Date night

Date night in Baytown works best when the plan has two parts, not five. Choose one good table, then add water, downtown, music or a walk only if the clock and weather cooperate.

The longer answer

Date night in Baytown doesn't need a trip to Houston. It needs a little intention and a willingness to notice the water. The ship channel isn't a postcard ocean. It's working water: lights on the far bank, a tug moving like a slow thought, an industrial skyline that people who grew up here stop seeing until somebody they love asks them to look again.

Maybe you're trying to impress someone without looking like you tried too hard. Or maybe you've been married long enough that "impress" has turned into "remember." Both count. This page is for the table that interrupts the week in a good way.

Water first

O’Neals on the Water at 2651 TX-146 Business is Baytown's default date night, and for good reason: fried shrimp, a patio and the working water in the same frame. You come for the view as much as the hushpuppies. It's Gulf Coast and butter-forward, and honest about it. Order the shrimp platter and hushpuppies; on Wednesdays, oysters are the thing to ask about.

The weekly rhythms on the listing are worth reading. The kitchen closes before the bar, so don't count on late food on a quiet Tuesday just because the channel still looks pretty. It posts Tuesday to Thursday 4 to 10, Friday and Saturday 11 to 10 and Sunday 11 to 9, and it's closed Mondays. Sunday afternoon is when the patio turns into a scene with live music, and the lot fills on those days, so a quieter date belongs on a weeknight. For the broader view, see Waterfront night.

There's a kind of love that happens when two people share a basket of fried shrimp and stop talking about work for twenty minutes. It isn't cinematic, and it's better for it. The water does half the work.

Sushi off the square

Wazabi at 206 W Texas Avenue is the calm sushi bar, a block off Town Square, that downtown isn't supposed to have. It keeps Tuesday-through-Saturday evenings, 5 to 10, per its listing, and it is date night without leaving downtown: the loudest thing in the room is usually the knife on the board. Start with the spicy tuna nachos, then the Caterpillar roll, and sit at the bar if you'd like the chef to send out something that isn't on the menu. Parking is on Texas Avenue, and the Town Square lot opens up after 6. Check the listing before you go.

For something looser downtown, Bocanegra's Kitchen at 214 W Texas Avenue is a taco date: queso tacos in flour tortillas, birria when it's on, closed Sundays.

Golden hour at the vineyard

Yepez Vineyard is adobe walls, Texas grapes and a patio that feels like another county, twenty minutes from the refineries. The Yepez family built a small winery on the east side, at 12739 FM 2354, with outdoor space, Texas-grown grapes and a tasting room that runs on a narrow public schedule. Its current official site posts Friday and Saturday noon–6 p.m. and Sunday 2–7 p.m.; special events can follow a different calendar. The site says guests may enjoy picnics on the property, so bring a cooler and stay through golden hour. Order a tasting flight, then a glass of the merlot on the patio. Confirm before you drive out.

This is the most romantic thing Baytown does without trying. Trying harder would ruin it.

Wood fire by the channel

Anchor & Hearth Woodfired Kitchen is by the channel, at the Hyatt Regency, 100 Convention Center Way. It's wood-fired and better than "hotel restaurant" usually means, which helps when one of you is in town for work and the date has to happen where the suitcase is. Dinner runs Tuesday through Saturday from 5 to 9; start with oysters, then whatever came out of the stone oven, and walk the marina after. The hotel garage and valet are on site.

Two more rooms for dinner

On Garth Road, Nara Thai Dining at 4505 Garth is quieter inside than its parking lot suggests. It posts 11 to 9 Sunday through Thursday and to 9:30 on Friday and Saturday; the pad kra pao, the tom kha and the mango sticky rice are the orders to know, and when they ask about heat, the listing's advice is to say 7 if you mean it. Fuji Steak House and Sushi, at 5075 Garth Road, posts 11 to 10 Sunday through Thursday and 11 to 11 on Friday and Saturday. And if the date is a milestone with a steak in it, Saltgrass Steak House at 4400 East Freeway posts 11 to 9, with a 10 p.m. close on Friday and Saturday.

If dinner is really a drink with a view

The bars with write-ups are on Drink. 510 West, at 510 W Texas Avenue, is a wine bar downtown; its website says reservations are required, so book before you go. If alcohol is part of the night, be of age and plan the ride before the second round. Sometimes care looks like logistics. The full patio-and-drinks rundown is in the drinks list and Yepez Vineyard.

Love in a working town

A date in a refinery town is a small act of faith. It says the industrial skyline is allowed to be beautiful, and the people who stay here aren't settling. They're choosing a life with the water, a Friday-night stadium and Cuban bread in the morning. Love in Baytown is often practical first: who has the car seat, who has the early shift, who's driving. The waterfront dinner is where practical people remember they get to want something soft too.

For what's open this minute, use Open now.

Before you go

  • Skip Monday for O’Neals on the Water, and skip Sunday and Monday for Wazabi, because both are closed.
  • Confirm Yepez Vineyard's hours before the drive, since it opens only Friday to Sunday except for special events.
  • Book 510 West ahead, because its website says reservations are required.
  • Order your last round early at O’Neals on the Water, since the kitchen closes before the bar.
  • Name the driver before the first glass.

More

Look at the water together once. Order the thing you're both pretending not to want. And drive home like the town is worth keeping, because the people in the car already decided it is.
