Careers page

Covestro's Baytown site is its largest manufacturing facility in North America and its third largest globally, with more than 1,000 employees. Operators and technicians are the core direct jobs. Another large route runs through about 750 on-site contractors, which the company calls nested contractors.

The site has been here for generations

The company acquired the 1,700-acre Baytown site in 1970 and began operations in 1971. The site marked fifty years of operation on the company's own pages. It operated under earlier company names, including Bayer, before the business was spun out and took the Covestro name in 2015. A lot of people still call it Bayer.

What they make

The plant makes raw materials for polyurethanes and polycarbonates, plus other specialty chemicals. That's the chemistry inside car seats and bumpers, insulation foam, furniture cushions, coatings, adhesives, electronics housings and other durable plastics.

That mix requires continuous operations, labs, maintenance and utilities.

What they hire

Direct roles include operators, instrument and electrical technicians, mechanical maintenance, lab and quality work, engineers, logistics and office jobs. The employer list points to live openings, and the plant's own listings are on the company's careers site.

The company says the site also has about 750 nested contractors. Those contractor crews support maintenance, construction and specialty work inside the site, and, as at every plant here, they and the turnaround crews are the wide door.

How people get in

  • Operator route. Process Technology from Lee College is one local path toward operating work, and it's a two-year credential. The operator's day shows the shift from the inside.
  • Technical route. Instrumentation, electrical and industrial maintenance training can lead toward technician roles.
  • Contractor route. Maintenance and project contractors create another way to build site experience. The safety-council card from ISTC on Decker Drive is the first step for those.
  • Direct route. Covestro lists company jobs on its own careers site; qualifications vary by posting.

Who this work can fit

The direct jobs fit people looking for a long plant career and willing to train for a technical role. Contractor work can fit experienced craft workers who prefer maintenance, project or turnaround assignments.

Choose the posting that matches the credential and work you want. The name on the badge matters less than the credential that gets you the badge, and for operator work that credential is two years away at Lee. More than a thousand people work behind a fence that many drivers pass without knowing the name changed.
