Houston Methodist Baytown is a 275-bed hospital at 4401 Garth Road, and it hires every week of the year: nurses, technicians, support workers and office staff. It is a big employer in town that doesn't make anything. The system also offers routes from entry support work into licensed healthcare careers through education and training.

The short version

  • Nursing is a major hiring line, but the hospital also needs many non-nursing workers.
  • The Baytown campus participates in Houston Methodist's graduate nurse residency.
  • Eligible employees can receive education assistance for job-related college work.
  • Apply to the Baytown campus specifically. Postings say which building.

Why it matters here

The hospital opened on April 18, 1948, as San Jacinto Memorial Hospital with fewer than 100 rooms and 35 physicians. It became part of Houston Methodist in 1983 and took the Houston Methodist Baytown Hospital name in 2018. A five-story Unity Tower opened in November 2022 as part of a $250 million expansion.

The operation is much larger now. Houston Methodist's 2025 statistics list 275 operating beds, 14 operating rooms, 936 affiliated physicians and 1,969 employees at the Baytown hospital. The same report lists 15,370 admissions, 220,297 outpatient visits, 77,353 emergency-room visits and 1,766 births for the year. That last number is a lot of Baytown's birth certificates.

Those numbers explain why the hospital is not one workforce. Nurses and physicians are the obvious clinical jobs, but the hospital also needs imaging, laboratory, respiratory care, pharmacy, sterile processing, patient transport, food service, environmental services, facilities, security, scheduling, registration, billing, information technology and management. A patient may see only a few people during a visit. Dozens of other jobs support the same care behind the scenes.

The campus includes the emergency department, surgery, labor and delivery, inpatient floors and outpatient services, so there are bedside jobs and non-bedside jobs under one roof.

You enter the Garth Road campus on an ordinary appointment day or on the worst day of a family's year. The work is rewarding, and it is hard. Hospital jobs run through nights, weekends, holidays and emergencies. Some roles take years of licensing and school. Others are realistic first steps into health care.

For Baytown, the hospital matters because care stays closer to home and because nearly two thousand people work there. A hospital paycheck can be a long career. The work asks for accuracy, stamina and calm when somebody else may be frightened or hurting.

What they hire

Registered nurses are a major line. The hospital also hires licensed vocational nurses, nursing assistants and patient-care staff.

Allied-health jobs include respiratory care, imaging, laboratory, pharmacy and rehabilitation. Support jobs include patient transport, food service, environmental services and security. Scheduling, billing and administration keep another side of the campus running.

How nurses get in

A registered nurse needs the required nursing degree and Texas license or permit. An associate or bachelor's degree plus the state license is the usual path. Lee College is the local community-college route.

Houston Methodist's graduate nurse residency includes the Baytown campus. The system says applicants generally need less than six months of licensed nursing experience. The program is meant to bridge school and independent hospital practice.

The nurse's day explains what a long bedside shift actually asks of you.

The ladder from the bottom looks like this. Patient transport, dietary or environmental services need an application and a background check. A nurse-aide certificate typically takes weeks, an LVN program about a year, and an associate degree in nursing about two. The hospital helps pay for the steps through education assistance. It is a well-used route to a nursing badge for people who didn't start at eighteen.

Lee's phlebotomy, EKG and clinical medical assistant certificates lead into hospital work directly.

Expect a background check, immunizations, and a schedule with nights and weekends in it until seniority takes them out.

There are doors below the licensed jobs

Patient transport, dietary, environmental services and other support roles have different entry requirements from nursing. A worker can start in the hospital while deciding whether healthcare training is worth the next step.

Houston Methodist says regular employees scheduled at least 20 hours a week can be eligible for its benefits program, with part-time and full-time differences. Its education-assistance program can cover eligible job-related undergraduate, graduate and doctoral coursework through direct or reimbursement options.

Who this work can fit

Hospital work fits people who want steadier demand than project-based industrial work and can accept nights, weekends or holidays when the role requires them. It also fits someone willing to start in support work and build credentials over time.

The important question is not "hospital or no hospital." It is which rung matches your training today.

The hospital is the one employer in Baytown whose hiring doesn't follow the turnaround calendar. If you need a job that's there in the quiet months, start with its support roles and let it pay for the rest.
