About ten minutes up Highway 146 from Baytown, Mont Belvieu is a major center for natural-gas-liquids storage and fractionation. The jobs look familiar to plant workers: operators, instrument and electrical technicians, maintenance, loading, pipeline work and engineering.
The short version
- Energy Transfer, Enterprise Products and Targa Resources all operate major facilities around the hub.
- Operator and technician jobs use many of the same skills as Baytown's chemical plants.
- Lee College Process Technology, instrumentation and electrical programs line up with common hub roles.
Why it matters here
Mont Belvieu is close enough to Baytown that the hub is part of the same labor market, even though the city line changes. The work is built around natural-gas liquids, or NGLs, that arrive by pipeline and are separated into products such as ethane, propane, normal butane, isobutane and natural gasoline. The salt dome below Mont Belvieu makes large underground storage possible, which is one reason so much Gulf Coast NGL infrastructure gathered there.
The scale is hard to see from one road. Energy Transfer's March 2026 fact sheet lists eight fractionators with more than one million barrels per day of capacity, more than 62 million barrels of storage and connections to more than 80 petrochemical plants, refineries, fractionators and third-party pipelines. It also says a ninth fractionator is under construction for planned service in the fourth quarter of 2026. Enterprise's history shows its Mont Belvieu pipeline work beginning in 1972 and a storage-and-pipeline complex completed in 1979. Targa says its Mont Belvieu operation now includes nine wholly owned fractionation trains plus another joint-venture train.
Locals know the view: tank fields, pipe racks, towers, flares and the steady traffic up Highway 146. The jobs behind that view are familiar to Baytown plant families. Operators watch process conditions. Instrument and electrical technicians keep controls and power reliable. Mechanical crews maintain equipment. Pipeline and loading workers move product safely between storage, processing and transportation systems.
For a Baytown worker, Mont Belvieu matters because it multiplies the number of gates worth applying to. A Process Technology, instrumentation or electrical credential is not tied to one refinery. The same industrial habits—procedure, communication, shift discipline and safe work—travel across the hub.
What the hub actually does
Natural gas liquids arrive by pipeline and are separated, or fractionated, into products such as ethane, propane, butane, isobutane and natural gasoline. Much of that product is stored in caverns built inside the salt dome below Mont Belvieu.
From there, pipelines, trucks and rail move it to chemical plants, refineries and other customers. The hub is part storage field, part processing center and part traffic interchange for molecules.
The jobs are operator and technician jobs, and a lot of Baytown's newer houses were bought on them.
Another operates a complex that has produced propylene, MTBE and isobutylene since the mid-1990s. ## Three companies explain much of the map Energy Transfer says its Mont Belvieu system has eight fractionators with more than one million barrels a day of capacity and about 62 million barrels of storage. It also connects to more than 80 petrochemical plants, refineries, fractionators and third-party pipelines. A ninth fractionator is under construction.
Enterprise Products has Mont Belvieu roots going back to 1979, when it completed a storage and pipeline complex there. It added major propylene interests in the 1990s and has continued expanding its NGL and petrochemical network.
Targa Resources also operates fractionation and storage assets around the hub. Site-specific employee counts are not consistently published, so this page does not invent them.
The companies don't publish site employee counts on the pages we reviewed, so we don't print them. ## What they hire Common jobs include plant and control-room operators, instrument and electrical technicians, mechanical maintenance, pipeline and terminal operators, truck and rail loading, engineers and office staff.
The operator's day shows the kind of attention and shift work an operations role can require. The actual schedule belongs to the posting; do not assume every company uses the same rotation.
How people get in
- Apply to each company separately. The employer table links the companies HERE tracks.
- Match the credential to the role. Process Technology, Instrumentation Technology and Electrical Technology at Lee College connect to common operations and technician jobs.
- Contractors matter here too. Expansion and maintenance work brings in craft and specialty contractors.
- Safety training follows the assignment. ISTC, the Industrial Safety Training Council on Decker Drive, is one local provider of contractor safety training and site orientations.
The Mont Belvieu guide covers the town itself.
- The commute is the selling point:
Mont Belvieu's own guide covers the town, and the operator household in the new-build with the yard is the local shorthand for what these jobs pay for. ## Who this work can fit The hub fits someone who wants industrial operations without assuming Baytown's refinery gates are the only option. It is especially relevant for workers living around Barbers Hill who want a shorter drive.
If you are finishing Process Technology at Lee, do not apply to only one company. The same preparation can match several employers around the salt dome.
