Language-at-home data is a reminder that public communication and daily life reach beyond an English-only picture of the city.

Listen to Baytown at home and the city sounds more multilingual than an English-only map would suggest.

In the 2020-2024 Census survey, 41.8% of Baytown residents age 5 and older spoke a language other than English at home. That is more than four in every ten people, or about 42 of every 100. The number comes from the Census Bureau's American Community Survey for 2020 through 2024.

The Census table that breaks the 41.8% down by language was not available for this page. A separate data profile for the Baytown area, built on 2024 survey data, finds Spanish is the most common language other than English by a wide margin: about 39.9% of households in the Baytown City area, with French (including Cajun) and Vietnamese each well under 1%. That area is a Census statistical zone, not the exact city limit, so read it as a guide, not a count.

The short version

  • 41.8% of Baytown residents age 5 and older spoke a language other than English at home, in the 2020-2024 Census survey.
  • Spanish is by far the most common of those languages, per a 2024 data profile of the Baytown area.
  • About one in five Baytown residents was born outside the United States (20.7% in 2020-2024, per Census QuickFacts).
  • The Census Bureau estimates Baytown's population at 86,561 on July 1, 2025, up from 83,701 in the 2020 census.
  • The 2020-2024 survey counts 30,964 households. The median household income is $59,910 in 2024 dollars.

What the 41.8% counts

The measure is "language other than English spoken at home, percent of persons age 5 years+." It is a survey result for 2020 through 2024, not a head count on one day. It counts people, not households, so each person is counted on their own.

The 41.8% covers all languages other than English together. It does not say that those residents do not speak English, only that another language is spoken at home. It does not say how well people speak English, or how many speak any one language.

Three kinds of numbers appear on this page. The 2020 figure is a census count taken on April 1, 2020. The 86,561 figure is an estimate for July 1, 2025. The language figure is a survey result averaged over 2020 through 2024. Each is fine for a picture of the town. The change in population between 2020 and 2025 is a fair comparison of two population counts. Do not use the language figure to measure a change in language use.

Who lives here

The same 2020-2024 survey gives a picture of the households: - 30,964 households. - 27.6% of residents are under 18. - 11.7% are 65 or older. - 52.3% of housing units are owner-occupied. - The median value of an owner-occupied home is $197,300. - Mean travel time to work is 25.4 minutes. - 18.2% of residents are in poverty.

With more than a quarter of residents under 18, the numbers describe a town with many children.

Born abroad

Census QuickFacts puts the foreign-born share of Baytown at 20.7% for 2020-2024, about one in five. That is a different measure from language spoken at home. A person can be born in the United States and speak another language at home, and a person born abroad may speak English at home.

Income and the cost of living

The median household income for 2020-2024 is $59,910, in 2024 dollars. The median value of an owner-occupied home is $197,300, and the median year a home was built is 1981.

Why a survey number needs care

The American Community Survey is a sample. Its five-year numbers average over 2020 through 2024, so they describe those years together. A single year can differ. Survey figures also carry a margin of error. The Census Bureau lists one for the median year homes were built in Baytown: 1981, plus or minus 2 years. Even a single number comes with a range.

How the town has changed

Baytown had 20,958 residents when it was established in 1948 and 66,430 by the 2000 census. The 2020 census counted 83,701. The July 1, 2025 estimate of 86,561 is 2,860 more than the 2020 count, a rise of about 3.4%.

The Goose Creek school district reported 23,308 students in the Texas Education Agency's 2026 state summary, down from 23,943 on the 2025 sheet. Those numbers show the scale of the district that serves many Baytown children. They do not say which languages those students speak at home, so they tell you nothing about the 41.8%.

What this means for you

If you run a club, a business or a school group, plan for more than one language. Ask who in your audience reads English comfortably and who prefers another language, then offer the key facts both ways. If you work with the city, ask which notices come in more than one language. Treat the 41.8% as a doorway into the city, not a label for any one language or neighborhood.
