A Baytown patio is mostly a question of time and view. In summer, the same table can be miserable at four and excellent after sunset, so choose the hour before you choose the restaurant.

- Check the sun direction before committing to an outdoor table. - In summer, move the plan toward morning or evening. - Use the Hyatt side when the ship channel view is the point. - Use O'Neals when you want the marina to feel casual. - Treat Yepez as its own outing. - If the weather turns, have an indoor backup nearby. - Bring your own chair only when the stop is actually a park. - The best patio is the one that matches the day's heat and wind.

Anchor & Hearth Woodfired Kitchen, 100 Convention Center Way

The Hyatt's kitchen has a patio on the marina where the tankers slide by, and at dusk the plants across the water come on like a city that isn't there in daytime. Prime hour: the forty minutes either side of sunset. Dinner is Tuesday to Saturday, 5 to 9, with breakfast and lunch on weekdays and brunch on weekends. For a drink without a meal, the hotel's Bayland Lounge is open 4 to 10 every day. Self-parking at the hotel is free.

O’Neals on the Water, 2651 Business 146

The waterfront patio in town, next to Bayland Marina: fried shrimp, hushpuppies, something cold, and on Sunday afternoons a band on the patio. It is closed Monday, opens at 4 Tuesday to Thursday, and runs 11 to 10 on Friday and Saturday and 11 to 9 on Sunday. The lot fills on live-music nights and the overflow lines the feeder road. The kitchen closes earlier than the bar, so don't count on a late plate.

Yepez Vineyard, 12739 FM 2354

Adobe tasting room, picnic tables and a patio between the vines, Texas wine by the flight or the glass, patio music on Sundays and Thursday concerts in summer. The tasting room is open Friday and Saturday from noon to 6 and Sunday from 2 to 7, and closed Monday to Thursday except for special events. Picnics are welcome on the property, outside alcohol is not, and children are welcome with a parent watching. It is the Sunday-afternoon patio, and the one you bring out-of-town people to so they stop saying "Baytown?" like that.

Black Bayou, 1930 Garth Road

Viet-Cajun, a bar, and outdoor seating in a Garth Road strip lot. Garlic crawfish in season, a shrimp po-boy the rest of the year, beignets after. It is open from 11 on weekdays and noon on weekends, closing at 9 or 10. See the crawfish guide for the season.

The Dirty Daiquiri, 2007 North Main

Drive-thru daiquiris, and a patio if you'd rather stay. Closed Monday, 3 to 10 Tuesday to Thursday, noon to 11 on Friday and Saturday, noon to 10 on Sunday. It's a drink, not a dinner.

Heart and Whisk Bakery, 4618 North Main

A patio, espresso and cinnamon rolls, which makes it the morning patio for the months when the afternoon one is out of the question. It is open Wednesday to Sunday only, from 7 on Wednesday to Friday and from 8 on the weekend, with an easy lot out front.

Shawarma In Town, 407 West Baker Road, Unit V

A counter spot with outdoor seating and halal meat. Chicken shawarma, eaten outside on a cool evening. They wind down by 9 on weekdays and 8 on Sunday.

Bayland Park and Bayland Marina

Less a patio than a shoreline, and the free one. Bayland Park, 2641 South SH 146 Business, is open 5 in the morning to 10 at night with a lighted fishing pier, a hilltop gazebo and restrooms. The sunset comes straight down the bay at you and the boats are coming in. Bring your own chair. The marina next door at 2651 South Highway 146 has the slips, the store, with the office open Tuesday to Sunday, 8 to 5.

The Bridge and Barrel Wine Bar and Bistro, 5621 South Main, Crosby

The road-trip patio, in a historic building, with an outdoor patio, a bottle shop and elevated brunch. Open Wednesday to Friday from noon, Saturday from 11 and Sunday from 11 to 3. Closed Monday and Tuesday. More on the town in the Crosby guide.

Thompson’s Fish Camp on Simms Road is a bait camp and boat ramp at the end of Tri-City Beach, not a restaurant, so it is not on this list.

The rules

- Mosquitoes from April to October; the good patios have fans, the great ones have a breeze off the water. - Summer patio hours are 7 to 10 in the morning and after 7 at night; don't fight it. - October is the month all of these are perfect at once. March is the second. - A norther in January makes the Anchor & Hearth patio quite a seat for about two hours. Wear the jacket.

October, any evening, forty minutes before sunset, a table on the Anchor & Hearth patio. If the tables are taken, Bayland Park with your own chair is the same sky for free, and the sunset guide has the rest of the places to stand. Either way, stay until the lights across the water have all come on. That's the show.

Before you go

- O’Neals is closed on Monday and does not open until 4 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, so a weekday patio there means dinner, not lunch. - Yepez Vineyard is open only Friday to Sunday, so check the hours before you drive out FM 2354. - Anchor & Hearth takes dinner reservations on Tock, and the hotel's self-parking is free. - Bayland Park is free, closes at 10 at night, allows no glass and wants dogs on a leash. - Monday is the hard day: O’Neals, The Dirty Daiquiri and Heart and Whisk are all closed, so plan a Monday patio around Black Bayou, the Hyatt's Bayland Lounge (open 4 to 10 daily) or Bayland Park.

La cocina del Hyatt tiene un patio sobre la marina por donde pasan los buques tanque, y al anochecer las plantas del otro lado del agua se encienden como una ciudad que de día no existe. The Bridge and Barrel Wine Bar and Bistro, 5621 South Main, Crosby
