Almost every Baytown home is online. Far fewer adults have a four-year degree.
In Baytown, 96.8 percent of households have a computer and 91.6 percent have a broadband internet subscription. Those numbers sit right next to the Texas and U.S. figures. This one does not: 14.8 percent of Baytown adults age 25 and older hold a bachelor's degree or higher, against 33.8 percent in Texas and 35.7 percent in the United States.

The plain reading: getting online is not the problem here. Getting past high school into a four-year degree is where Baytown trails, and many good local jobs do not ask for one. They ask for a certificate or a safety card, which is why the training page matters more than the degree row. Where to start is at the end of this page.
The short version
- Households with a computer: Baytown 96.8 percent, a little above Texas (96.3) and the U.S. (95.5).
- Households with a broadband subscription: Baytown 91.6 percent, against 91.4 in Texas and 91.0 in the U.S.
- Adults 25 and older with a bachelor's degree or higher: Baytown 14.8 percent, Texas 33.8, U.S. 35.7.
- Our training page lists the safety orientations and credentials that contractors on Baytown plant sites need.
Where these numbers come from
The Census Bureau runs a yearly survey called the American Community Survey. It asks households about computers and internet service, and it asks adults how far they went in school. The Bureau puts the results for cities, states and the country in one tool called QuickFacts. The numbers here are for 2020 to 2024.
Because they are survey results, they are estimates, not a head count of every home.
Computers and broadband: Baytown keeps pace
QuickFacts counts two things. One is households with a computer. The other is households with a broadband internet subscription.
- Households with a computer: Baytown 96.8 percent, Texas 96.3 percent, United States 95.5 percent.
- Households with a broadband subscription: Baytown 91.6 percent, Texas 91.4 percent, United States 91.0 percent.
Baytown is ahead of both by a small margin. The gap with Texas is 0.5 points on computers and 0.2 points on broadband. The gap with the country is 1.3 points and 0.6 points. Put another way, about 3 in every 100 Baytown households have no computer, and a bit more than 8 in every 100 have no broadband subscription.
Degrees: a wide gap
The same survey asks adults 25 and older about their schooling.
- High school graduate or higher: Baytown 78.6 percent, Texas 86.0 percent, United States 89.6 percent.
- Bachelor's degree or higher: Baytown 14.8 percent, Texas 33.8 percent, United States 35.7 percent.
The high school gap is 7.4 points against Texas and 11.0 points against the country. The bachelor's gap is much wider: 19.0 points against Texas and 20.9 points against the country. In Baytown, about 15 of every 100 adults have a four-year degree or more. In Texas, it is about 34 of every 100. The gap grows as the schooling gets longer, while home internet access stays level.
A bachelor's degree is not the only way to finish school after high school. Certificates, trade programs and two-year degrees do not count in the "bachelor's or higher" row, so the number does not measure all schooling after high school. It measures four-year degrees and beyond.
What this can look like on the ground
Our training page, Training that gets you through a Baytown plant gate, explains how work at the plants usually starts. It says most contractors on Baytown plant sites need a safety orientation called Safety Essentials, plus a site-specific orientation. It also covers other credentials, including TWIC cards and OSHA 10 and 30 cards.
Those are certificates and cards, not four-year degrees, and they count as schooling in real life even though the degree row cannot see them. A person can be well trained for a plant job and show up as "no bachelor's" in this table.
Read the fine print
- All figures are Census Bureau survey estimates for 2020 to 2024, not a count of every household.
- The bachelor's row does not count certificates, trade programs or two-year degrees. QuickFacts gives no Baytown figure for those.
