Finding a lawyer in Baytown (including free help)

You don't have to already know a lawyer to get real help. Baytown residents can reach free legal aid, a referral service, a law library, or a public defender depending on the case and what you can afford. Each organization's own site has its current contact details, so this page points to the sites.

Free and low-cost help

Lone Star Legal Aid (lonestarlegal.org) handles civil cases such as housing and eviction defense, family law, consumer issues, employment, public benefits, disaster relief and matters for veterans, seniors and domestic violence survivors, for people who meet its financial and legal-status requirements. It does not handle criminal cases. You apply through the online form on its site, and the site sends you to the office that serves your county.

Houston Volunteer Lawyers (legalhelphouston.org) offers free legal help to eligible low-income residents of the Greater Houston area, mostly on civil matters. Start there for its intake questionnaire.

LegalLine, run by the Houston Bar Association with Houston Volunteer Lawyers, is a free legal hotline that the Harris County Law Library lists as running on the first and third Wednesday of each month. Volunteer attorneys give legal advice and information in a single consultation of roughly 20 to 30 minutes; it is advice, not a case pickup, and it is aimed at people without the money to hire a lawyer.

The Houston Lawyer Referral Service (hlrs.org) is not free legal aid. It refers you to private attorneys, over 200 of them screened and selected on experience in specific areas of law, and it offers Spanish-language resources. It is a fast way to find a lawyer if you don't qualify for legal aid. Ask what the first consultation costs before you book it, and remember you are not obligated to hire the attorney.

Harris County has a public defender's office that represents people in criminal cases who can't afford a lawyer. You don't sign up with them directly; the appointment happens through the court, usually at your first appearance, after a financial screening. If your case is in Chambers County, the court appoints counsel under the county's indigent defense plan. Ask the judge or the court coordinator at your first setting; the appointment is based on a financial screening, the same as in Harris County.

The Harris County Robert W. Hainsworth Law Library, 1019 Congress Street, 1st floor, Houston, is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and serves self-represented litigants as well as lawyers. Librarians can help you find forms and point you to legal aid and referral services, though they cannot give legal advice. Chambers County doesn't run a separate law library; the Chambers County Library System's Anahuac branch is a public library, not a legal research center. A lawyer can do more in twenty minutes with your paperwork in hand than in an hour without it.

TexasLawHelp.org is a free library of plain-language legal guides and self-help forms, and it offers live chat with the possibility of free advice from a licensed staff attorney. Texas FreeLegalAnswers.org is a virtual advice clinic for civil matters. Both are good first stops before you call anyone, especially if your case might not need a lawyer at all.

For family cases, the Harris County Domestic Relations Office (dro.harriscountytx.gov) helps with child support, visitation and custody cases, and Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse (avda.org) and the Houston Area Women's Center (hawc.org) offer legal help and counseling to people fleeing abuse.

Where the paperwork goes locally

Most of what a self-represented person files in Baytown lands at one of a few local courts. Baytown Municipal Court at 3120 N Main Street handles city ordinance and traffic cases; the tickets, warrants and court records guide walks through it. The Harris County Justice of the Peace for Precinct 3, Place 2 sits at 701 W Baker Road, Suite 101, and is the local court for the eviction and small-claims filings that the self-help guides describe. Sterling Municipal Library on Mary Wilbanks Avenue has free Wi-Fi for filling out online intake forms if you don't have internet at home.

How to choose a lawyer

Anyone can claim to be a lawyer. Check before you pay a retainer: the State Bar of Texas runs a free public Find A Lawyer directory at texasbar.com that confirms whether someone is currently licensed in Texas and shows any public disciplinary history. The State Bar also runs a Client Attorney Assistance Program, a voluntary and confidential dispute resolution service, if a fee or communication problem comes up later. Do the license check before you sign anything, no matter how the lawyer was recommended to you.

Beyond the license check, ask how many cases like yours they've handled, who in the office will actually work your file, and get the fee arrangement, flat fee, hourly or contingency, in writing before you pay anything. If your case involves Spanish, ask directly whether the attorney or a staff member speaks Spanish, or whether the office uses an interpreter; the referral service and the legal aid intake teams can tell you this before they refer you.

Bring this to a first meeting

  • The citation, charging document, or lawsuit paperwork
  • Any letters from the court or the other side
  • A photo ID
  • A short written timeline of what happened, in order, with dates
  • Bond paperwork, if it's a criminal matter
  • The lease or contract, if it's a debt or housing matter

Free first consultations

Many private attorneys in the Baytown area offer a free initial consultation to size up a case. This is common and worth asking for up front, before you commit to a fee. It's not universal, so ask when you call.

Before you go

  • Do the State Bar license check before you pay a retainer or sign a fee agreement.
  • Note the date of your next court setting and any deadline on your paperwork, since that decides how fast you need help.
  • For a criminal case, tell the judge at your first appearance that you need appointed counsel and be ready to fill out a financial statement.
  • Try TexasLawHelp.org first if you are representing yourself in a civil matter.
  • Get every fee arrangement in writing.

Questions people ask

How do I get a free lawyer in Baytown? Apply to Lone Star Legal Aid or Houston Volunteer Lawyers if it's a civil matter and you meet the income limits; for a criminal case, ask the court about a public defender or appointed counsel at your first appearance.

How do I check if a lawyer is really licensed? Use the State Bar of Texas's free lawyer directory at texasbar.com.

Is the lawyer referral service free? The referral service connects you with private attorneys; ask what the first consultation costs, because the attorney's regular rates apply after that.

What if I can't afford a private lawyer for a criminal charge? Tell the judge at your first court appearance; you'll fill out a financial statement and the court decides on appointed counsel.

Is there help in Spanish? Ask when you contact them; the referral service offers Spanish-language resources.

Whatever the case is, don't sit on it hoping it resolves itself. An online application to a legal aid program costs you nothing but a little time, and it's usually the fastest way to find out whether you even need to pay for a lawyer at all.

No atiende casos penales.
