Boil water notice in Baytown: what it means and what to do
When water pressure in Baytown's system drops too low, usually after a water main break, state rules require the city to tell customers to boil their tap water before drinking it. Here is what a notice means, how you will hear about one, and what to do during it and after it ends.

Why a notice happens
Water lines are kept under pressure so that nothing outside the pipe can get in. When a main breaks or a plant goes down and the pressure falls, outside water and bacteria can enter the lines. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, the state agency that oversees drinking water, lists pressure below 20 pounds per square inch as one of the conditions that can require a boil water notice. The water system has to send the notice on the state's own template and report it to the agency within 24 hours.
The notice stays in place until the system fixes the problem, restores pressure and sends the state lab results showing the water is safe. Then it issues a second notice, in the same way, that lifts the first.
How Baytown has used it
Of the three Baytown notices listed here, two covered a part of town, not the whole city:
- January 2021: a water main break led to a notice along the Interstate 10 corridor from Spur 330 to Garth Road.
- February 2021: during the winter storm, the Baytown Area Water Authority's treatment plant went offline. The city put its whole system under a boil order on February 15 and lifted it on February 21, after pressure had stayed above 25 pounds per square inch for a day and lab results came back clean.
- February 2025: a main break on Bayway Drive dropped the pressure. The notice covered Bayway Drive from Spur 330 to Bayvilla Drive and Baker Road from Bayway to Bush Road, including the Lakewood, Wooster and Craigmont areas. It was issued on Wednesday afternoon, February 12, and lifted that Friday.
How you will hear about it
The city posts notices on its website and social media, including Nextdoor, and through local news outlets. The fastest way to get one is Baytown Alert, the city's free notification service; its public works alerts cover utility and water outages. The city's notice also asks you to share it with neighbors who may not have seen it, especially people in apartments, nursing homes and schools.
Not everyone in the Baytown area gets water from the city. If your water comes from a utility district or a private water company, that system issues its own notices. Your water bill shows who your provider is.
What to do during a notice
The city's notice follows the state template:
- Boil water at a vigorous rolling boil for two minutes, then let it cool, before using it to drink, cook, make ice, brush teeth or wash your face. Bottled water works too.
- Use boiled or bottled water for baby formula and for pets.
- Do not use ice or water from the refrigerator door.
- You can shower or bathe, but do not swallow the water. Watch young children in the bath for the same reason.
- A dishwasher is generally fine if its final rinse reaches at least 150 degrees.
- Children, older adults and anyone with a weakened immune system are the most at risk from bacteria in the water.
What to do when it is lifted
When the city says the water no longer needs boiling, flush your home's lines:
- Run every cold water faucet on full for at least five minutes.
- Throw out the ice in your ice maker, then make and discard three batches.
- Replace disposable water filters, including the one in the refrigerator.
- Run enough water to replace everything in your lines and tanks at least once, including the water heater, and run a water softener through a regeneration cycle.
Read the fine print
- Boiling times vary by source. Baytown's notices, which use the state template, say two minutes; some national guidance says one minute at Baytown's elevation. Two minutes is the safer choice.
- The flushing steps follow common Texas guidance based on the same state rules. Your provider's own notice is the final word.
- The list of past notices is not complete; it covers only the notices confirmed from the city and local news.
Before you go
- Sign up for Baytown Alert before you need it.
- Keep a few gallons of bottled water at home, especially in hurricane and freeze season.
- If you lose water pressure, check the city's site before you call; the city usually posts the area and the cause.
- Our power outage page covers the other half of a storm.
