Beyond Tex-Mex: the rest of the world in Baytown

Baytown's food map gets much more interesting once you stop asking only for Tex-Mex. Vietnamese, Chinese, Cuban, Salvadoran, Middle Eastern, Caribbean, Thai, Indian, Japanese and Cajun kitchens are all part of the everyday rotation. The plants brought people from everywhere, and some of them opened restaurants.

Use this guide well

- Use this list when the group says anything but Tex-Mex. - Start with the dish the kitchen is known for. - Do not order around the edges of a menu on the first visit. - Ask about lunch specials when you are there midday. - For a very early meal, the Cuban option changes the map. - Small independent kitchens may close one day that chains do not. - For sushi, Thai or Indian, plan the meal rather than treating it as a fallback. - The point is range: Baytown eats far beyond one regional category.

The fuller guide

The plants brought people from everywhere, and some of them opened restaurants. That is how a refinery town ends up with a good bowl of pho and a proper pupusa. This is the list for the night you don't want tacos.

Vietnamese

Pho Em at 4507 Garth Rd, Suite C, is the pho stop, open Monday to Saturday from 10 to 9 and closed Sunday. Pho House Vietnamese Cuisine at 10424 Interstate 10 East is the other one, open 11 to 9 Monday through Saturday and noon to 7 on Sunday, a better fit if you're already out on the I-10 side. Black Bayou at 1930 Garth Rd is the Viet-Cajun hybrid the Gulf Coast invented and Baytown adopted: garlic-butter crawfish in season, a shrimp po-boy the rest of the year, and beignets after. It has the season's argument in the crawfish guide. Check its ordering page for hours.

Chinese

888 Chinese Restaurant at 4567 Garth Rd, Suite 400, is the town's standby: combination plates, walnut shrimp, hot tea, a dining room that has been feeding the same tables for years. It opens at 10:30 every day and closes at 9:30 Sunday through Thursday and 10:30 on Friday and Saturday. The lunch special is where the value is. Noodle Master at 4539 Garth Rd, Suite 210A, is not a pho house. It's Northern Chinese, with hand-made noodles, dumplings and bao, and the beef noodle soup is the place to start. It is open 11 to 9 daily and hides behind the bigger signs in the strip. Dumpling Time at 8804 N Highway 146, Suite 100, is the newer one: made-to-order dumplings and bao, the pork bao and the pan-fried dumplings, open 10:45 to 9 Sunday through Thursday and 9:30 on Friday and Saturday.

Middle Eastern

Shawarma In Town at 407 W Baker Rd, Unit V: the chicken shawarma wrap with extra garlic, halal, with outdoor seating. Closing time is disputed between eight and nine, and Sunday it closes earlier, so go at seven and it doesn't matter.

Cuban

!Cuban sandwich press

The Cuban Cafe, 4232 Decker, which you've read about on every other list. The Cuban sandwich, the café con leche, the ropa vieja, four in the morning on weekdays and open until seven at night. It's on the 4 a.m. map for a reason.

Salvadoran

Pupuseria El Rey, 5622 Garth Rd, the shop that goes by El Rey Pupusas Tacos y Mas. Order the revuelta and the loroco pupusas, take extra curtido, and add a baleada if you want Honduras in the same sitting. Monday to Thursday from 8 to 8, Friday and Sunday from 8 to 6, and closed Saturday, which is the fact people miss. Two pupusas is a meal; three is a nap.

Latin and Caribbean

Mambo Seafood at 4300 East Freeway is a Houston-born seafood house with a Latin menu: the famous Mambo rice, a mariscada for the table, tostones on the side. It works best for a group, and it's open 11 to 9:30 Sunday through Thursday and until 10 on Friday and Saturday. Asha's Roti Shop, 1000 N Alexander Dr, is the Caribbean roti counter, open Tuesday to Saturday from 11 to 7 and closed Sunday and Monday.

Thai and Indian

These are the smaller categories here, with one anchor each. Nara Thai Dining at 4505 Garth Rd is the Thai room: pad kra pao, tom kha and mango sticky rice, so say how hot you want it. It's open 11 to 9 Sunday through Thursday and 11 to 9:30 on Friday and Saturday, and parking is in the Willowcreek Shopping Center lot. Rice Bowl of India at 4919 N Main St is the Indian option, with a house special chicken curry. It's closed Monday, and open from 10 in the morning the rest of the week, closing around nine.

Japanese and sushi

The Garth corridor has the hibachi-and-sushi options every town has, and Baytown has an actual sushi bar too. Wazabi at 206 W Texas Ave, a block off Town Square, is evenings only, Tuesday to Saturday from 5 to 10. The order is the spicy tuna nachos and then whatever the chef suggests. Sit at the bar. There's street parking on Texas Avenue and the Town Square lot after six. For a quicker roll, Sushi Go at 4531 Garth Rd, Suite 110, posts Monday to Saturday from 10:30 to 9, and Mizuki at 4710 East Freeway does sushi and hibachi with all-you-can-eat sushi on the menu, open 11 to 9:30 Sunday through Thursday and until 10:30 on Friday and Saturday.

Cajun

Beyond Black Bayou, the boils come with crawfish season. The boudin is the other reason Louisiana people cross the state line: Devillier's Boudin at 715 S Main in Highlands opens at 9 on weekdays and Saturday and 10 on Sunday, and Doughnut Wheel on Garth sells a boudin kolache at dawn.

The rule

Ask about the lunch special, especially at 888 Chinese, where it's the value on the menu. Ask what they'd eat and order that.

Start with a bowl of beef noodle soup at Noodle Master at a quarter past eleven, before the crews come in. Then work down the list, one country a week. It takes a couple of months and you'll know the town better at the end of it.

Before you go

- Mind the closed days: Pupuseria El Rey is closed Saturday, Pho Em is closed Sunday, Rice Bowl of India is closed Monday, Wazabi is closed Sunday and Monday, and Asha's Roti Shop is closed Sunday and Monday. - Several of these are in the 4500 block of Garth Road, in strip-center lots with easy parking: Nara Thai, Pho Em, Noodle Master, Sushi Go and 888 Chinese. - Wazabi and Nara Thai keep evening kitchens that wind down by 9:30 to 10, so don't arrive at closing. - For a table of six or more, Mambo Seafood and Dumpling Time are the ones built for a crowd. - Hours for Asha's Roti Shop, Sushi Go and Shawarma In Town come from directories rather than a posted sign, so call before a long drive.
