Baytown by Mood: Where to Go for Nature, Water, Kids, Art and a Quiet Hour
Baytown is too spread out for a single attraction list to be useful; matching the stop to the mood makes the city easier to use.
Baytown's best outings are spread across water, wetlands, neighborhood parks, art and old commercial streets. Most of the nature and downtown stops below are free. The paid ones are Pirates Bay Waterpark, the bowling and indoor play places, and the Monument side of San Jacinto. The useful question is not how many attractions exist, but which kind of day you want.
Baytown has a lot of free outdoor space: a nature center of roughly 450 acres on the bay, a wetlands center with a trail out the back door, a waterfront park with a pier, a splash pad, three Little League complexes, dozens of neighborhood parks, and an old downtown with a theater, an art alley and a sculpture trail. Below, places are sorted by what you want to do: addresses, and what each place is.

Free and outdoors
The Baytown Nature Center on Bayway Drive is the big one: a peninsula between Crystal Bay, Scott Bay and Burnet Bay, built on the old Brownwood subdivision after the ground sank and the hurricanes finished it (the Brownwood story is its own essay on this site). Trails, fishing piers, a butterfly garden, bird blinds, and a sunset view over the ship channel. The Eddie V. Gray Wetlands Center at 1724 Market Street is the small indoor nature center, aquariums and live animals, with the Goose Creek Trail starting out back and running along the creek toward Goose Creek Park at 3 Price Street and the Decker Natural Area. Bayland Park on 146 Business has the fishing pier, the marina next door and open lawn on the bay; David G. Burnet Park on Burnet Drive is the quieter waterfront picnic spot. Downtown, the Baytown Sculpture Trail runs along Texas Avenue from Town Square at 213 W. Texas, and the Art Alley murals are at 124 W. Texas; the Art League gallery at 110 W. Texas is free to walk into.
