Baytown Is Younger Than It Looks: 27.6% of Residents Are Under 18

Age structure affects the mix of schools, recreation, library use and services a city has to plan for.

More than one in four Baytown residents is under 18. The Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey (the 5-year estimate) puts the under-18 share at 27.6%. Residents 65 and older make up 11.7%. The young group is more than twice the size of the older one, and you see it in school pickup lines, at the splash parks in summer and at the library after the last bell. It is a young town by that measure, and it is still growing.

The short version

  • 27.6% of Baytown residents are under 18 (2020-2024 Census survey).
  • 11.7% are 65 or older, which leaves 60.7% between 18 and 64.
  • The Census Bureau's 2025 estimate is 86,561 residents, up from 83,701 in 2020.
  • The 2020-2024 Census survey estimates 30,964 households, with about 2.73 people per household.
  • Goose Creek CISD counted 23,308 students in 2026.

What the age numbers show

The three age groups add up to the whole. If 27.6% are under 18 and 11.7% are 65 or older, then 60.7% are in between. That middle group is working adults, parents, college students and people nearing retirement. Many of them are the ones packing the lunches and driving to practice.

Divide 27.6 by 11.7 and you get about 2.4. That is roughly 2.4 people under 18 for every resident 65 or older.

These are shares, not head counts. The age shares come from the 2020-2024 survey and the 86,561 figure is a 2025 estimate, so don't multiply one by the other and call the result an exact number of kids.

Growth over time

Baytown had 20,958 residents when it was established in 1948. By the 2000 census it had 66,430, more than triple the 1948 figure. The 2020 census counted 83,701. The 2025 estimate is 86,561.

From 2020 to 2025 the city added 2,860 people, or about 3.4%. It is steady growth, not a boom.

Kids in school

Goose Creek CISD counted 23,308 students in 2026, according to the Texas Education Agency. The 2025 sheet showed 23,943, so the 2026 count is 635 lower. The state file does not say why.

School sizes vary a lot. Sterling High School had 2,174 students, Goose Creek Memorial had 2,110 and Lee High School had 1,742 in the 2026 file. The district earned an overall B (score 80) for 2026, up from a C (78). Our campus-by-campus look is in the Goose Creek CISD 2026 report card story.

The district has deep roots here. Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District took its current shape in 1954, when the old Goose Creek ISD merged with Cedar Bayou ISD. Voters approved separating Lee College from the public school system on August 9, 1965, by more than two to one. Both are reminders that this town has been building for its kids for a long time.

Where families play and read

Parks matter more when more than a quarter of residents are children. The city says it maintains more than 50 parks, and its Baytown Trails page says Baytown has more than 20 miles of trails. Six splash parks are open from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm during Daylight Saving Time.

The Sterling Municipal Library, at 1 Mary Wilbanks Avenue, is the city's single main branch. It is open Monday through Thursday, 10 am to 8 pm, and Friday and Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm.

A mixed community

Age is one part of the picture. In the 2020-2024 survey, 41.8% of residents speak a language other than English at home. About one in five Baytown residents was born outside the United States, according to Census Bureau population estimates. The median household income is $59,910 and the poverty rate is 18.2%.

The other end of the scale

The 11.7% who are 65 or older are a smaller share, but they use the same roads, parks and library. A town with this age mix has to serve both ends at once: school buildings and playgrounds for the young, and accessible streets and services for older neighbors. The Census table does not break services down by age, so check with the city and your own neighbors on what is available near you.

What this means for you

If you are a parent, look at your child's campus score as well as its letter. If you own a business, a young population means a lot of customers who are growing up in town. If you vote, the age mix is a reason to read how bond packages and budgets treat schools, parks and streets, since all three touch a town where more than a quarter of the people are under 18.
