Dinner, then what?Illustration

If dinner is done and nobody wants to go home, keep the second act simple. Downtown art, dessert, a short walk, one drink or the waterfront can add an hour without turning the night into a project.

The longer answer

The check is paid, and nobody wants to go home yet. This is where most restaurant guides stop. It's also where an evening starts to feel like an evening.

Baytown doesn't need a nightlife fantasy pasted over it. What it needs is a clear answer to a smaller question: what can we do for another hour?

Downtown: let the meal spill into the street

If you ate near Texas Avenue and the clock and the weather cooperate, downtown is the easiest second act. Visit Baytown counts 25 statues on the Sculpture Trail along Texas Avenue, a free outdoor exhibit that stays up year round, with pieces swapped out each April. Art Alley has 13 murals and a lock wall. Town Square sits in the middle of it, with the Arts District, the Baytown Little Theater and Lee College's performing arts center nearby.

That doesn't mean there's a show every night, so check the calendar. But public art doesn't need a reservation. A walk after dinner is allowed to be the whole second act. The block-by-block version is in The ACE District, and Parking downtown will save you a lap around the square.

Something sweet on the way back

Dessert is the cheapest second act there is, and downtown has one door for it. Como En México sits at 208 W Texas Avenue, next to Wazabi, and posts hours of 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 9 on Sunday. It's an ice cream shop, which makes it the easiest yes on the block for a table that has already argued about dessert.

Wazabi, at 206 W Texas Avenue, is a sushi bar open Tuesday through Saturday from 5 to 10, which makes it a late dinner more than a second act. It's worth a mention here for a small reason: Visit Baytown says the locks for the Art Alley lock wall are available at Wazabi, the Art League of Baytown and Del Mont Lofts, so you can pick one up and hang it.

If dessert is on the other side of town, La Flor De Michoacan is a paleteria at 1208 N Main Street with posted hours to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and Marble Slab Creamery on Garth Road, at 4567 Garth Road Suite 200, posts noon to 10 most nights and 11 on Friday and Saturday.

If something is happening

HERE Tonight and the full calendar show what's on: a market, a film, a performance, a festival, a game, live music, a City event. This page can't know what's happening on a given Thursday. The calendar can. Let it answer the date. This page is for the pattern.

If you want one more drink

The bars we've written up are on Drink; check current hours before you go. 510 West, at 510 W Texas Avenue, is a wine bar whose website says it operates by reservation, so it's a plan, not a drop-in. For a patio, The Dirty Daiquiri is at 2007 N Main Street, open Tuesday through Thursday 3 to 10, Friday and Saturday noon to 11 and Sunday noon to 10, closed Mondays. If you'd rather watch a game, City Lites at 421 E Texas Avenue posts noon to 2 a.m. daily.

If alcohol is part of the night, the rule that matters is simple: plan the safe ride before the first drink, not after the third. Texas sets the legal serving hours, and nobody needs to treat closing time as a challenge. One more stop should stay one more stop. The longer list of late kitchens is in Restaurants open late.

If the night wants water

The Baytown waterfront isn't one continuous promenade, and it's better not to pretend it is. For early evening, the Baytown Nature Center is beautiful at the right hour, but its gates close around sunset, so it's not a late-night plan. Later on, the waterfront restaurants and the hotel and convention-center edge of the channel can stretch the view. Not every shoreline is public access, so go where the lights and the listing say you're welcome.

If children are with you

After dinner doesn't have to become another event. Ice cream, a short walk, a few minutes at Town Square looking at the sculptures, then home. That's a whole good night for a four-year-old, and 8:30 p.m. means something different with one in the back seat. For the bigger family world, see Parents.

If older parents are with you

Distance matters. So do lighting, curbs and restrooms. A "nice walk" dreamed up by a healthy thirty-year-old may be a bad idea for somebody with a walker. Before you suggest the long way around, ask how far is comfortable, park closer than you think you need to, and let the slowest walker set the pace. That's not a compromise. That's the evening.

Why the public part matters

A good night out doesn't have to be a string of purchases: dinner, then another purchase, then another. A square, public art, a park, a show you already bought a ticket for, a festival lawn: these give an evening room to breathe.

That matters in a small city. A town that gives people somewhere to be after the check has made more than commerce. It has made public life, and public life is where neighbors turn back into people you know.

The hour matters

At 6 p.m., the answer may be outdoors. At 9, it's an event or a drink. At 11, it may just be food that's still open, and then home. Go by the real clock, the real calendar and the real weather. That's what HERE Tonight is for, and it will never pretend Thursday is Saturday.

Before you go

  • Park on Texas Avenue or in the Town Square lot, which Wazabi's listing says is open after 6 p.m., and walk the rest.
  • Check the hours for anything you plan around, because the ones posted for dessert shops and bars shift with the season and the day.
  • Book ahead for 510 West, since its website says it runs by reservation.
  • Give the sculptures a slow lap before you order dessert, since the trail is free and needs no ticket or reservation.
  • Pick the driver before the first drink.
