Adobe walls, Texas grapes, and a patio twenty minutes from the refineries.
Guide
Wine near Baytown means one immediate vineyard, one stronger winery day trip and a couple of closer places for a good glass. Choose by the outing you want. The Gulf Coast is not Hill Country, which is three hours away, and that contrast is part of the day.

Yepez Vineyard, 12739 FM 2354. The one winery in the immediate area: an adobe-style tasting room, picnic tables, a playground, a covered pavilion, and a patio that catches the evening light. The tasting room is open all year, Friday and Saturday from noon to 6 and Sunday from 2 to 7. It is closed Monday through Thursday except for specials and private events, so a Saturday can lose to a wedding. Tastings are three complimentary pours with a purchase. The winery's site says the wines are made from Texas-grown grapes. A 2012 profile counted a little over 400 blanc du bois and black Spanish vines on an acre planted in 2005, with the rest of the fruit bought in from other Texas growers, so expect the list to include grapes that were never going to grow on the Gulf Coast. Ask about the tasting flight, then take a glass to the patio.
Yepez lets you bring a picnic and your own glasses but not your own alcohol, welcomes children with a parent close by, and allows leashed pets outdoors. It takes cash and the major cards. The site lists a book club on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. and a grape stomp in the fall, and the winery's listing mentions summer Thursday concerts and music on the patio on some Sundays, so check the calendar before you count on a band. Sunday afternoon is the hour; the Sunday guide puts it after the ferry and before dinner. Hours and the events calendar are on its page.
- Haak Vineyards and Winery, 6310 Avenue T, Santa Fe (Galveston County), about an hour. The Gulf Coast's established winery was founded in 2000. It has blanc du bois, a wine it advertises as the only Texas Madeira, vineyards on the property, a tasting room and tours. Its site posts hours separately for each location, and a third-party directory lists the Santa Fe tasting room as Thursday through Sunday. Confirm hours and reserve when the day calls for it. This is the day trip.
- Bryan-College Station and Brenham. The weekend, not the afternoon. Haak also has a Brenham location.
- The Bridge and Barrel Wine Bar and Bistro, 5621 South Main Street in Crosby. It is a restaurant and bottle shop in what was once Crosby's first meat market. It has a patio, brunch and dinner from scratch, and a shelf of wines, meads, ciders and craft beers from small producers. It is open Wednesday through Saturday and for Sunday brunch until 3, and it takes reservations online. It is a restaurant, not a tasting room. - Craft 96 Draught House + Kitchen, 9209 Eagle Drive in Mont Belvieu. A family-friendly restaurant and bar with 63 beer taps and more than 45 bottles of wine, open daily until 9 (8 on Sunday). The pick for a table where one person wants a glass of red and another wants a flight of beer.
Blanc du bois, black Spanish (Lenoir), and the newer hybrids bred for humidity and for Pierce's disease, which kills the European vines this close to the coast. Expect crisp whites, a port-style red, and growers who will tell you exactly why the cabernet you asked for isn't on the list. Yepez and Haak are the local proof that the argument can be partly won: real vines on the ground, and Texas fruit from farther afield filling in the rest.
The site's drinks guide covers the daiquiri, the bars and the Sunday rules. The beaches page covers the drive to the coast.
If you want the shortest drive and a local afternoon, start with Yepez. If you want rows of vines and the feeling of having left town, choose Haak and plan the hour each way. If the real goal is dinner and a glass rather than a tasting room, stay closer, in Crosby or Mont Belvieu. The landscape is flatter, wetter and closer to industrial Houston. You can leave a plant corridor after lunch, sit by vines before four, and still be home for the evening. For a family or a couple with one free Saturday, that short distance is the point.
Yepez keeps short hours, Friday through Sunday, so check the site the morning of and expect private events to close some Saturdays. Pack your own picnic and glasses, and leave the bottle at home, since outside alcohol isn't allowed. Haak is roughly an hour away, so go with enough time for the drive and confirm hours and reservations before you go. If you are driving after a tasting, decide who is driving before the first pour.

Go to Yepez on a Sunday at four, sit on the patio, and order the white. Twenty minutes from the refinery, and the vines don't seem to mind.
