What they are

Cove is tiny: 525 residents at the 2020 census, on the west side of Old River Lake, an arm of the Trinity River. It incorporated in 1973. The City of Cove's City Hall is at 7911 Cove Loop, and directories disagree about who holds the mayor's seat, so ask City Hall rather than trusting any one listing. Old River-Winfree, a few miles north, is bigger at 1,315 residents in 2020, and incorporated later, in 1979, following the petrochemical development that spread through the area in the 1960s and 1970s. A small piece of it reaches into Liberty County.

The water and the name

Old River is a marshy stream that rises near Dayton, runs about twenty-two miles south and reaches the Trinity River in Chambers County. Cove was once called Winfree's Cove, after the pioneer settler A. B. J. Winfree, and its first businesses were a cotton gin in 1871, then a shipyard and a sawmill. I-10 arrived much later and turned the crossing into what it is now: a highway exit with a lake behind it.

Where it is

Exit 803 on I-10 is the way into Cove, and South FM 565 south of the interstate is the local spine, with the Cove Community Building and Cove Fire & Rescue sharing a lot at 5735 and the RV parks strung along it. FM 565 runs north into Old River-Winfree, where FM 1409 branches off, and Mont Belvieu is the next town west on the interstate. Cove's ZIP is 77523, shared with Mont Belvieu. Living here

This is acreage and lake-house country, not a subdivision. The appeal is quiet and water; the tradeoff is a longer drive for everything that isn't a gas station. I-10 makes Houston, 35 miles west, and Beaumont, 49 miles east, both reachable, and Mont Belvieu is fifteen minutes west for groceries, schools and a Friday dinner.

Parks and things to do

Hugo Point Park, at the end of Gou Hole Road about 1.7 miles off FM 565, has a boat ramp and a view over Old River Lake and the brackish marsh. The listing gives hours of 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily and shows no facilities. The ramp takes kayaks and canoes as well as boats; the paddling guide has the life-jacket rules. The Mouth of the Trinity River Waterbird Rookery is a birding stop just east of the Trinity River and south of I-10, reached from exit 807 by the service road and a U-turn under the river bridge; it has a parking lot.

Where to eat and gas

The strip of South FM 565 south of the interstate is the commercial center for both towns, such as it is. Cove Country Store, at 6013 South FM 565, is the older, local version of a convenience store, open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. most days and later on Friday and Saturday. Casa Grace Coffee Co., at 4600 South FM 565, does breakfast tacos, croissants and coffee, Tuesday to Friday from 6:30 to 1 and Saturday from 8 to 1, closed Sunday and Monday.

Cove Food Park, at the same address as Casa Grace, is a lot of food trucks, each on its own schedule. Jamaica's Hot Pot, at 4600 FM 565, is listed open Saturday from noon to 8 only. In Old River-Winfree there is a Dollar General at 4940 North FM 565, open daily from 8 to 10. For anything more than that, it's Mont Belvieu or Baytown.

Weather

Neither town keeps a weather station worth citing, so use the region's forecast and treat Old River and Old River Lake the way you'd treat any Chambers County waterway after a heavy rain: they rise, and the low crossings near the water flood before the highway does.

Schools

Cove is in Barbers Hill ISD, the district based in Mont Belvieu, and so is the Chambers County part of Old River-Winfree; the Liberty County sliver is zoned to Dayton ISD. Barbers Hill ISD is the same district drawing families to Mont Belvieu itself and to parts of Beach City, and the Texas Education Agency rates it A (93) for 2026. Campus ratings and zones are not in our verified data, so confirm the zone with the district.

Practical notes

City Hall is open on weekdays from 9 to 5, and the council meets on the first Thursday evening of the month. Flood risk is an address question near the lake: check the FEMA flood map for the lot and ask for an elevation certificate. A 100-year flood is a 1 percent chance in any year, which the Harris County Flood Control District puts at 26 percent over a 30-year mortgage. Cove, Old River-Winfree and Mont Belvieu

Both towns are Mont Belvieu's quiet edge, close enough to share its school district and its petrochemical jobs, far enough to keep their own small governments. Neither has much of a downtown; Mont Belvieu does the rest.
