Worth the drive
Baytown's neighboring towns are close enough to use like extra neighborhoods, but each solves a different kind of day. Mont Belvieu is the fullest outing. Highlands, Crosby, Beach City, Cove and Anahuac reward more specific reasons to go. Baytown isn't an island.

Baytown isn't an island. Mont Belvieu, Highlands, Crosby, Beach City, Cove and Anahuac are all close enough to be part of the same Tuesday, and worth knowing even if you never move. Here is what each is good for on a day out, with the address and the hours where they are published.
Mont Belvieu
Mont Belvieu is the fractionation and storage hub up 146. It is a separate city in Chambers County with its own tax base, its own council, its own police and its own school district, Barbers Hill ISD. It sits ten or fifteen minutes from Baytown's older streets. Beach City and Cove share the same school district. It is the best of the neighbors for a whole afternoon, because it has the most to do with a child, a beer or a plate.
- The Chambers County Children's Museum, 10955 Eagle Drive, is about 27,000 square feet of role-play spaces (a bank, a grocery store, a dental office). It includes an Oil and Natural Gas Park that explains the industry to kids, and an outdoor play yard called Recess! with a sand pit and a water wall. It is built for ages 0 to 12 and costs $9 for anyone age 1 and up. It is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 to 5 and Sunday from 12 to 5, closed Monday except for private events. - City Park, 10900 Eagle Drive, has ball and soccer fields, a walking trail and a bike trail. It also has fishing, a skate park, an amphitheater, a pavilion and a playground, and a splash pad that runs from 10 to 8 daily, March 1 to October 31. It is the free half of the day. - Craft 96 Draught House + Kitchen, 9209 Eagle Drive, is the reason to come for dinner. A casual, family-friendly restaurant with 63 craft-beer taps and more than 45 bottles of wine. It is open 11 to 9 Monday to Saturday and 11 to 8 on Sunday, and it is the nearest big beer list to Baytown. - Lee's CK Seafood, 9675 Eagle Drive, is the seafood counter, open 11 to 9 every day but Wednesday. - Cadillac Jack's Breakfast Tacos & Coffee Bar, 9118 Highway 146, is the early stop for breakfast tacos and coffee. It is open from 4 to 9 a.m. Monday to Friday and 4 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, and closed Sunday.
Highlands
Highlands sits northwest along the San Jacinto River, older and quieter, and unincorporated Harris County rather than a city. Main Street is the reason to go, and the two stops are on South Main.
- Backdraft Restaurant, 411 S Main, is a family-owned place serving Texas-style slow-smoked barbecue and plates made from scratch. It opens at 5 a.m. Monday to Saturday. It closes at 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 8:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and on Sunday it is open from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. - Devillier's Boudin, 715 S Main, is the boudin stop, open 9 to 7 Monday to Saturday and 10 to 7 on Sunday. Buy some to eat in the car.
Crosby
Crosby is the north end: unincorporated and northeast of Baytown along the San Jacinto River and US 90. It has its own school district, Crosby ISD, and a lot more shops and restaurants than the smaller towns. Its identity is the Crosby Fair and Rodeo, at 14920 Crosby Lynchburg Road, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit established in 1946 to support area youth through education and agriculture. The fair's own site says the 2026 event has wrapped and does not post dates for the next one, so check crosbyrodeo.com before you plan around it. For a meal on FM 2100, Busta's Burgers and More is at 6115 FM 2100, Suite 101, and the Crawfish Shack is at 5822 FM 2100, with hours the directory lists as Wednesday to Sunday, so confirm before you drive over. Charlie's Smokehouse & Grill, at 13011 N Crosby Lynchburg Road, is the barbecue stop on Crosby Lynchburg Road.
Beach City and Cove
Beach City is a small bay town on FM 2354, which follows the shoreline of Trinity Bay, and it incorporated in 1966 to stay Beach City rather than be annexed by Baytown. The one destination on that road is Yepez Vineyard, 12739 FM 2354, open Friday and Saturday from 12 to 6 and Sunday from 2 to 7; the tasting room closes Monday through Thursday except for events, so confirm before you drive. The rest is bay houses on piers.
Cove and Old River-Winfree are two small Chambers County cities on either side of I-10 where it crosses Old River. The stop is Cove Country Store, 6013 S FM 565, the local version of a convenience store, open 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. most days, until 11 on Friday and Saturday, and from 6 a.m. on Sunday. Neither town has much of a commercial center, so it is a stop for gas and a drink, not a day.
Anahuac
Anahuac is the outlier: the Chambers County seat, farther east on I-10 and then down 61 or 563. Past it is the Jocelyn Nungaray National Wildlife Refuge, which was called the Anahuac refuge until it was renamed. Admission is free and the refuge keeps daylight hours. The Shoveler Pond loop is 2.64 miles, alligators are out year-round, and the best times to see them are early in the morning and around sunset. The refuge is the reason to go.
How far is everything, exactly has the drive times.
Before you go
- Confirm hours online before you drive to Highlands, Crosby or Cove, since the hours here come from directories rather than each business's own page. - The Children's Museum is closed on Mondays, and Cadillac Jack's is closed on Sundays and shuts its doors by 9 or 10 in the morning. - The Crosby Fair and Rodeo does not post dates for next year yet, so do not plan a trip around it until its own site does. - The Nungaray refuge has alligators year-round, so keep your distance and bring water, a hat and bug spray. - Yepez Vineyard is open Friday to Sunday only, and its hours are shorter than a bar's, so leave enough time before it closes.
