Wood fire at the Hyatt, looking at the ship channel. Not downtown. Better than that.
Guide
A good Baytown date night does not need to imitate Houston. Use the water, Texas Avenue and one place with enough personality to make the evening feel chosen rather than convenient. You don't have to drive to Houston. Here's a night that works, in order, and three other nights for when it doesn't.

A good Baytown date night does not need to imitate Houston. Use the water, Texas Avenue and one place with enough personality to make the evening feel chosen rather than convenient.
- Choose one thing to make the night memorable. - Do not over-schedule dinner, drinks and three attractions. - Use sunset as the anchor when weather is good. - Keep an indoor backup for rain or Gulf Coast heat. - For downtown, park once and walk what is actually walkable. - For the marina, let the water do some of the work. - A local night succeeds when it feels intentional, not when it is expensive. - If the plan is simple, leave space to stay longer where the night is working.
You don't have to drive to Houston. Here's a night that works, in order, and three other nights for when it doesn't.
6:30 — A drink on the water. The Hyatt's terrace on the marina, 100 Convention Center Way. You're not staying there. Nobody checks. One drink, the sun going down behind the ship channel, the plants coming on across the water one light at a time. It's the strangest beautiful view in Texas, and it's ten minutes from your house.
7:30 — Dinner. Three ways to go: - Rooster's Barbecue Co., W Texas Ave — barbecue, a serious burger, and an easy downtown dinner when you want the local room rather than the hotel one. Check the current hours before a late start. - Anchor & Hearth Woodfired Kitchen — stay at the Hyatt and move to a table. It is open to non-hotel guests; the terrace side is the reason to choose it, and reservations are sensible on a Friday. - Luna's Mexican Restaurant, West Cedar Bayou-Lynchburg Road — the late one. Open until eleven on Friday, a patio, and a kitchen still going after downtown's has closed.
9:00 — Walk downtown. Texas Avenue is three blocks and Art Alley is lit. The Little Theater may have something on. Check the calendar before you leave the house. Then one last drink: the Dirty Daiquiri on North Main if you want the town's own drink, The Chute out on Garth if you want live music and a longer night, or Hooky Entertainment out on I-10 if you want to be twenty-five again with a bowling ball.
A night at the Lee College Performing Arts Center. The season opened with a film on the big screen for five dollars, and the rest of it is on the calendar. Dinner before at Bocanegra's on Texas Avenue, which closes at nine on a weeknight and ten on a Friday.
O'Neals on the Water on Highway 146 Business: fried shrimp on the patio by the marina (closed Mondays), then the Lynchburg Ferry at dusk on a weekday. It runs until eight, and it's free. Under fifty dollars, and better than most of the above.
Max Bowl, then C'est Bon for something sweet if it's open, then home. Or the PAC. See above.
Whichever night it is, start at the terrace. The view is the reason the rest of the evening feels like somewhere else, and it's the one thing here you can't get in Houston.
There is a small domestic luxury in not turning a date into a commute. No parking garage, no hour home on I-10, no babysitter text asking whether you are still in Houston. You can have one good drink by the water, eat somewhere that knows the town, walk three blocks and be home while the night is still yours.
That matters more after a few years of marriage than it did on the first date. A local night is not a consolation prize for a Houston night. Sometimes the romance is exactly that the grandparents are ten minutes away, the restaurant is familiar, and you still found a view you had forgotten to look at.

The free ferry that still crosses the Houston Ship Channel. Same route as 1836. Not 24 hours.
