Baytown for seniors and retirees

A lot of Baytown retired from the plants and stayed, which means the town is built for people who've been here fifty years and know it. Here's the map for the ones who just got here, or just got old enough to need it.

The everyday

• The library. Sterling, 1 Mary Wilbanks, is the daytime living room: large-print and audiobooks, the computer classes for people who'd rather not ask their grandkids, tax help in season, the local-history room with the photographs of the town you remember, and a chair by a window. Monday to Thursday till eight; the card is free.
• The Community Center and Parks & Rec. The city runs senior programs — exercise, dances, lunches, day trips, the card games — out of the community center; the catalog and the calendar have the schedule, and the phone number on the city-hall page is the one that answers. Registration is online or in person, and in person is fine.
• The Nature Center. Paved, flat, shaded on the boardwalk after two, benches every few hundred feet, and a dollar at the gate if you're over 65. The best walk in town for anyone with a knee, and the birds don't care how fast you go.
• The ferry. Free, a few minutes across, and the deckhands will wave you to the front of the lane if you're slow getting out to look. A Tuesday-morning outing that costs gas.
• The Market at Town Square. Third Saturday, 10 to 2. Early, before the heat and the strollers; the produce vendors know their regulars.
• The donut shops. The Wednesday-morning coffee group at Doughnut Wheel or Denna Donuts has been meeting for thirty years. Sit down; they'll make room.

Health

Houston Methodist Baytown is the hospital, with the only full ER in the city and the specialists; the urgent cares and the pharmacies are on the health page with hours. There is no 24-hour pharmacy in Baytown — the nearest is on the Houston side, and the health page has the distance — so refills are a daytime job; ask the pharmacy about 90-day fills and delivery. Dialysis, home health, hospice, and the cardiology and orthopedic practices most people here use are listed with phone numbers; if yours isn't, tell us.

Getting around

Harris County Transit runs a handful of routes through Baytown and the park-and-ride to Houston; the getting-around page has stops and schedules. Beyond that it's a car town. The senior and disabled transportation programs — the county's and the nonprofits' — are on the same page with how to sign up; the rides fill, so sign up before you need them, not the week of the appointment.

Money and paperwork

The over-65 property-tax exemption and the tax ceiling are the two things every new retiree in Harris or Chambers County should file for the first year, at the appraisal district, once; the moving-here page has the links, and the forms are simple. The county tax office handles the truck and the voter card in one visit. The library will help with any form, including the ones the state makes hard on purpose.

Faith and company

The churches page has every congregation with service times, and most of them run a seniors' group, a lunch, a ride, or all three. The VFW, the Legion, the Rotary and Lions, the garden club, the historical society, the quilting group at the community center — on the civic page with meeting times. This is a town that's good at company; find yours in the first month.

Hurricanes

The state's registry for people who'll need help evacuating — medical equipment, oxygen, no vehicle, mobility — is the single most important form on this list. The hurricane page has the link and the county's number. Register before June, every year; the list is rebuilt annually. And know your zone, and who's driving you.

Housing

The retirement and assisted-living communities, and the apartments with senior pricing, are on the housing page with what each has and what it costs when it's posted. Mont Belvieu and the north side have the newer ones; downtown has the walkable ones; the Bayway side has the views and the hurricane history.
