Crime in Baytown, by the numbers: down from the 2022 peak, still above nearby suburbs

Baytown police reported 344 violent crimes and 2,042 property crimes in 2025. Property crime was the lowest of the last five years, and violent crime the lowest since 2021. Property crime is down more than a third from its 2022 peak. But Baytown's rates are still higher than the Texas average and higher than in La Porte, Deer Park and League City, and violent crime in the first eight months of 2026 is running above the same months of 2025.

Where the numbers come from

The crime counts and rates here come from the FBI's Crime Data Explorer, which publishes what the Baytown Police Department reports through the national incident-based system. Other figures are labeled with their source. Baytown switched to that system on January 1, 2020, so the years below are counted the same way. The FBI uses its own population figure for each city, which we use for the rates so every city is measured alike.

These are crimes reported to police. Some crimes are never reported, and a single incident can include more than one offense.

Five years in Baytown

Violent crime, reported offenses:

  • 2021: 302.
  • 2022: 378.
  • 2023: 352.
  • 2024: 373.
  • 2025: 344.

Property crime, reported offenses:

  • 2021: 2,729.
  • 2022: 3,198.
  • 2023: 2,794.
  • 2024: 2,354.
  • 2025: 2,042.

What's inside those totals

Most violent crime in Baytown is aggravated assault: 237 of the 344 offenses in 2025. The rest were 63 rapes, 37 robberies and 7 murders or non-negligent manslaughters. Murders have ranged from 5 to 10 a year since 2021. Robbery fell the most, from 68 in 2022 to 37 in 2025.

Property crime is mostly theft. In 2025 there were 1,467 larcenies and thefts, 300 motor vehicle thefts and 275 burglaries. Vehicle theft fell from 520 in 2022 to 300 in 2025, and burglary from a high of 467 in 2023 to 275.

Violent crime has moved less than property crime: the 2025 count is about 9 percent below 2022 and still above 2021.

How Baytown compares

Rates per 100,000 residents in 2025, from the same FBI source:

  • Violent crime: Baytown 399, Texas 349, United States 329.
  • Property crime: Baytown 2,370, Texas 1,813, United States 1,552.

Nearby cities, violent and property crime per 100,000 in 2025:

  • Houston: about 897 violent and 3,884 property, from the Texas Department of Public Safety's 2025 report.
  • Pasadena: 436 violent and 1,778 property.
  • La Porte: 134 violent and 978 property.
  • Deer Park: 99 violent and 1,028 property.
  • League City: 60 violent and 1,072 property.

Baytown sits well below Houston on both measures and slightly below Pasadena on violent crime, though Pasadena's 2025 data has gaps. It is above La Porte, Deer Park and League City. Cities differ in size, shopping corridors and industry, so a rate comparison shows where Baytown stands, not why.

This year so far

The FBI's data for 2026 runs through August, and the most recent month may still be updated. From January through August, Baytown reported 248 violent crimes, up from 223 in the same months of 2025. Property crime fell to 1,162 from 1,362. The violent increase is 25 offenses, small enough that a few months can swing it either way.

What the police department says it is doing

The department's 2025 annual report lists 171 sworn officers of 177 authorized, 86 professional staff, 42,250 calls for service and 10,942 reports. Officers logged 20,549 hours of training, and the department answered 342 calls with a mental health component, 35 of them referred to Harris Health clinicians through a live video program called CORE. The report names violent crime and traffic safety as the 2026 priorities, along with more directed patrols in areas with a history of crime and continued work on staffing.

Traffic deaths

The state's crash records count 13 traffic deaths in Baytown in 2021, 20 in 2022, 13 in 2023 and 8 in 2024. A preliminary 2025 count stood at 10 in April 2026 and may still rise; the police department's own annual report says 11.

Read the fine print

  • Rates use the FBI's population for each city, which can differ from Census estimates.
  • Pasadena's 2025 data shows an unusually low June, so its totals may be undercounted.
  • Houston's figures come from the state's report, not the FBI tool, and its rates are our calculation from the state's totals.
  • The FBI's 2026 numbers are partial and can change as agencies update them.

Before you go

  • Lock vehicles and take valuables inside; theft is by far the largest share of property crime here.
  • Use the police non-emergency line for things that are not emergencies, and 911 for anything that is.
  • Check the FBI's Crime Data Explorer yourself; Baytown's agency code is TX1010100.

More Baytown by the numbers: Most Baytown-area flood claims came from outside the flood zone; Baytown's health, by the numbers: the starkest gap is insurance; Baytown's bars and restaurants reported $22 million in drink sales last year.
