Mont Belvieu is a separate Chambers County city tied closely to Baytown by plant work, Highway 146 and school life. Families often trade a longer drive for newer housing and Barbers Hill schools.
Mont Belvieu is a separate city in Chambers County. In daily life, it is part of the same east-Houston orbit: plant work, school calendars, Highway 146 and Friday football. Families decide how much commute they will trade for a newer house. Ten or fifteen minutes can move you from Baytown's older streets into subdivisions where nearly every roof is the same age.
The landscape has two layers. Above ground are new homes, Eagle Pointe, schools, wide roads and the civic buildings of a fast-growing city. Below ground is the Barbers Hill salt dome, whose caverns are central to the natural-gas-liquids industry that made the local tax base unusually strong.
You can live here for years without seeing what is underground. But you see the consequences every day in the scale of the schools, parks and public facilities.
The city sits where State Highway 146 meets FM 1942, just north of Interstate 10 and about 32 miles east of Houston, according to the Texas State Historical Association. Eagle Drive is the main street for shopping, schools and civic buildings, with Mont Belvieu City Hall at 1 Town Center Boulevard and the Barbers Hill campuses strung along it. Eagle Pointe, the recreation complex, is at the southern end of Eagle Drive. The I-10 frontage, with the big-box stores and a handful of restaurants, is a short drive south, and Highway 146 carries the commute back down through Baytown. Most addresses are ZIP 77523, with 77580 on a few civic listings. The Mont Belvieu guide explains the salt dome and the practical geography.
Barbers Hill ISD is the first reason many house-hunting families put Mont Belvieu on the list. It is also why "Mont Belvieu" in a real-estate conversation often means more than the city limits. Nearby Beach City and Cove share much of the same school orbit, even though the addresses and governments differ.
The useful question is not simply whether the schools are good. It is what the school district does to the family's week. That means the commute down 146, practice fields and game nights.
It means friends living in subdivisions spread across the area. It can also mean a second car is effectively part of the housing cost. There is no meaningful transit substitute.
Eagle Pointe Recreation Center, at 12450 Eagle Pointe Drive, is the city's indoor anchor. It has courts, a heated indoor lap pool, tennis courts, a group exercise room, saunas, child watch and a half-mile trail. It is open 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 5 to 8 on Friday, 7 to 7 on Saturday and noon to 5 on Sunday. Next door, the Eagle Pointe Wave Pool is seasonal: in 2026 it ran daily from May 23 to August 9, then on post-season weekends into early September. That 2026 season is over; check the city page for the next season before making the drive. Eagle Pointe Golf Course, at 12440 Eagle Pointe Drive, has eighteen holes and driving ranges and is open 7 to 7 daily. The Pointe Grill, on the same property, serves lunch Monday to Friday from 8 to 2 and is closed on weekends.
City Park, at 10900 Eagle Drive, is the everyday park. It has ball fields, soccer fields, a trail, fishing, a playground and a skate park. Its splash pad runs 10 to 8 daily from March 1 to October 31.
Chambers County Children's Museum, at 10955 Eagle Drive, is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 to 5 and Sunday from noon to 5, closed Monday. The Sam and Carmena Goss Memorial Branch, at 1 John Hall Drive, is the county library branch, open Saturday 9 to 1 and weekdays until 5 or 7. Eagle Stadium, at 9752 Eagle Drive, is where a Friday in October puts the whole town in one place.
Eagle Drive is the main street for food as well as shopping. Salt & Brew, at 10403 Eagle Drive, is the morning stop for coffee and pastries, open Tuesday to Friday from 6:30 and Saturday from 8, closed Sunday and Monday. Craft 96 Draught House + Kitchen, at 9209 Eagle Drive, is the family-friendly gastropub with 63 craft-beer taps, open Monday to Saturday from 11 to 9 and Sunday from 11 to 8. Off I-10, The Toasted Yolk Cafe at 13001 Interstate 10 East serves breakfast and lunch daily from 7 to 3. Floyds Mont Belvieu, at 12621 Interstate 10 East, does Cajun seafood and steaks. It is open until 9 Sunday to Thursday and until 10 on Friday and Saturday.
The town is newer and more spread out than Baytown. Most major hospital care and much of the regional shopping still pull south. Plant traffic can turn a short drive into a longer one at exactly the hours families are also moving between work, school and practice. In return you get newer infrastructure, a strong recreation system and a city that still has the fiscal capacity to build ahead of some of its growth.
There is local pride here, but it is not Baytown pride with a different zip code. Mont Belvieu has its own council, police, county, schools and civic habits. Treating it as a subdivision of Baytown misses the point.
Mont Belvieu is in Barbers Hill ISD, not Goose Creek CISD. Barbers Hill Independent School District keeps its offices at 9600 Eagle Drive, and the Texas Education Agency's 2026 file rates the district A (93), with 8,069 students enrolled. That file gives the district rating only. Campus ratings and attendance zones for Barbers Hill are not in our verified data. So check the district's map for a specific address. Nearby Goose Creek CISD is rated B (80) for 2026, up from C (78) in 2025, for comparison.
The city offices are open Monday to Thursday from 8 to 5:30 and Friday from 8 to noon. So plan permit and utility questions around a Friday half-day. The city prohibits possessing or using fireworks anywhere in its incorporated area, city parks included, and confiscates them and may cite you. For flooding, Mont Belvieu is in Chambers County, not Harris County. So look up a specific address on the FEMA flood map rather than relying on Baytown's Community Rating System class. A so-called 100-year flood means a 1 percent chance in any given year. Over a 30-year mortgage, that repeated annual risk is about 26 percent. For a Mont Belvieu address, use the Chambers County and FEMA maps rather than borrowing a Harris County map. The commute down 146 is the main cost: the Census puts the mean commute for Baytown at 25.4 minutes, and Mont Belvieu is farther out.
Go to a Barbers Hill game on a Friday in October, or walk Eagle Pointe when the fields are busy. Look at the trucks, the grandparents in school colors, the new roofs beyond the lights. The hour explains the town.
How this town compares to the others: is it a good place to live? Two more small towns with their own real pages: Beach City and Cove and Old River-Winfree.
Mont Belvieu has its own city rules. See Mont Belvieu permits for generators, solar panels, driveways, sprinklers and debris, the six water shortage stages and how to ask police to check your house while you are away.
