Can I keep chickens or goats in Baytown?
Short answer: Up to six hens, no roosters, and the coop has to be at least 200 feet from a residential structure. Goats and other livestock can't be kept within 200 feet of a home you have no right to live in. Pigs are banned, with narrow exceptions.

Chickens
The city allows "six or fewer chickens, excluding roosters," kept in a pen, coop, shed, enclosed structure or fenced yard that is:
1. "Located at least 200 feet from a residential structure," and 2. kept so it doesn't give off odors that would bother an ordinary neighbor, doesn't breed or attract flies, mosquitoes, other pests or rodents, and doesn't endanger public health or safety.
The catch is the measuring. The rule says 200 feet from "a residential structure" and doesn't say "someone else's." The published text doesn't settle whether your own house counts. If it does, a coop has to sit 200 feet from every house including yours, and that won't fit on most ordinary city lots. If it means only a neighbor's house, a lot with room along the back fence may work.
Before you buy hens, ask Baytown Animal Services how the city measures, from which wall of the coop to which wall of the house, and ask for the answer in writing. Keep it with your records. Then walk it off with a tape or a measuring app.
Roosters aren't covered by the chicken exception, so they fall under the general rule for fowl below.
Rule: City Code Sec. 14-8(c)(6).
Goats, horses, other livestock and fowl
It's illegal to keep livestock, rabbits or fowl within 200 feet of a private residence you have no right to live in, or livestock or fowl within 300 feet of a church, school, hospital or a public place where food is sold or eaten. "Livestock" means any grazing animal, including cattle, horses, mules, donkeys and burros, pigs, sheep and goats; "fowl" means any bird, domestic or wild. On a typical city lot, that rules them out. (Sec. 14-8(a); definitions in Sec. 14-1.)
Pigs, wild animals and bees
- Hogs, swine and pigs are banned inside the city limits, with narrow exceptions, such as animals held for sale within 24 hours (Sec. 14-8).
- Wild animals are banned, with limited exceptions such as zoos, circuses and licensed wildlife rehabilitation (Sec. 14-8).
- Beehives can't be within 300 feet of a private residence you have no right to live in, or of a church, school, day care, nursing home, hospital, park or public place (Sec. 14-8(a)(6)).
Any animal pen has to be kept clean and free of offensive odor or dust (Sec. 14-10).
What happens if you don't
A fine of up to $500, or up to $2,000 if treated as a public health violation, with each day a new offense (Sec. 14-3 and Sec. 1-14).

Cabras, caballos, otro ganado y aves
Cerdos, animales silvestres y abejas
Si no cumple
