Cedar Bayou and North Baytown

Cedar Bayou and North Baytown feel older, more residential and less master-planned than the newer growth north of town. The appeal is mature streets, everyday parks and local routines. The tradeoff is that an older house deserves a more careful physical inspection. Jenkins Park (4334 Crosby Cedar Bayou Road) is open 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. and free, and Heart and Whisk on North Main is the morning stop.

The older residential north, where the streets have trees older than the houses and the houses are older than the plants' current names. Jenkins Park is the backyard. Cedar Bayou is the edge. The tracks are the line you cross to get downtown.

What it's like

Families, mostly. Ranch houses from the fifties and sixties on lots you can't buy anymore, a few new builds filling the gaps, churches on the corners, and a quiet that the Garth side doesn't have. It's the part of Baytown where people have lived in the same house for forty years and know which neighbor's grandfather worked which unit. Yard signs for the high school, trucks in the driveways, a lawnmower at seven on Saturday.

Jenkins Park

Jenkins Park, 4334 Crosby Cedar Bayou Road, is one of the city's most fully equipped parks. The city lists a playground and a splash deck, a skate park, a disc golf course, a fitness station, a dog park, athletic fields, a trail loop, pavilions and a rental building. The park is open 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily and is free, and the splash deck is listed for 10 to 8 during daylight saving time. Pavilions can be reserved through Parks and Recreation. The city's rule is full payment if you book within three months of the date, and alcohol is not allowed in city parks except at Town Square. Walk it early. From seven to nine on a summer morning it is the neighborhood's living room, and the youth-league Saturdays from March to June are the social calendar.

One line of the city's 2025 bond matters here. Proposition B, one of the two propositions that passed in November 2025, includes $451,000 to connect Jenkins Park to the Goose Creek Trail.

The bayou

Cedar Bayou runs the east side of the neighborhood down to the bay: slow, brown, full of catfish, and the reason Roseland Park is where it is. Roseland Park, 100 Roseland Drive, sits farther down the bayou, southeast of downtown. It is 21 acres, open 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily and free, with a playground, a pavilion, a fishing pier and a splash park listed alongside the boat ramp and kayak launch. The parking is on site off Roseland Drive. It is a quieter alternative to Bayland, a neighborhood park rather than a destination. After a hard rain the bayou rises fast, and the streets nearest it are the ones to check on the flood map.

Up the road, George and Freda Chandler Park, 6434 Crosby Cedar Bayou Road, is listed open 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, with the Chandler Arboretum at 6428 on the same stretch of road. The city's listing says little more than that, so treat it as a short stop on the way to or from Jenkins and see what it offers for yourself.

Eating and coffee

Heart and Whisk Bakery, 4618 North Main, is the reason to cross the tracks in the morning: espresso, a pastry case and cinnamon rolls, with a lot on North Main. It is open Wednesday to Friday from 7 to 5, Saturday from 8 to 5 and Sunday from 8 to 3, and closed Monday and Tuesday, so the pecan pie cinnamon roll belongs to the second half of the week. When it's sold out it's sold out. The Dirty Daiquiri, 2007 North Main, is the reason to cross them at night: frozen drinks, a drive-thru and a patio, open Tuesday to Thursday from 3 to 10, Friday and Saturday from noon to 11, Sunday from noon to 10, and closed Monday. Denna’s Donuts, 7328 FM 3180, is out east, open from 4:30 in the morning until noon or until it sells out, for the pre-dawn kolache. The jumbo jalapeño-cheese one is the order. In between, the taquerías on North Main are the lunch you find by driving past, and Baytown Washateria, 2125 North Alexander Drive, is the laundromat, listed open 7 to 9 daily.

Schools

North Baytown is Goose Creek CISD territory. Cedar Bayou Junior School, 2610 East Elvinta Street, is the school that shares the neighborhood's name, a public school for grades 6 to 8 with an 8:40 start. The district's high schools include Ross S. Sterling (300 West Baker Road), Robert E. Lee (1809 Market Street) and Goose Creek Memorial (6001 East Wallisville Road), and the zone lines run through the north side, so ask which one a specific address feeds. The district earned a B in the state's 2026 accountability ratings, listed at 80 and up from a C (78) in 2025. The schools page has the map and the bell times.

Moving here

Older houses mean older foundations and older plumbing. Get the inspection, and ask about the sewer line. Ask about foundation work, and ask what plumbing has been replaced and when. A mature street is an asset only if the house behind the trees is sound. The trade is a real yard, a real street, mature trees, and a short drive to everything in Baytown including the plants. Flood risk here is an address question, not a neighborhood one. Drive the streets after a heavy rain if you can, and look at drainage as closely as the kitchen. The streets nearest the bayou are the ones to check first, so ask the seller for the flood history and an elevation certificate, look the address up on the flood map, and read the hurricane page before you sign.

Walk Jenkins Park at eight on a Saturday in April, when the youth leagues are on and the shade is still doing its job. Then cross the tracks to Heart and Whisk before the case is empty. That's the north side's whole argument, and it's a good one.

Before you go

- Heart and Whisk Bakery is closed Monday and Tuesday, and the Dirty Daiquiri is closed Monday, so the coffee and the drink each have a day off. - Denna’s Donuts closes when it sells out, and its posted end time is listed as noon or 12:30, so go early. - Jenkins Park and Roseland Park are open 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., but the splash deck runs a shorter daytime schedule tied to daylight saving time. - Reserve a pavilion well ahead: the city takes full payment for bookings within three months, and alcohol is not allowed in city parks other than Town Square. - Check the flood map and ask for an elevation certificate before you make an offer on a house near the bayou.

Questions people ask

Is North Baytown a good place to live? The oldest residential side of the city: families, big trees, a short drive to everything. Older houses, so inspect the foundation and the sewer line.

Does Cedar Bayou flood? The bayou rises fast after heavy rain and the streets nearest it are the ones to check on the flood map, so ask for the address's flood history.

What's the best park in Baytown? Jenkins has the most going on, from the splash deck to the disc golf course.

- Heart and Whisk está cerrado lunes y martes; The Dirty Daiquiri, los lunes.
