Thanksgiving in Baytown

Thanksgiving here starts with a 5K in the cold and ends with a plant worker eating a plate at 2 a.m. because the refinery doesn't take the day off. Thursday, November 26, 2026 is the day itself, and the Turkey Trot is listed for Saturday, November 21.

What the day is, and who is off

Thanksgiving is a federal holiday. The federal Office of Personnel Management lists Thanksgiving Day for 2026 as Thursday, November 26. In Baytown the day also means a Turkey Trot on the Saturday before, a community dinner at the Baytown Community Center, family meals, and for plant families a meal built around a shift. Sterling Municipal Library is closed November 26 through 28, according to the library calendar, and trash collection runs as usual (details under trash and closures below).

The Turkey Trot

The city's Turkey Trot is the traditional Saturday-before-Thanksgiving morning out, organized through the City of Baytown's Parks and Recreation department. The city's events page lists the 2026 Turkey Trot for Saturday, November 21, with registration linked through its recreation portal, but it gives no start time, distances or place yet. Past trots started and finished at Jenkins Park, 4334 Crosby Cedar Bayou Rd, home of the Baytown Bark Park, which is open daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. In 2023 the kids' 1K started at 8 a.m. and the 5K at 9. In 2025 the trot ran Saturday, November 22, with a noon start at the Bark Park, registered through Race Roster. The city's recap of its October 8 council meeting also mentions Turkey Trot registration. Details to come: the 2026 place, start time and fee are not posted yet. Read the 2026 start time and course off the registration page when it posts. Watch the events board or the city's events page, and register early.

Where to get a free meal, or help serve one

Friends Feeding Friends is the community-wide Thanksgiving dinner served on Thanksgiving Day itself at the Baytown Community Center, which the city lists as the Baytown Community Building at 2407 Market St. Its roots go back decades to Marsha and Steve Burton, who started a Thanksgiving dinner for the community, and it is now run by local service clubs and volunteers — Rotary, Optimist, Lions and Kiwanis among them, with churches and businesses chipping in. In 2024 nearly 900 people were fed; the 2025 feast on November 27 reported about 1,200, with home deliveries and coats and blankets given away. The city has even proclaimed the day "Friends Feeding Friends Day." The Baytown Sun reported in July 2026 that a third annual feast is planned for Thanksgiving Day, but the 2026 place, time and volunteer sign-up aren't posted yet. Volunteer needs are listed on the United Way of Greater Baytown Area and Chambers County's volunteer page, so look there as November opens.

For food assistance any time of year, not just the holiday, Love Network of Baytown helps with food, utilities, rent, transportation, vital documents, prescriptions, hygiene products and other basics. Its office runs Monday through Thursday, with hours the site gives as 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (one listing shows mornings only, so go early in the day), and the way in is a phone call to schedule an interview; food pantry appointments don't need an application. Hearts and Hands of Baytown Food Pantry at 307 Cedar Bayou Rd is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., closed Monday and Thursday, so Thanksgiving Thursday itself is a closed day there. Church and pantry turkey giveaways are usually announced in early November and go on the events board; the free things guide collects the rest of the year's no-cost options.

Restaurants open Thanksgiving Day

Most restaurants post Thanksgiving hours only a few weeks out, so call the week of. The national chains were open on Thanksgiving last year: Cracker Barrel said it would keep normal hours, Waffle House says it is open every day including Thanksgiving, and IHOP and Denny's both opened, with hours varying by location. In Baytown that points to Cracker Barrel at 5173 Interstate 10 E, posted 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, and Waffle House at 7203 Garth Rd, posted open 24 hours. IHOP at 5001 Garth Rd and Denny's at 1876 East Fwy are both posted 24 hours. Confirm the location before you count on any of them; the same goes for Mont Belvieu, Highlands, Crosby, Beach City, Cove and Old River-Winfree, and the restaurants open late guide is the fallback for the night after a shift.

For a last-minute grocery run, H-E-B at 6430 Garth Rd posts 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. on ordinary days, but H-E-B's holiday hours page has listed a noon close on Thanksgiving Day, with pharmacies closed, so shop Wednesday for anything that matters.

Shift families

A refinery town doesn't get a holiday off, it gets a holiday with a schedule. Someone is running the units at the plant on Thanksgiving afternoon, and the dinner that matters is often the one held open for whoever gets off at 11 p.m. or comes in at 6 a.m. If your Thanksgiving has to move around a 12-hour shift, put the meal at whatever hour actually works.

Food drives

Canned-food and non-perishable drives run through churches, schools and Scout troops in the two weeks before Thanksgiving, mostly for Love Network of Baytown or a church's own pantry. The 2026 drop-off dates aren't posted yet; the events board is the place to watch.

The day after

The Baytown Nature Center at 6213 Bayway Dr is open daily except Christmas, Thanksgiving and extreme weather, so it is shut on Thursday and a decent walk-off-the-pie destination the day after, at $4 for adults. Sterling Municipal Library at 1 Mary Wilbanks Ave closed at 5 p.m. the Wednesday before Thanksgiving in 2025 and reopened the following Monday, and the library guide has its usual hours. Confirm the 2026 pattern on the city's calendar.

Trash, closures and fire rules

Trash does not skip the holiday. Best Trash's holiday schedule lists the City of Baytown for regular collection on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 26, with the Wednesday before and the Friday after also normal. The city has not posted 2026 office closures yet; last year offices closed the Thursday and Friday. The library calendar lists Sterling Municipal Library as closed November 26 through 28, and the Thursday Toddler Time is off the calendar. Baytown prohibits fireworks inside city limits, according to Chambers County's fireworks page. Burn bans have been in effect since September 17, 2026 in unincorporated Harris County and since September 24, 2026 in Chambers County. Backyard cookouts on equipment made for the purpose are allowed under the Harris order, but open fires are not, so ask the Baytown Fire Marshal what applies inside city limits and see the burn ban page. Bans like these can lift before the holiday, so check again the week of.

Cooking a safe Thanksgiving dinner

Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires, according to the federal Ready.gov holiday safety page, and most cooking fires start when frying food. Its tips for the cook: wear short sleeves or roll them up so they don't catch fire, turn pot handles toward the back of the stove so they can't be bumped or pulled over, and move dishtowels, bags, boxes, paper and curtains away from the stove. If the oven catches fire, turn it off and keep the door closed until it cools. The Baytown Fire Marshal's Office teaches a Holiday Cooking Safety talk for groups that covers kitchen cooking during the holidays and outdoor turkey frying, and groups can ask the Baytown Fire Department to schedule it. A working smoke alarm matters most on a day like this, and the city runs a free smoke detector program.

For the turkey itself, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says to cook it to a safe internal temperature of 165°F, checked with a food thermometer in three places, away from bone, including the thickest part of the breast. Stuffing should also reach 165°F in the center, and the CDC says it is safest cooked in a separate casserole dish. Thaw the turkey in the refrigerator, allowing about 24 hours for each 4 to 5 pounds, or in cold water, allowing about 30 minutes for each pound and changing the water every 30 minutes, and cook it right after a cold-water or microwave thaw. Never leave it to thaw on the counter, because a turkey that sits at room temperature for more than 2 hours becomes unsafe. The CDC also advises not washing a raw turkey, which federal agencies have recommended since 2005, and washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before and after you handle it.

Put leftovers in the refrigerator at 40°F or colder within 2 hours of cooking, or within 1 hour if the food was exposed to temperatures above 90°F, such as in a hot car. Eat cooked turkey and dishes made from it within 3 to 4 days, freeze what you won't eat by then, and reheat leftovers to at least 165°F.

The weather, and what it means for the trot

The National Weather Service's 30-year average for late November at Houston's Bush Intercontinental Airport puts the normal high near 69°F and the normal low near 48°F on Thanksgiving week, which is a jacket at a sunrise start line and warm by the time the pans come out of the oven. Baytown, closer to the bay, runs a touch milder. Check the weather page the morning of, since a strong cold front can put the trot morning in the 40s.

Before you go

Wait for the registration page before you plan the Trot morning; the start time and course aren't posted. Call the specific Baytown restaurant before counting on it, because holiday hours differ by location even when the chain is open. Do your grocery shopping by Wednesday, since H-E-B has closed at noon on Thanksgiving Day. If you need food help, reach Love Network of Baytown on a Monday through Thursday morning, and remember Hearts and Hands is closed Thursday.

Comida gratis o cómo ayudar a servirla
