Baytown obituaries and funeral homes

Baytown obituaries appear through funeral homes, newspapers and online memorial pages. When someone dies, the practical work is choosing a funeral home, finding records and telling people clearly. The Baytown Sun publishes them, in print and online. Its obituary page at baytownsun.com/obituaries is the town's record and the one people search, with the newest at the top.

Where the obituaries are

The Baytown Sun publishes them, in print and online. Its obituary page at baytownsun.com/obituaries is the town's record and the one people search, with the newest at the top. This page links to it and doesn't copy it, because the notices belong to the families and the paper.

The funeral homes post their own on their sites, usually first, and the Sun says funeral homes often submit obituaries for the families they serve. Families can also submit directly once the paper verifies the death. The Sun's posted prices run from $50 for a pending funeral notice without a photo to $125 for a short obituary with one. Prices change, so check the Sun's page before you write a check.

Its deadline is noon the day before publication. Mont Belvieu, Highlands and Crosby each have funeral homes of their own, and those post notices on their own sites.

The funeral homes

Baytown's funeral homes, the ones families here have used for generations, are in the directory with address and website: the chapels, the crematory options, the pre-planning offices. Earthman Baytown Funeral Home is at 3919 Garth Road, Robey Funeral Home at 403 W Sterling Avenue, and Navarre Funeral Home & Cremation Services at 2444 Rollingbrook Drive. Toward the river, Sterling-White Funeral Home is at 11011 Crosby Lynchburg Road in the Highlands area, and Mont Belvieu and Crosby have their own homes. Ask each whether it posts obituaries online and handles out-of-state transport, because the turnaround economy means a lot of people here are from somewhere else.

You have rights when you buy. The federal Funeral Rule lets you get prices over the phone without giving your name. It requires an itemized general price list.

A funeral provider cannot refuse a casket or urn bought elsewhere or charge a fee for using it. No law requires a casket for cremation, and generally no state law requires routine embalming for every death. The Texas Funeral Service Commission licenses funeral homes, embalming centers and crematories and takes complaints by email.

The cemeteries

The city and the older churches maintain the historic cemeteries. Cedarcrest Cemetery is at 3010 Ferry Road. It lists office hours Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Earthman Memory Gardens Cemetery is at 8624 Garth Road on the Garth Road corridor. It lists daily hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. In the Crosby area, Evergreen Cemetery is at 13703 Sralla Road.

The veterans' cemetery is Houston National Cemetery at 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, roughly an hour away. It is open to visitors daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Its office is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Veterans who meet the service and discharge rules may be eligible for burial there. Spouses and certain dependents may be eligible too.

The directory has the rest, with the office hours for plots and records, and the history pages have the older ones with the markers.

What the town does

The church meal, the casserole, the fund at the credit union, the memorial on the ballfield fence. The churches page says which congregations run bereavement groups and meals. The help page covers assistance with burial costs when a family cannot cover them. Harris County Community Services also lists a bereavement services program, worth asking about for Harris County residents. Veterans' organizations such as the VFW and the American Legion often take part in military honors; ask the funeral home or call the local post.

The obituaries in a refinery town read differently from most, if you read enough of them. Thirty-two years at the plant. Forty-one years at the plant. A Navy engine room, then the plant. The names of the units are in there like the names of ships. So are the church, the lodge and the youth league he coached. So are the daughter who's a nurse at the hospital and the grandson at Lee. It's a record of a place that made things and made a life around making them. It is written one family at a time in the Baytown Sun.

It may be the truest history the town has. If you're new here, read a month of them. You'll understand the stands at Stallworth and the counter at The Cuban Cafe better afterward.

Records

Death certificates are handled by where the person died. The funeral home files the certificate and usually orders the first certified copies. For more copies, a death inside Baytown city limits is handled by the City of Baytown at 2401 Market Street in the 77520 ZIP. The city's page lists $21 for the first copy and $4 for each additional copy, with no limit on copies. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with the last application at 5:00. Friday is 7:30 to 11:30 a.m., with the last application at 11:00. You need a valid state ID, and the city issues to the person or to close family such as a spouse, parent, sibling, child or grandparent. The city's page also lists a second set of hours, so confirm with City Hall before you drive over.

Deaths elsewhere in Harris County come from the Harris County Clerk at the same $21 and $4 fees. But the clerk's page says its records leave out several city limits. Those include Houston, Baytown, La Porte, South Houston and Jacinto City, plus two Justice of the Peace precincts (3 and 4). The clerk issues to immediate family with ID.

So confirm the office before you drive for a death in Highlands or Crosby. For a death in Chambers County, start with the Chambers County Clerk. Texas Vital Statistics also issues certified copies, and it calls ordering online through Texas.gov the fastest way. It also takes orders by mail and in person.

The library may keep older obituary indexes for genealogy; ask at the reference desk. The city-hall page has the clerks' offices.

Before you go

  • Call the funeral home first and ask for its general price list before you agree to anything.
  • Order extra certified death certificates at the start, since banks, insurers and agencies each ask for one.
  • Bring photo ID to the City Clerk's office, and check the Friday morning cutoff of 11:00 for last applications.
  • Send the obituary text to the Sun by noon the day before you want it to run, or ask the funeral home to do it.
  • For a veteran, ask about Houston National Cemetery burial eligibility early, because scheduling goes through the national cemetery scheduling office.

Questions people ask

  • Where are Baytown obituaries published? The Baytown Sun, and the funeral homes' own pages.
  • Mont Belvieu obituaries? The Sun and the Mont Belvieu funeral homes' sites.
  • How do I get a death certificate for a death in Baytown? From the City of Baytown at 2401 Market Street. The funeral home usually orders the first copies.
  • How do I get a death certificate in Harris County outside Baytown? From the Harris County Clerk for areas it covers, or from Texas Vital Statistics online.

If you're the one making the calls: the funeral home first, the death certificates second, and the church third, because the church will do the rest. If you're the neighbor: the casserole, the yard, the truck that needs moving. That's what the town does, and it does it well.
