation plant, at 10119 North Highway 146, does the same and ties into export terminals. Both are working industrial sites, so you see them from the road. - The contractors — the firms that actually swing the wrenches during a turnaround. ExxonMobil's page says its 2025 turnarounds added roughly 3,500 extra workers over about two months, with work that often runs around the clock. Thousands of badges, most of them not from here.

What you're looking at

The flame at the top of a tall stack is a flare. It's a safety system: when a unit upsets, gas is burned off rather than released. A big flare is loud, bright, sometimes smoky, and almost always not an emergency. A shelter-in-place is different: sirens, a text from the city alert system, and instructions to close windows and turn off the AC.

The outdoor warning sirens are tested every Wednesday at 9 a.m. for one minute, so a test at that hour is only a test. What they make

Start with the smallest thing. Ethylene is two carbons and four hydrogens, and it is the hormone a banana makes to ripen itself. The olefins plants make the same molecule by cracking hydrocarbons at very high temperature, and Cedar Bayou lists it first among its products. Chained together it is polyethylene, the grocery bag, the milk jug, the pipe under the street. The refinery turns crude into gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, and the lube side makes the base oils that go into engine oil. Covestro's side makes the raw materials for the foam in a car seat and the clear plastic in a pair of glasses. Up in Mont Belvieu the fractionators do the sorting, splitting one mixed stream into the propane in a barbecue tank and the ethane a cracker eats. A big flare is loud, bright, sometimes smoky, and almost always not an emergency.

Where to see it

The public places that give you the scale are free or nearly so. The Fred Hartman Bridge on Highway 146 carries you over the channel with the whole fenceline laid out below; keep driving, because there is nowhere to stop on the span, and the bridge guide has the side-street spots for photographs. The Baytown Nature Center at 6213 Bayway Drive charges $4 for adults and $1 for children 5 to 12 and seniors 65 and up. It opens 30 minutes before sunrise, and its peninsula gives the clearest views of the bridge over the bays.

Why it matters if you don't work there

In the city's FY2025 annual financial report, Exxon Mobil Corp is fourth on the list of principal taxpayers, at about $70.9 million in taxable assessed value. The plants bring the turnaround crews, who fill the RV parks and extended-stay hotels for weeks and eat breakfast at four in the morning. If you've wondered why Baytown has so many hotels and a Cuban café that opens before dawn, that's why. Baytown is also a bilingual town: about 42 percent of residents age 5 and up speak a language other than English at home, and 38 percent speak Spanish. The ferry's first weekday crossing is at 4:30 a.m., which suits a town with shifts to make.

There is new work coming, too. ExxonMobil announced a final investment decision on August 26, 2025 for a Baytown refinery reconfiguration to expand Group III lube base stocks. The company has said startup is expected in 2028, and the project carries more than 1,000 construction jobs.

Por qué están aquí

La ciudad existe por el petróleo. Lo que está viendo

La llama en lo alto de una chimenea es una antorcha de quema (flare). Es un sistema de seguridad: cuando una unidad se altera, el gas se quema en lugar de escaparse. Una llama grande es ruidosa, brillante y a veces humea, y casi nunca es una emergencia. Un refugio en el lugar es distinto: sirenas, un mensaje de texto del sistema de alertas de la ciudad e instrucciones de cerrar ventanas y apagar el aire acondicionado.

Las sirenas de advertencia exteriores se prueban todos los miércoles a las 9 a.m. durante un minuto, así que una sirena a esa hora es solo una prueba. Lo que fabrican

Empiece por lo más pequeño. El etileno son dos carbonos y cuatro hidrógenos, y es la hormona con la que el plátano se madura solo. Las plantas de olefinas fabrican la misma molécula rompiendo hidrocarburos a temperatura muy alta, y Cedar Bayou lo pone primero en su lista. Encadenado es polietileno: la bolsa del súper, el envase de leche, el tubo bajo la calle. La refinería convierte el crudo en gasolina, diésel y combustible de aviación, y la parte de lubricantes hace los aceites base del aceite de motor. Covestro fabrica las materias primas de la espuma del asiento de un carro y del plástico claro de unos lentes. En Mont Belvieu, las fraccionadoras separan una mezcla en el propano del tanque de la parrilla y el etano que consume una planta de craqueo.

Dónde verlo

Los lugares públicos que dan la escala son gratis o casi. El puente Fred Hartman, en la Highway 146, cruza el canal con toda la cerca de plantas a sus pies; siga manejando, porque no hay dónde parar en el puente, y la guía del puente indica calles laterales para tomar fotos. El Baytown Nature Center, en 6213 Bayway Drive, cobra $4 a adultos y $1 a niños de 5 a 12 años y mayores de 65. Abre 30 minutos antes del amanecer, y su península ofrece la mejor vista del puente sobre las bahías.

Por qué importa si usted no trabaja allí
