Activities are less about finding the perfect program than finding one your child will keep showing up for. Start with schedule, cost and distance, then let the child tell you whether the field or studio feels right.
A practical way to choose
- Pick one activity before stacking the week.
- Drive the route at the actual practice time.
- Ask when the season starts and ends.
- Ask what registration does not include.
- Borrow gear before buying everything new.
- Watch one practice before committing when possible.
- Let a beginner be a beginner.
- Volunteer only for a job you can sustain.
The fuller answer
In Baytown, a lot of childhood happens on a field at 6:30 on a weeknight, or in a studio with a mirror on one wall. Somebody's dad is coaching after a twelve-hour shift, somebody's grandmother is keeping score from a lawn chair, and a child who has never kicked a ball is about to find out whether they like it.
Most of these leagues run on volunteers, parents who give up their evenings so that other people's children get a season. That's one of the oldest American habits there is, and it's alive here. If you can help, even by running the snack schedule, you'll get more out of the season than your child does.
The point, especially early on, isn't winning. It's learning to show up, lose, and come back on Thursday. Let them try a few things. The child who quits soccer at seven may be the one who lives in the pool at twelve.
And not every child needs a league. Running through a splash pad, riding a bike, climbing, dancing in the living room or inventing a game whose rules change every six minutes are also part of an active childhood. A full calendar is not proof of a full childhood. See Let them play.
Most of these leagues run on volunteers, parents who give up their evenings so that other people's children get a season.
This is where to find the leagues, the fields, the studios and the pools, and what to ask before you sign up.

Soccer in Baytown centers on the Baytown Soccer Complex, at 9600 N. Main Street, which lists baytownsaints.org as its site. The city's Little League parks are public parks, free to walk into and open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. by the city's listing: American Little League Park, at 301 W. Cedar Bayou Lynchburg Road, is a baseball diamond with restrooms, a pavilion, picnic tables and drinking fountains. National Little League Park, at 1306 Garth Road, adds a playground and a barbecue pit, and Champion Little League Park, at 1500 N. 10th Street, has a diamond and a day-use shelter. Which league plays where changes, so ask the league, not the park.
In Mont Belvieu, the Mont Belvieu Youth Softball Association is at 2770 N. FM 565 Road. In Crosby, the Crosby Sports Association is at 6800 Miller Wilson Road, and Crosby Youth Soccer Club lists an address at 409 Hare Road. In Highlands, Highlands Little League is at 925 E. Canal Road. Each has its own website and its own registration, so a child who plays soccer in one and baseball in another means two sign-ups, two schedules and possibly two fees. Write the dates on one calendar early, and you will not double-book a Saturday.
Registration for most leagues opens a few weeks before each season. We don't list sign-up dates unless the league publishes them — the league's own site or page is the place to check, and it's worth checking early; popular age groups fill.

Let's Dance, at 4618 N. Main Street, lists weekday hours of noon to 5 p.m. and Saturday morning to 2. Crosby Dance Academy is at 15110 FM 2100. Texas Academy of Acrobatics and Gymnastics, at 7310 Breda Drive, lists weekday hours of 4 to 8:30 p.m., and MB Elite Cheer and Radiant All Star Cheer and Tumble are listed under cheer and tumbling on the Mont Belvieu side. For martial arts, Baytown Black Belt Academy, at 855 Rollingbrook Drive, Suite 115, lists weekday classes from 4:45 to 8:30 p.m., and Kim Soo Karate Baytown, at 401 W. Francis Street, and Baytown Tae Kwon Do, at 2107 N. Alexander Drive, are the other studios we list. Most studios let a child try a class before you commit, and it is fair to ask whether yours does.
Swimming
In a town surrounded by water, swim lessons are a safety skill as much as a sport — see Keeping them safe. Local swim schools teach children of all ages. The CDC says more children ages 1 to 4 die from drowning than from any other cause, and lists swim lessons among the protections along with fences and an adult who is watching the water.
Getting the gear
You don't need the best equipment for a 6-year-old's first season. Cleats and shin guards get outgrown by spring; ask the league about a swap, check resale shops, and hand down what you can. For new gear, the sporting goods stores are on our shopping pages. Texas's sales tax holiday (in 2026 it was August 7–9) covers most everyday clothing and shoes under $100, including regular sneakers. It does not cover gear made mainly for a sport, so cleats, shin guards and pads are taxed as usual. The Comptroller's site has the full list.
Before you sign up, ask
- What does the whole season cost — fees, uniform, gear, tournaments?
- How many practices a week, and where?
- Are coaches background-checked?
- What's the plan for heat and lightning?
- How are teams placed, by birth year, by school or by tryout, and can your child play with a friend?
- What happens if your child wants to stop halfway through the season, and is any of the fee refundable?
- Who do parents call when practice is cancelled for weather, and how quickly do they hear?
Before you go
- Check the league's own site or page for registration dates, because we don't list sign-up dates unless the league publishes them.
- Ask the studio or league for a trial class or a practice to watch before you pay a full season.
- Look up the park or field address before the first game, since several league parks share names or neighborhoods.
- Pack water, a hat and a plan for lightning, since Baytown practices run through the hottest part of the year.
- Expect late-afternoon and evening hours at studios, which lists show mostly after school lets out.
