Barbers Hill Independent School District, whose district office is in Mont Belvieu, adopted its 2026-27 budget on June 22, 2026. The district's budget summary shows planned spending of $151.9 million against expected revenue of $146.8 million. That is a planned deficit of about $5.1 million, a swing from a planned surplus of about $4.6 million the year before. Mont Belvieu is the next town up Highway 146 from Baytown, so this is the school budget for the plant-and-tank-farm country just north of the city.

The short version

  • The adopted 2026-27 budget lists $146,813,126 in revenue and $151,884,815 in spending, a deficit of $5,071,689.
  • The per-pupil allotment rises from $14,390 to $14,893, and total budgeted payroll rises from $102,208,682 to $106,271,666.
  • The summary does not give a fund balance, a tax rate or a reason for the deficit.

The numbers

Barbers Hill ISD posts its budget on its finance page, where the 2026-27 General Operating Budget is listed under Budget Information. The summary lists five school years side by side. Here is how the last two compare.

For 2026-27, adopted on June 22, 2026: - Revenue: $146,813,126. - Budgeted spending: $151,884,815. - Result: a deficit of $5,071,689.

For 2025-26: - Revenue: $146,507,363. - Budgeted spending: $141,900,312. - Result: a surplus of $4,607,051.

The budget goes from a planned surplus of about $4.6 million to a planned deficit of about $5.1 million. Revenue goes up by $305,763, or about 0.2 percent. Spending goes up by $9,984,503, or about 7 percent. That gap is the story: income is nearly flat while costs climb.

The same summary shows growth on the other side of the page. Enrollment is 8,184 students in 2026-27, compared with 8,124 in 2025-26. That is 60 more students, about 0.7 percent. The per-pupil allotment is $14,893 for 2026-27, up from $14,390 the year before. That is $503 more, an increase of about 3.5 percent. The summary lists the allotment without defining the term.

Total budgeted payroll is $106,271,666 for 2026-27, up from $102,208,682 the year before. That is $4,062,984 more, or about 4 percent. Payroll is about 70 percent of total budgeted spending in 2026-27. The summary does not give a head count.

What the summary does not say

The summary is a set of figures. It does not say how the district will cover the gap, and it does not give a fund balance, a tax rate or the reason the budget was set this way. A district can cover a planned gap from savings, called a fund balance, but this summary does not say that is the plan here. Budgets are plans, and the final numbers can come in different from the plan, so 2026-27 could end with a deficit, a break-even year or a surplus.

If you live or work up there

All of these figures are budgeted amounts, not final results. The percent changes and the 70 percent share are our own math from the district's numbers. The summary is short, and you can read it yourself on the district's finance page. A longer budget book, if the district posts one, may answer more questions. If you want to know how the gap will be covered, ask the district's finance office or ask at a school board meeting.
