H-E-B Baytown, as an employer

The short version
- H-E-B hires cashiers, baggers, stockers, curbside shoppers, food departments and pharmacy support.
- The company starts some store roles at 16; most other roles require applicants to be 18.
- Some store applicants complete a HireVue video interview before the final interview.
Why it matters here
H-E-B on Garth Road is the kind of employer that touches Baytown in ordinary ways: groceries after work, prescriptions, curbside pickup, fuel and a paycheck. The current store opened on December 6, 2017, at 6430 Garth Road. A Texas accessibility project record describes the build as a new 100,000-square-foot grocery store. H-E-B's current store page identifies it as corporate store No. 742 and lists a pharmacy, business center, car wash, fuel, curbside and delivery.
That mix creates more kinds of work than a front-end view suggests. Cashiers and baggers are only one part. Grocery, produce, meat, bakery, deli and overnight stocking all have different routines. Curbside adds order picking, staging and vehicle handoff. Pharmacy work has its own licensing and supervision requirements. Fuel and facility work happen outside the main sales floor.
The store opened in 2017 near San Jacinto Mall, an opening ABC13 called long-awaited. H-E-B had been in talks in 2015 to anchor the mall itself. The mall closed in January 2020 and has since been torn down for the San Jacinto Marketplace redevelopment. Today it sits on the Garth Road shopping corridor near Hunt Road, so a shift there is tied directly to the same traffic and weekend rushes residents experience as customers.
The work is physical and public. Many roles mean hours on your feet, lifting, cleaning, cold rooms, hot food areas or constant customer contact. Early mornings, evenings and weekends are normal parts of grocery work. For a worker who wants to start without a four-year degree, the store offers several entry doors and a path toward department leadership. For Baytown, it is also a local example of how a single grocery store becomes a small employment system of its own.

How hiring works
- Start online. Search the careers site by location and choose the Baytown store.
- Know the age minimum. H-E-B lists 16 for Curbies, Shoppers, Baggers and Checkers. All other positions require 18; driving roles require 21.
- Expect a video step in some jobs. The company's candidate guide says some full- and part-time applicants complete a HireVue video interview before final interviews or assessments.
- Talk about availability clearly. If your household works rotating plant shifts, explain the hours you can actually keep rather than promising open availability.
- Look beyond the first job. Store departments have lead and management roles. The floor-to-manager day shows what the added responsibility feels like.
The company's own pay is on each posting.
Who this job can fit
H-E-B can fit a teenager starting work, an adult who needs part-time hours, or someone who wants to build a store career. The right department matters as much as the company name.
Ask about the schedule, expected weekly hours and benefit eligibility for the specific position before accepting. Those details can differ by role and status.
